[RBW] Bicycle Commuting

2018-07-21 Thread Ian A
I think it depends on where you store the bike at work. If it's kept secure and
inside at your workplace, something like the Sam Hillborne would be superb.
However, if you are to be locking the bicycle outside and left unattended for
hours at a time, a Rivendell might attract the wrong kind of attention.

My commute is a little over six miles and in summer months I ride a lightweight
touring bike which I thoroughly enjoy. It has fenders, rack and always-on
dynamo lighting. I just never tire of the commute.

In winter months I ride an 80's MTB with studded tires to deal with ice and
snow. Most days I love that winter commute too.

I would encourage you to start commuting by bike again as soon as possible. If
you can find MUPs and quiet residential streets to use instead of main
thoroughfares, the commute can be the best part of the day.

Joe, you have a lot of equity to burn thru before murder comes to mine, so
no worries there. There are lots of bikes with disc brakes, and I know I

I'm not the world's expert, I'm just trying to make a line of bikes that

[RBW] Re: Bicycle Commuting

2018-07-21 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I can recommend a Clementine, aka Clem L. Of all my commuter bikes, that
was definitely one of my all-time favorites. The long wheelbase, the
Boscos, the step-through--it was all just right. Very civilized but it
really cruised. My commute was 7 miles, a little hilly. I think an upright
posture is good in commuter traffic. With back o bike bags in back and a
basket up front, also great for stopping for groceries on the way home.

Re: [RBW] Bicycle Commuting

2018-07-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I stopped doing the entire distance entirely by bike circa 2006; 2006 to
7/2008 (when I quit that job) I rode ~ 5 miles down a wooded bike path,
caught an express bus across town on 66/Central, then rode 2-3 more miles.
But I was 50 in 2005, and started feeling that pushing the anaerobic
threshold for 16 to 20 miles (depending on taking a detour or not) and
return in the evening made me feel tired all the time. Fixed gear, btw. I
used to break 60 min clock running, morning and evening rush hours, through
the middle of town (Central/Gold/Central) and the best time I recall for 16
miles was 54 minutes, clock running at all the stop lights along Central.
I'd regularly beat the Route 66 bus: pass it at Gold and 2nd and keep ahead
of it until just west of Central and Juan Tabo.

But even in full summer -- ~100F high today -- the humidity drops pretty
low in the afternoon; it's 7:20 pm MT and it's 96 and 14%, highish, since
the monsoon clouds are trying to break in. Mid June, 100*F and 5%. Far, far
different than the east coast, where I've also lived.

Re: [RBW] Bicycle Commuting

2018-07-21 Thread Patrick Moore
+1. I used to commute 15-20 miles each way, 7 miles of gradual climbing, on
everything, from $150 beaters to custom Rivendells; and with Rivendells,
from fully equipped 3X7s to a custom, stripped-down, lightweight custom Riv
Road gofast fixie. Fun whatever I was riding.

That said, for the perfect single-purpose Rivendell cross-town commuter,
I'd consider a Sam Hill or a Roadini.

[RBW] Re: ISO inexpensive but decent utility bike; possible large BMX or possibly city bike with kickback hub

2018-07-21 Thread Patrick Moore
To clarify further: I will exhaust all usedn and new possiblities including
used mtbs on craigslist, but I'd like to see first what used, 50 mm tired,
horizontal dropout options are available. The ideal will be something like
that Fairdale 26" BMX bike with a kickback that gives you a, say, 36 t ring
and 19 t cog for a 49 and 68" gears.

I am open to frames, wheelsets, cranksets, and cockpits. I expect to
upgrade.

Perhaps a decent used rigid mtb frame that I could convert with tensioner,
kickback, and say North Road bar and controls.

Yes, I'm choosing what *I *think best, but I also think I've got a good
idea about what would work well for the man. And, I might as well have some
fun with the project, too.

[RBW] Bicycle Commuting

2018-07-21 Thread WETH
Doug,
Yes, any Riv would handle the task well. Having commuted (8 hilly miles each
way) on an LHT, Atlantis, Romulus, and a Cheviot, my favorite is the Cheviot
with Little Big Ben tires, fenders, rear saddlesack and a front basket. A
wonderful bike all around.
Good luck,

Yeah, any Riv is made for a good commute! Just throw a cheapo front/rear

If it has too many gears, take off the shifters, and adjust the derailleur
limiting screws to whatever gear works best. Or put it in the middle ring,
take off the front shifter, and let him have 7 rear gears.

I know you said used, but Fairdale makes some pretty bulletproof and versatile
bikes for cheap. Bonus with new for a rider with less desire to pick up a
wrench is that most bike shops (at least my LBS) offer some sort of a service
plan for the first year to keep it running well.

https://store.fairdalebikes.com/pages/2018-fairdale-bikes/

My buddy just got a Fairdale Weekender and he loves it. That’s $800, but there
are a few in the $500 range that might be great.

The Flat Bar Surly Crosscheck is around $800 and it comes with a rack.

Any Riv would work. The Sam is probably the middle bike between a lighter road

Fenders and probably wider tires I might forgo the Roadini.

[RBW] ISO inexpensive but decent utility bike; possible large BMX or possibly city bike with kickback hub

2018-07-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I know someone who is looking for a job and who does not have a car; he's
walked 2 hours only to find that he didn't get the job.

He's very interested in a usable utility bike for someone about my size,
5'10", tho' I think more of his length is in his legs. My ideal size is a
60 X 56.6 c-c, but I've happily ridden everything from 54 to 60, c-c (54
was a custom Riv Road based on original All Rounder).

I can and probably will replace tires for, say, Big Apples. Can also
replace saddle and consumables, but would like decent brakes and drivetrain.

As far as drive train, the simpler and more bulletproof the better. I think
he'd be fine with a large BMX bike, so one of these, probably 24" wheels
(do they make 26" models?).

Repeat for emphasis: I think a large BMX type bike would be best; the best
drivetrain will be SS or perhaps a kick back hub, assuming that these last
are bulletproof.

Standard components best.

Paint not a big consideration, but all equal, nice rather than horrible.

To quote Justin Wilson again, "Whatcha got?"

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Is the Roadeo gone?

2018-07-21 Thread Joe Bernard
It says 5-8 months, the last I heard was 9. Which explains why Riv/Grant has
virtually given up the Waterford frames business: There's just too much money
and time required of a buyer who might as well make the 'full custom Rivendell'
leap at that point. They're getting perfectly good bikes from Taiwan you can
ride home right now for reasonable money.

[RBW] Thoughts on Space Behind Seat Tube on LWB Bikes

2018-07-21 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
On my Toyo Atlantis, my new UL Big Agnes one man tent poles fit behind the seat
tube with a millimeter in length clearance, running 2.35 tires. If I had a
smaller frame, the poles would be too long. I was quite delighted to find they
fit. I was straping my old tent poles on the side of my rear rack parallel to
the ground and the poles stuck out the rear. My setup is now nice and compact.
Thanks Grant for leaving room!
