[RBW] The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-09 Thread Justin, Oakland
First: ride what you have the way you can and want to ride. Figure out what
works and what doesn’t. Many people prefer lighter bikes for gravel and
bikepacking, some prefer 3” wide tires without suspension, some like 2.4” full
suspension bikes. You won’t know until you try.

>From there iron out what you might change:
- do you want racks or strap on bags?
- are you needing a lower top tube for dismounting?
- does it waggle or feel too stiff?
- does it feel like you need skinnier or fatter tires?
- how about that top tube? Does it let you run the bars you want in the
position you want?
- are my tires supple enough? SHOULD I HAVE GUMWALLS?
- why isn’t it orange?

All of these will help you decide if what you have is right, almost there and
tweakable, the correct base but serious overhauling or complete replacement.

I have tended mostly towards tweaking the setup except in the case of my MTB.
My first one came and went so fast I barely remember it. I’m tweaking it’s
replacement to all hell though.

[RBW] The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-09 Thread Philip Williamson
I weigh 236 today. I think a Bomba/Hunq is overkill for _me_!

I’d ride that San Marcos. 35mm tires work surprisingly well, even for someone
100lbs heavier. They used to be huge. Deep gravel is safer with 38s, but who
can afford extra gravel these days?

That said, I just put a deposit down on a custom Fitz road bike with 60mm tires
and a dropper post.

Reason #4752 why all bikes should be sized by C-to-C toptube, or vitual
thereof. The seattube number fluctuates wildy, and is about useless for
determining fit even if you get it right.

[RBW] Re: The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-09 Thread Collin A
Heyo,

I'm about 145 so I know how you feel in regards to buying an overbuilt
bike, and you could probably get away with a less-burly bike like an App or
an Atlantis (even those are probably overkill...). That being said, if you
end up doing more rough-and-tumble roads like you are describing (while
fully loaded for bikepacking) having a more burly bike leads to more peace
of mind so you don't feel like you are nursing a precious frame down a
rough route. For context, I'm an Earthquake and Dam engineer so a little
bit of conservatism can go a long way for peace of mind :)

I didn't really answer your question, but I guess my suggestion is a little
extra weight in the frame is worth it!

Good luck,
Collin A

Likely the *whole 3-day journey* was 215 miles. There are 35-40-something
miles between Santa Rosa and Fairfax. Guys, it's a slight case of sentence
infrastructure issues, that's all. *Chapeau*, Nick! Sounds like an awesome
ride on a great bike!

(There are, however, 2,921.3 miles between Santa Rosa and *Ms.* Fairfax, a
popular cafe in my neck of the woods. A few years ago, there was a cafe
called Martha on Liberty Street. The cafe was across the street from
Washington's
Headquarters . Then
along came this cheeky new cafe, Ms. Fairfax. We all know who Martha was.
Sally Fairfax was George's mistress. Not long after the new cafe opened,
Martha pulled up stakes and moved to somewhere in Oregon.)

I always draw a schematic of my panniers and where everything is packed

BTW Bill, I was up on the Route just south of the Wyoming border about a
week and a half ago. It was hot. And I'm from Tucson. It was hot. Mr. Sun
was pretty intense at that high elevation and it didn't get chilly at
night. All I needed was a wool T and vest. Make sure you have your rain

[RBW] Re: Blagh hints: A mountain bike and a bike to carry baby

2018-07-09 Thread iamkeith
Well, heck. There's not much to glean there regarding the mountain bike.
At one point, I think Grant said some prototypes would be available to
ride this month? Is that still the case and has anybody seen them? I
had hoped to be able to do so in person, but our CA trip fell through.

[RBW] The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Sean! Fantastic question(s).

First, the weight of the engine is separate from any gear the bike carries. It
doesn’t matter how much you, the engine, weigh, putting 50 pounds of gear on a
bike is going to change how it rides. Lighter tubing more so than stiffer
tubing.

Where you carry gear also matters. Front or back (Rivendells have geometry for
all rear or add some to the front if you want, entirely personal preference).
Weight on top of a back rack has a higher center of gravity than that same
weight in panniers down lower (just pack semi-balanced! Grin.).

Riding smart and “unloading” the engine off the seat for bumps etc, allows a
lighter frame to do more, but keep in mind that a load can’t unweight and will
impact in all those bumps and washboards even when you unweight.

So, a lighter engine can ride a lighter tubed bike for road, but as soon as you
add in trail and/or touring and/or bikepacking (the best and most challenging
of both trail and touring!) I’d suggest a stiffer frame. But keep in mind that
Grant has you covered and describes very well the range a bike can do well.
Just based on what you’ve described, it sounds like an App. or Atlantis would
be perfect, and easily handle what you’re going to throw at it.

Give Riv a holler. They’d love to talk with you and help you out! It’s what
they do!

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-09 Thread Sean Steinle
So, I see lots of discussion around how a bike handles for tall/heavy
riders. What I don't see is much about us featherweights. Is it because we
don't have to worry about it, or what? I'm 125 pounds if I'm lucky, and I'm
lusting after a Bomba/Hunq. The thing is though, I'm wondering if it's
overkill. I live in Kansas and have endless miles of country roads with
loose, large gravel that I want to explore, and dip my toes into some
bikepacking. I also commute to work, and buying a new bike will likely mean
selling my Titanium Brommie, so this new bike will see plenty of paved
roads for commuting duty as well.

I bought a Soma San Marcos (54 cm 700c version) frame on an impulse,
without doing any research. Everything that Grant has said about it though
is that it's made with lightweight tubing and is a road bike. I was
originally thinking about doing a 650b conversion to get 42s under there,
but now I'm second guessing it with Grant's "this is a road bike" remarks.
With my interest in lots of gravel riding and bikepacking, this frame seems
like a poor choice.

Sorry for the long-winded post. I think my real question boils down to:
does being very light let me pick whichever frame I want as long as tire
clearance and geo are good, without the worry about putting too much stress
on the frame on rough surfaces? Or is a Hunq/Bomba still a good choice for
me?

[RBW] FS: Quill Stems

2018-07-09 Thread Michael Ullmer
Cross-Post from the i-BOB list, figured there could be some interest here.

1) Nitto Technomic Deluxe 90mm 26.0 Clamp - $35 shipped CONUS - There's a
few horizontal marks above the max ht. line, see pics. The finish on the
neck is still quite good. I'd give the stem an 8/10 for condition.

2) Salsa Cro-mo 130mm 26.0 Clamp - $35 shipped CONUS - This was the one
Salsa stem I was holding on to because of the rise of the stem, which is
more in line with the types of handlebar setups I'm using these days, but I
found a Ritchey Force quill stem with an integrated cable hanger that is
replacing this one. The salsa sticker has taken a beating, see pics.

Eric is right.
My edeluxeII was manufactured as hanging edeluxe model. Designed to hang

Now Boulder Bikes/renehere bikes told me one can take an* upright *edeluxeII

FWIW, I have used Albas and Choco norms. I don't believe there are three
hand positions. A friend with a SH had Choco norms and he just went with a

like the Choco's and prefer the Billie flipped. Bars are personal, like
shoes, you gotta try different ones to really know what works for you. I

Hmm, I didn't catch that. I'm not even sure how you turn Fairfax to Santa Rosa
into 215 miles..

[RBW] Re: FS: Albastache Bar, Brooks C19, B IQ-XS Dynamo Light, Shimano Exage Crankset

2018-07-09 Thread David B
Albastache bars are sold.
Updated list with prices lowered on saddle and crankset.

Contact off-list if interested in anything.
Paypal for payment please. Regular goods/services is fine.
I can combine shipping with other items in my webstore (which I won't list
here), treetop.bigcartel.com.
Thanks,
David

2. Brooks All-Weather C19 Saddle - bought this from Riv during the Hail
Mary thing, mounted it once, went for an 'end of the alley & back' ride, I
like it, just don't have a bike for it right now as I swapped up stuff with
the bike it was on - $90 shipped

4. Shimano Exage Crankset - painted silver finish similar to Shimano's
'silver' painted hubs and brakes, cranks were used on a short ride, were
previously new-old-stock - I set them up with 39t and 25t new Willow
chainrings and left the outer ring spot empty - $40 shipped, photos here:
https://tinyurl.com/y7yl3l2s

5. Nitto Tallux Stem - 13cm reach, 25.4mm clamp, 225mm tall quill - new in
packaging - $70 shipped

I like my Road Runner Co-Pilot. I use it for my phone and reading glasses, but
a camera would fit about the same. It's a little bit smaller and cheaper if you
just want it for the one thing you can easily grab..the Bar Tender seems more
of a "stuff all your stuff in it" bag.

Probably not a big problem there but I am amazed by the growth of materials
to be packed when exposed to dew or humidity.

Maybe things won't move smoothly against themselves or others when so
exposed. How ever it happens, things feel like they won't easily fit. Felt
it trying to repack bike luggage, backpacks, sleeping bags, stuff sacks,
and anything with a canvas cover or bag for it during my olive drab days
(and nights).
