A Rivendell frame with a threadless front end would definitely have my

with threaded front ends.

You say this as if several of the current models COULDNT be female. Do you know
for sure they aren't?

Sam Hillborne? Samantha.
A. Homer Hilsen? Allison.
Joe Appaloosa? Joesefine.
Clem? Clementine.

I never thought of them as being boy names or girl names (except for the
Hilsen). I like the ambiguity. Why do you think there needs to be a girl name?

[RBW] Re: 26er vs 29er

2018-06-11 Thread adam leibow
for bikepacking/offroad touring, 29er is what i'd choose. i have a 29er
hunqapillar (54cm) and it rides really nice. it's as much of a mountain
bike as touring bike, which means it's just really useful. i also have a
crust evasion 26"+ which fills the same niche, but in a very different way.
i like both styles of bike and wouldn't say one's better than the other.
this all being said, i probably wouldn't use a 26" mountain bike for
serious offroad touring unless it were a plus tire mounted to a wide rim
(like the evasion), or if i were very short.

Really handsome bike, Brian - congrats! I have the continental contact
speed tires on my SimpleOne (42s I think) and really like them.

I recently mounted a rear rack on my older Atlantis and am using Banjo
Brothers' "Market Panniers" for mid-week grocery hauling. Such a stable
bike, handled the ~25LB load kike it was nothing, though admittedly that's
only about 1/2 the max I should be able to haul back there.

I'm sure you'll have fun figuring out everything that bike can do!

Re: [RBW] New Atlantis! - First Riv

2018-06-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
Brynnar asked what the strap is for.

It's a "john's irish strap" around the front rack and the bars, supporting
the rack as a safety measure.

Rivendell recommends a bit of redundancy on the very remote chance that the
center strut of your three-point-attached front rack fails. If the center
strut fails, you are virtually guaranteed to over the bars. It's an
extraordinarily rare and unlikely thing, but it has happened before, and so
Rivendell likes to be cautious. If the center strut fails, the rack will
wobble about some, and the strap will catch it, and you'll have an
opportunity to fix the situation without going over the bars. Better safe
than sorry.

[RBW] Bikepacking the Smokey Mountains of the Colorado Rockies

2018-06-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, all!

John, there’s a lot on the water in the mouth trick I didn’t mention. First: A
lot of it is based on Noakes’ approach to water from “Waterlogged” — the idea
being that we don’t need the amounts of water we think we do DURING exertion,
and often over drink. The body can perform just fine and without danger so long
as you recalibrate thirst to match actual need rather than “I’m slightly
thirsty, must guzzle!”. Second, the body that doesn’t need to process carbs
doesn’t need near as much water. Third, nose breathing is obviously a
requirement, is healthier for many reasons, reduces moisture loss and feel, and
helps naturally stay aerobic for steady, long effort.

peec ... some’at or other: You do’na ken the half of it! She married me,
already knowing me. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Ok never mind, I can see that you're here now.

If you don't want an organized tour, the hike and bike trail is a good
east-west route.

If you want a north-south route I'd try the City of Austin Bike Route 31.
(downtown only)
https://austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Transportation/2017_Austin_Bike_Map_-_Side_2.pdf
(city wide)
https://austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Transportation/2017_Austin_Bike_Map_-_Side_1.pdf
(interactive/ArcGIS)
https://austin.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=c7fecf32a2d946fabdf062285d58d40c=3052120.7123%2C10036958.1486%2C3179054.0456%2C10097891.4819%2C102739

hope this is helpful!

aren't much fun to ride if you ask me.

I agree, the best short ride near downtown is the granite and boardwalk
trails on Ladybird Lake. Mostly stay on the south side of the lake, the
path has several breaks in it on the north side. It gets less crowded as
you ride east toward Roy G Guerrero Park.

There are several other places to rent nicer bikes than b-cycle, e.g.

2018-06-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Hey, Dennis! Getting your signiture in is easy. Type it at the bottom when you
post. Grin. We used to have an (stated, unstated?) rule that people sign their
names to each post. Interestingly, it helped the group culture maintain a
different feel from other groups. We still feel different as we’ve gotten away
from everyone signing their name, but to a lesser degree. So I arrogantly try
to push back every other now and then. Grin.

Again, beautiful bike, and may it never again look so pristine! Grin.

With abandon.

the crushed granite trails around Lady Bird Lake, through Barton Springs

is very important in the summer

Two side trips that should be on your list are Hut's Hamburgers - their
hamburgers are fun, their onion rings a food group, and their $3.50
milkshake is the $5 milkshake from Pump Fiction. Other side trip is
Sweetish Hill Bakery, where their delightful pastry matches their name -
merely sweetish

Re: [RBW] Re: Clicking noise -- About to lose my mind.

2018-06-11 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Nathan,
Glad you isolated the problem... one note on the grip kings: I found I needed
to retighten the bolts that hold the rounded, outer textured portions to the
central H part of the body body. I had one come loose and drop right out after
only a couple short rides after first receiving them. Luckily it happened
right at the start of a ride as the front of the pedal shifted/rotated under
weight while mounting it with only the one side still bolted. A quick stop and
inspection revealed the bolt was missing and fortunately there it was on the
pavement just a few yards back where the ride began. I reinstalled with a
multi tool and tightened the other 3 bolts which all needed some snugging and
continued my ride. I later checked a second pair which also seemed to need
tightening and experienced some of those bolt/thread tightening clicks in the
process so I eventually removed all the bolts, regreased, and reinstalled on
both pairs of pedals.

Might be worth checking on yours.
