[RBW] Re: Would you pay more for handlebars if they were safety-certified?

2018-06-29 Thread Evan E.
Benz asked: "So, is there any need for certification then?"

Good question. I, for one, think that certification is useful -- IF that
certification is a well-known industry standard, such as EN (which is the
only one I've ever heard of). I guess my main point is simply this: Most
retailers don't make clear if any given handlebar meets any given standard.
So all consumers can do is guess and hope. Yes, guessing and hoping seems
to works fine most of the time, since bars seldom break. But if even Nitto
makes bars of different strengths for different markets, I think that a
certification, such as a sticker on the handlebar or at least a note in the
product description, could help to explain the price of the handlebars --
and help Nitto and its retailers to justify those prices.

I will definitely pay more for parts that meet a standard that is well defined

fine.

[RBW] Re: Would you pay more for handlebars if they were safety-certified?

2018-06-29 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Heat-treated handlebars are not necessarily stronger or more durable than
non-heat-treated handlebars. You need to further know the alloy used, and
the part's dimensions to derive these. For example, a thin-walled,
heat-treated handlebar will likely be weaker and less durable than a stout
chrome-plated steel handlebar (albeit weighs much less).

Nevertheless, from Grant's writings, I don't believe Nitto will produce a
sub-par product, regardless of intended market or customer. From what I
understand, Nitto prototypes have to pass Nitto's own internal standards
that are at least as stringent as any applicable industry standard. Based
partly on Grant's recommendation and my own experience, Nitto is a brand
name I trust (with my life, literally, especially when bombing down trails).

So the question remains, would I pay more for handlebars and stems of
tested superior strength and durability? I already do since most of my
handlebars and stems are Nitto or equivalents such as Thomson (my
assumption here on equivalence). Why? Because a few extra dollars is worth
peace of mind in these critical components, even if one has a good health
and dental plan.

Maybe the question should be, why aren't people asking for such
certifications? For one, bicycles are still toys to the majority, and it's
the minority that asks for a toy's certification on health and safety.
Furthermore, except for stupid-light stuff, there doesn't seem to be an
epidemic of broken handlebars and stems; empirical evidence shows that
handlebars and stems are generally strong and durable enough. For the
outliers (that's us, ladies and gentlemen), most enthusiasts are aware of
which brands are less prone to failure (and other parameters), so we sort
ourselves out accordingly. Weight-weenies, for example, wouldn't be too
pissed that their $$$ user-light part broke after 3 uses, whereas I don't
really expect to replace my Nitto stems for decades (I rotate through my
bikes). So, is there any need for certification then?

I INSIST on every handlebar I buy to be tested to failure using
well-established test standards on frequently calibrated and re-certified
equipment. With those test results, I can then estimate how long I might
have been able to use them on a bicycle, had I not paid the money to have
them rigorously broken. I can fret and overthink from the comfort of my

Piggyback!

Joe listed and sold a pair of hoopless Hub Area Racks for $170 shipped.

Turns out I also have a hoopless hub-area rack and the matching bags that I
could part with. Here's a photo of the setup on my singlespeed. They've
been on a bike a couple times, and have carried things maybe 4 times, but
have never been on an overnighter. They are essentially as-new.

I'd like $250 shipped for the rack and the bags as a kit. I want to keep
them together. If you sincerely want one without the other, PM me and if I
can manage to find a matching pair of buyers so both get sold, then I'll
make it happen.

[RBW] Re: Selle Anatomica X series saddles

2018-06-29 Thread Ron Mc
The mistake you're going to see here was made at the factory - that's the
bonding resin bleeding through - being squeezed through as the saddle
stretched

The mistake people make with Brooks is picking the wrong saddle for their
riding position.

My two upright bikes have B17s, my two drop-bar bikes have Swallow - I've
found Swallow to be the most invisible saddle I've ever ridden, including
SA.

I've never used anything but Obenaufs, and I use it sparingly - like
once/year to prep saddles for summer sweat.

I've been through all of them, and came back to Brooks.

For anybody who can't live with Brooks, I'll put in a vote here for Fabric
Scoop Radius. My daughter has tried B17 Imperial S, Specialized (on
recommendation), Rivet (on trial rental) and adores this saddle.

and don't think it relates to tough - she's a nationally ranked wrestler

[RBW] Would you pay more for handlebars if they were safety-certified?

2018-06-29 Thread Evan E.
Short Version:

Would you pay more for handlebars (and stems) if the seller made clear that
those bars and stems meet established safety standards, such as EN
standards?

Long Version:

In a recent thread called "Dear Riv, Please Make a Wider Noodle," Grant
told a story about how Nitto was sued for a few handlebars that were broken
by some burly riders who leaned hard on them, even though the bars were
city bars not meant for rough riding. So that got me thinking:

Because Nitto tests its bars and stems, might they -- and their
distributors and dealers -- publish the strength standards that their bars
and stems meet?

If I were shopping for bars, I'd be willing to pay more for them if I knew they
met an industry standard for strength and safety. Most sellers don't say a
peep about safety certifications -- and don't even describe the conditions
under which the bars should be used. (Compass is an exception. They say
that all their Nitto bars "meet the most stringent EN 'Racing Bike'
standard for fatigue resistance.")

True story: A few years ago I spied, online, Nitto RM-013 bars, size 52,
that were not heat-treated. I was confused because Nitto Noodle bars of
similar width WERE heat-treated. Perhaps those non-heat-treated bars were
some of the inexpensive Nitto bars that Grant mentioned -- bars not
intended for large people riding on gravel and trails. But somehow those
unheated Nitto bars made it to the U.S. market. Yes, they cost about half
of what Noodles cost and what heat-treated RM-013s cost. And yes, I was
tempted to buy them. I figured, "They're Nitto, so they're safe, right?"

For the record: I doubt I could break any bars just by riding along. I
weigh 145 pounds. Please just humor me here and help me overthink. Thanks.

I'd never heard that; I'll have to be careful from now on, since rayon too
uses harmful chemicals -- tho' all my rayon shirts are from Goodwill, so I
suppose they're all environmental sunk cost, so to speak.

But apparently a Swiss company, Litrax, uses mechanical and natural enzymes
to break down the fibers and, moreover, their method produces a
particularly strong and soft material. And a quick Google (vi) brings up at
least 1 mfr of cycling clothing that uses Litrax fabric.

I'd love cotton jerseys; probably no good for the East Coast, but perfect
for the high desert, where it felt a bit muggy on my ride just now at 13%
(tho' in a plastic jersey). In fact, I had one, bought second hand on the
boblist, but that's the only one I've ever seen. I dislike T shirts,
because I find the crew neck uncomfortable -- prefer a zip plaquet -- and I
also like pockets.

I've been riding two SA (non-X) saddles on my commuter and road bikes for
years. It's the Lay-Z-Boy of leather saddles. I keep trying to transition
to a modern road saddle but keep going back to the SAs like an old pair of
comfy jeans. They are not super durable - the one on my commuter is nearing
the end of the tension bolt, so I should see about getting a longer one (I
believe SA can provide these). The newer gen ones are said to be a little
better constructed.

I never got on well with the Brooks saddles I tried. While the shape of the
B17 was nice, they were too hard and led to crotch numbing, even on short
rides.

[RBW] Re: Selle Anatomica X series saddles

2018-06-29 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have the regular steel (now chromo) carriage Selle Anatomicas on all
three of my bikes. One is four years old (the one on my 'car') and still
going strong. I can't find a more comfortable saddle than these. They just
work for my anatomy. Now, that being said, I have bent rails. Their
'seconds' saddles have had some leather stretch issues, where one side
stretches more than the other. It seems the leather had half the saddle
from a softer section of the hide, so I recommend against the 'seconds'.
The edges of the leather are not rounded off, so I chamfered off the edge
for more thigh comfort. I am not happy with customer service, as I felt
the first saddles with the long rails made from Hi-ten were a complete fail
as a product. I weigh 145 and I bent the rails riding mostly on the street
with a suspension seat post! I have had three back surgeries, so I ride
light too. Ridiculous that it should bend under me. The company would not
replace the saddle. After my anger and venting to the owner, I went ahead
and bought three saddles anyway, ensuring they were using the 'new'
chromoly rails. Selle Anatomica's are way more comfortable than a Brooks,
at least on my butt. So far, I haven't bent any more rails. I might try a
Rivet someday, but I have settled on these being my saddle of choice. Now,
if I could find some handlebars that won't antagonize my peripheral
neuropathy, I will be happy.

+1 on the new RUSA light weight jersey. My first ride in it was a hot, humid
200km day. The friend who came with me at one point commented on how she
smelled. Needless to say, she was wearing Lycra. I was very pleased with the

I also am a big fan of light colored long sleeve seersucker shirts for sunny,
