2018-09-07 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've got it mostly built now, at least enough to take for a short test
spin, and I can tell I am going to have a lot of fun on this bike! I've
got a temporary seatpost in it, and I just ordered bar tape, but I'll post
pics when they are in place. Also, having bar end shifters on the
Albatross really opens up a second hand placement in the curves, which was
awkward with the top mounted thumbies I had on them on the other bike.

I’ve used the Tiagras, basic Tektros, and TRP RRLs. The TRPs are the most
comfortable for me and look pretty. They offer multiple points of contact on
the levers and a solid perch to sit on if you like to ride on the hoods a lot.

YMMV of course.

Sale price does *not *include:
- Pedals

I bought it new from Riv as a 'complete' in July of 2017. You can see
Riv's spec's for the complete drop bar build here:
https://www.rivbike.com/products/sam-hillborne-complete-drop-bar (no more
58s at Riv, evidently, but build is the same).

The only mod's I had done were to:
1. Replace the 48 Noodle that comes with a 58 with a 46, and wrap with
black cork tape+twine
2. Add a Pletscher kickstand.

I put the original Kenda 38mm tires back on it. They have about 50 mi on
them.

I just cleaned it up, and honestly, it looks brand new, except for a single
very small 3mm scratch on the drive side seat stay, shown in one of the
pic's. No rust. The paint and decals are pristine.

I bought this from a list member earlier this year. It was a fun build

- White Industries Eno dingle crank (38/35)
- White Ind Dos Eno freewheel (16/18)
- Surly double fixed cog (17/20)
- Paul track hub + Velocity Dyad 32H rim on the rear.
- Front wheel is a Velocity Synergy 36H laced to a Shimano Deore XT hub.
- Tektro canti's
- Kalloy Uno seatpost
- Kickstand plate (but no kickstand)

I bought this from another list member. My additions after I got it (New =

- New Brooks leather tape grips
- New Tektro Mountain levers
- New Jagwire brake cables + housing
- New KMC Chain, Z610HX series 1-spd, silver
- New Continental Contact Speed 700x42 tires (approx 15 mi on them)

[RBW] Re: ISO Chris King Rear Hub, 135mm, 36h, low flange, silver (Non Disc)

2018-09-07 Thread Philip Williamson
The last time I've seen the King/Bontrager hubs on ebay, they were hundreds
of dollars. The 1999 set I have on the Bontrager Privateer are 24/28 hole
hubs. The main difference between the Bontrager version and the Classic
Kings of the era were that the Bontrager version has beefed-up flanges to
support the radial front and half-radial rear lacing that the stock wheels
came with. IIRC.

I did get a silver 32h 135 King classic rear hub from ebay for ~$120
shipped a couple years ago.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tektro TRP RRL vs. Shimano Tiagra type BRL400 brake levers?

2018-09-07 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
The TRP levers are far superior in ergonomics (for me) when braking on
descents etc. The major difference that you might notice is the flatness
in terms of the transition from the bars to the hoods. The Shimano has a
very smooth/unnoticeable transition (on the bars I've tried), whereas you
might notice a little bump for the TRP levers, but the gain in ergonomics
makes it worth it for me to have the TRPs.

there are also some older bontrager branded hubs (from early 90s 26"
wheelsets) that are actually chris king. you can tell just by looking at
the hubshell and some sellers list this. might try looking for that, too.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tektro TRP RRL vs. Shimano Tiagra type BRL400 brake levers?

2018-09-07 Thread Tommy Patterson
I was bent on buying a pair of the TRP levers for their looks, but once I
held them at my LBS I found the hood shape where my hands would sit
"pointy" and somewhat slim for my larger hands. To me they felt like a
cross between the BRL 400s and a modern, boxy brifter. If you like the feel
of a flatter, larger platform try out the basic Tektro brake levers. They
feel surprisingly good and still have the campy-style brake release button.
And they're half the price...

[RBW] Stronglight Fenders

2018-09-07 Thread jandrews
Hello
Curious if anyone has used the new Stronglight fenders that P.W. sells?
https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/str-mg.php
I see they come in a 700x55 which is what I think I need to max out my 1st
gen S.H.
Currently I have 50mm fenders and am running 700x43 tires. There is a
little bit of wiggle room at the chain stay bridge and under the fork crown
to go bigger, but I know from experience I can not fit the 700x60
stainless Berthoud fenders I purchased many years ago.
I have not seen a lot of 55mm width fenders for 700c wheels, so these may
do the trick.
Also curious about coverage...does anyone have them installed on their bike?
thank you

I am in the process of converting my Clementine to the Jones bars with the
2.5 rise on a VO stem (currently Boscomoose). I think I will end up with
silver shifters on the SunRace clamps. I love the way that the base on the
SR clamps can be rotated.

For bars take look at either a Jones bar or the Surly Open bar. The
black only Surly has 53 degree sweep(25.4 stem), the silver/black
Jones(31.8 stem) 45 degrees. Surly is 66cm wide and the Jones is 66 or 71.

I suspect much of not liking friction shifting has to do with the

2018-09-07 Thread phil k
I made the switch from Shimano 105 aero's to TRP. I like the TRPs so far.
Looks great, but its a bit more ergonomic. Easier to brake in the hoods,
roomier, and the quick release function is nice if you run big tires.

Buy the TRP , they certainly can't be worse than the Shimano you have
! The larger bodied levers are a whole lot roomier than the "old" style,
which I always found too small.

[RBW] Re: Tektro TRP RRL vs. Shimano Tiagra type BRL400 brake levers?

2018-09-07 Thread Ryan M.
They are, in my experience. The trps are a little wider and have that extra
hand perch up top which is somewhat useful. The button that releases the
lever is pretty useful, IMHO, especially when hooked up to v-brakes or
cantis; it just helps put slack in the cables to remove tires. The lever
portion is a different shape too, but I think that is neither here nor
there. The Tiagras are less expensive, especially considering you get some
brake cable and housing with them.

[RBW] Tektro TRP RRL vs. Shimano Tiagra type BRL400 brake levers?

2018-09-07 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Riv sells both models.

The Shimano type has always been good for me but lately my big thumb joints are
hurting after riding with them. Maybe I am getting some arthritis in them and
the levers are digging into my thumb/index web too much (that’s the joint in
there). Also, the Shimanos have that hooked top point that pokes back into that
thumb/index crotch when I use the alt grip holding the very tops of levers.
Shimanos very narrow width, too.

Was wondering if the TRP RRL are more hand friendly?

Anyone can relate their experiences with both?

I don't but I'd check ebay for old MTB wheels. I have exactly what you're
in search of laced to a 26" rim that I found on ebay for $75 shipped. It
was pretty much new. No one seems to be interested in 26" rim brake wheels
or has the foresight to delace one I suppose.
