And, for a while now I've been thinking there should be RATCHETING STRAPS 
made on a scale for bikes.  Better than cinching, ratcheting can't be beat.

Thank you for the feedback.  I wish the Jones was easier to test ride, but 
not many shops carry it.  However, my in-laws do live near Talent so I 
might have to swing by.  The more I ride the Joe, and now that I have 
Boscos on it, the more I like the fat tire, long chainstay design.  Of 
course the Joe has 52, with the Jones a "short" 48. $1800 seems really 
reasonable, though shipping is quite a bit extra. The Jones seems like a 
good Rivish mountain bike with discs.

Chicharrones are what inspired commercially produced pork rinds. 
The carniceria up the street makes them two ways, one is similar to pork rinds, 
the other has more skin and meat. Those are better for simmering with your 
beans or dicing up and sprinkling on top.

I've never tried Triscuits and hot sauce; I've got a pint bottle of
Louisiana hot sauce (and a pint of Sriracha, for that matter) so I should

If you are heading towards Reno from the Bay Area, before you get to Donner 
Summit, there is a town called Nyack. 
Park there and ride through Emigrant Gap till you get past Sugar Bowl Ski 
Resort. A bit further up the road, the view opens up to see Donner Lake. 
There’s lots of Granite Boulders to find a place to just sit and take it all 
in. 
In my humble opinion, it’s well worth it. 
It’s where I always stop and have coffee.  
It’s a nice ride down to the lake from there but it’s a bit of a climb back up. 
You could also park closer to the Ski Resort so it’s less of a ride. 
The Squeeze Inn in Truckee is a really good breakfast spot.

FYI - An 11-speed Shimano mountain cassette will fit on a 9-sp hub. But 
then you'd also want an 11-sp derailer and shifter. Not all that expensive, 
IMHO. I just made the switch on my non-Riv mtb.

my Sam Hillborne... Not sure how the modern 4-arm black crank is gonna look 
with the frame, but I was planning on posting a few pictures when it's all done

Earlier this year I came across this sign in a deep valley in the North 
Moors National Park in England. It had a Rivendell feel for me. The name,

of Lamy.  Mix of paved multi-use path and hardpack dirt.

[RBW] Riv bags for sale on website

Or more accurately, not for sale.  Was just on the shop website and was amazed 
at how the majority of bags are either out of stock or discontinued. I have 
more bags than a normal human should own but I always liked their offerings. I 
recall some talk a while back about the maker retiring or something along those 
lines so perhaps that is happening ?

I have advice in the form of a film that I haven't watched yet.  This is a 
risky recommendation because some of our list members are extremely 
offended by the marketing stylings of Rapha, but here goes:

This film appears to be ~82 minutes long.  No doubts there will be 
something to annoy every sensitivity therein. I like Rapha cycling clothing 
and Rapha filmmaking.  I wore a wool Rapha Team Sky sweater to work this 
morning.

Waterford built AHH. The bike is in excellent condition with just a few
paint chips.

[RBW] Slightly OT: Route 66

My son & I are a few days away from a road trip to the West Coast. We are 
taking our bikes & my plan is to do some riding!!!
Heading out of Dallas I plan on hitting Palo Duro Canyon, Santa Fe, Sadona, 
gradually making our way up to the Fresno area & then a few days in the bay 
area. Including Repack, Rivendell, etc.
On the way back we might come back via Reno & Colorado way?
My question is; does anybody have a recommendations for trails, or routes?
Ideally 15 miles trail or 20 miles road without excessive climbing (unless the 
view is really worth it!). We are doing this real loosey goosey,  but generally 
the plan is drive to town, get hotel, sleep, wakeup, ride then pack up & go to 
next destination. Riding is more of an excuse to site see then serious biking.
Ideas?

One evening long ago, I was riding my '99 Joe Starck gofast fixie custom
home from work without lights because I hadn't anticipated leaving so late.
Crossing a 4-lane, 50 mph boulevard on the bike path, I was a bit too eager
and misjudged my aim for the handicapped cutout on the opposite sidewalk.
Bam! I bent the fork back enough to easily see the difference in angle, but
strangely, not only were top and down tube unaffected, but I didn't even
pinch flat, let along bend a rim -- and I was riding 22 mm actual 571 bcd
Conti Grands Prix.

I made it the remaining 10 miles home in the increasing darkness; the bike
felt odd but I had no problem riding it. Rivendell very courteously
arranged a discounted replacement fork by Curt Goodrich.

Bah!  and you call yourself a cheapskate?  $8 each is a king's ransom.  Any 
real spendthrift/skinflint would substitute a Coughlan's Arno strap for an 
Irish strap or a Bulgarian strap.  Arno straps are closer to $2.50 each and 
are functionally identical.  True ascetics will approve of the black 
colorway.  

I approve of the more colorful Irish Bulgarian straps, but there is 
definitely a cheaper alternative.  
For what it's worth, I generally disapprove of bungee cords, and oddly 
approve of bungee nets.  

For the twelve-pack box application, non-stretching Arno straps is my top 
recommendation, with Bulgarian straps as an EXTRAVAGANT alternative

Yep, the 8- and 9-speed XT rear derailleurs can accommodate a 36t cog.

If you want even lower gearing, you could fit a 40t cog by adding a
Wolftooth Roadlink.  Sunrace makes 11-40 9-speed cassettes.

Yeah, hard to tell from photos.  But I recommend taking it to a competent
shop that can check its alignment.

Patrick, you said smooth roads for short distances. I would think that 3 bungee 
cords would do the trick just fine. I would "X" two of them side to side, and 
then one longitudinally with the rack. I've found that a pretty good strategy 
for a box load.

Ana, I find one strap is adequate ... until it isn’t. Grin. On rough 
roads/trails, one strap, no matter how snug, allows the load to twist around 
and that can get interesting. Thus, my minimum of two, and adding a third to 
the seat post when bulkier. I did 40 lbs in my ShopSack this way recently and 
the load handled beautifully.

Looks to me like it might have had at least a mild front end collision,
although the cracks etc. would generally be on the bottom of the top and
down tubes...  Maybe a roof rack incident?  The BB marks might be from a
kickstand, highly unlikely the BB shell has been compromised in any way
(IMHO, of course).

Once you try straps, you’ll never go to bungee cords again. One Irish strap is 
all you need for this particular load, but 
#youcanneverhavetoomanyjohnsirishstraps ;)

PS - Do get the Captain Hook net. Great for the basket —just like the red one— 
but in a summery cool color :)

The keys to odd loads with multiple loose pieces of varying densities (say you 
add pork rinds to your beer run) are:
1. Wrap in cloth of some sort, so all the bits help hold each other in place. 
I’ve used a tarp, but prefer a Shopsack as this zips shut.
2. Secure with with three “slices” of a strap. Two can work (one on each side 
of the rear rack), but a third anchoring the top of the load to the seat post 
or saddlesack makes for a very secure load that survives washboard and jouncing.

Bungees- I make my own bungee straps with cord and hooks found at my LMS
(local marine shop). Allows me to ensure that I have bungees on hand for
all occasions in the right length to get the right tension for the intended
payload.

But cinch strap are still all around better.

and heavier packages. I run two around the box left to right and one front to 
back. Does that make sense?
It holds things very securely for post office, farmers markets or work runs.

Sorry, again, to clarify more fully: Box of 12 bottles. Want to plunk on
top of rack and strap down somehow without bothering with other bag -- have
2 panniers already. Heck, have 4 panniers and 2 remaining Carradices.

I thought of a net, and I've owned one, but it wasn't taut enough to hold a
box firmly.

Suggestions for *good* bungees? Otherwise, the Irish strap. (Only, now it's
the Bulgarian strap, apparently.)

I like cargo nets (bungees, but in net form), as they wrap around 
everything. If you're carrying bottles, I'd put them in a paper bag and 
then cargo net them. Probably add an Irish strap for additional peace of 
mind.

I like the idea of 12 small bar bags. But I fear they would cost more than
3 or 4 straps or bungees.

So, straps or bungees? (No backpack, thanks. It's a short distance over
smooth pavement, so bottles in box on rack is not a problem.)

Let's try bungees first, since they're so easy to use. There must be nice
bungees. The cheap ones I've used all fray and narrow and eventually break,
which is why I am not confident of them, but perhaps nice ones will be more
secure. Can anyone recommend from experience bungees that hold tightly and
don't fray and break?

If not bungees, then it will be time to make a Riv order for several Irish
straps.
