For dynohubs, 've used (1) 2 Shimano models, (2) 2 SON models, (3) 2 SP

different bottle dynamos, most 6 volt, but 1 high-end 12 volt, and (6)
several bb dymamos. All flicker at low speeds.

That's very nice! I briefly experimented with dirt drops on the Clem (with
a 100mm Nitto Dirt Drop stem), but found that the reach was maybe an inch
too long even with my proportionally-crazy-long torso. Your idea of an
Analog stem is interesting, though - that might be just the thing for a
re-try of the idea... Good times!

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish Rides near UNC Chapel Hill

2018-10-19 Thread tc
Tony,
I live in Raleigh, NC, and ride the paved trails of the 100+ mile Raleigh
greenway system often. The Neuse River trail follows the river for 20+
miles, and has lots of nice bridges and wildlife. Last Sunday I was on my
big green tractor I saw 5 deer, several Great Blue Herons, and my first
Bald Eagle of the season. Chapel Hill is about 30mi and 30 min away from
several points on the Raleigh greenway trail system. If you have an Apple
device, search for the RGreenway app
.

Here's the main web site for the trail system, with links to maintenance
notices, etc.:
https://www.raleighnc.gov/parks/content/PRecDesignDevelop/Articles/CapitalAreaGreenwayTrailSystem.html

If you're looking for single track, you might try these trails:

   - Harris Lake County Park
    (Near the
Shearon Harris nuclear plant. This is south of Chapel Hill). Might think
twice about doing these trails w/out a squishy fork...
   - Umstead State Park
   in
Raleigh. Can do on a rigid bike (used to do it on my Vaya with 44mm tires
   easily)
   - Lake Crabtree County Park
(might
oughta have a squishy fork here too, but can be done if you're willing to
get off and push at times)

Carboro is a nice little town right beside Chapel Hill. Cool little bike
shop there called Back Alley Bikes (Surly,
Kona, Giant mainly).

Oak City Cycling and Frank's Cyclery
would be your best bike shops in
Raleigh.

Contact me offline if you have any questions - will be glad to help if I
can. I don't get to Chapel Hill much, but I should be able to point you in
the right direction at least.

[RBW] WTB: Banana bag/saddle wedge or something to hold a u-lock

2018-10-19 Thread Drw
I keep buying these and selling them in favor of a larger bag, yet here I am
again.
I need something that’ll hold a u-lock and a small repair kit. The saddle
wedge/banana sack has proven a good option but I’m open to others. Really
anything that’ll sit on saddle loops and hold those 2 things. Budget minded
currently, so beat up or ugly or not exactly what I’m looking for is ok.

[RBW] Taking Clem to a different level

2018-10-19 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Yes, nicely done! I have similar hopes for an eventual rebuild of my 65cm Clem
H. I previously acquired a Crust Leather drop bar (from their first run of
those ridiculously wide 66.6cm drops) and a 26.0 zero/0mm reach (w)right stem
from Analog cycles to pair with said bars. These were both initially intended
for another frame but with multiple bike projects now on hold (for various
reasons) I’ve been thinking I’ll save these for the Clem once my son outgrows
the front child seat we are currently using. At that point I’ll build up
another rear loaded dad bike and start from scratch and overhaul the Clem
beginning with the Crust bars, Analog stem, spare tektro vbrake/long pull drop
levers and the stock v brakes.

Enjoy!

[RBW] Re: Washington, D.C. Rides/Recommendations.

2018-10-19 Thread Steve Cole
For a very nice 16+ mile loop that begins anywhere you cross the Potomac
River from D.C. (Key Bridge, Rooselvel Big, Memorial Bridge or the 14th
Street Bridge), the Arlington Loop includes a great section of the Mount
Vernon Trail, a very wooded section of the Washington & Old Dominion (W)
Rail Trail, and a return section of the Martha Custis Trail that brings you
back to the river to connect with where you started. The W is a long
rail trail that goes from Shirlington in Arlington out to Purcellville in
the foothills of the Shenandoah Mountains. This is a 45 mile ride one way
ride that goes from more or less suburban through, small towns and rural
areas. Quite lovely.

[RBW] Re: One month VO Touring rear hub review.

2018-10-19 Thread Ash
Have this hub on my Joe A. 14 months and 3k or so miles later, it is good
as new.

That said, because of the loud ratchet sound, I was thinking of replacing
the wheel in favor of XT hub.

Thanks to Lum for opening this thread. And William, can't thank you enough
for the grease idea. The problem is solved!

I squeezed a quarter tube of grease into the ratchet well. No I can barely
hear it. It is so quiet I'm beginning to wonder if all that grease is
going to cause some other problem! Anyway, I enjoy the rides a lot more
now.

oh and I had one small issue with this hub. I do not know the names of
various parts of the hub, but the thing that slides into the frame was ever
so slightly bigger. Had to file that piece just a bit.

I've tried / liked / tried-to-like all of these, but more or less
figured out what works best for me at this point. These are all good,
if not great pedals however -- the problem is they are also taking up
valuable garage space at this point.

How about $20 (shipped CONUS) for any of the MKS, and $25 for the
Shimano. BONUS: if you buy 2 pairs, I'll *throw in free* an additional
set of MKS Sylvan Tracks (*slightly mismatchy: I had 2 orphan
drive-side, so swapped in a left spindle and now have a workable set,
just ignore that backward kicktab). LMK, thanks! - Joe

[RBW] Re: Bike sizing by PBH, and wanting to give drop bars one more chance

2018-10-19 Thread Mat Grewe
I also ride with Grip King pedals; you can actually lengthen them! The
"grip" part is held on to the body by M5 screws. You can remove them, put
in an aluminum spacer and use a longer screw to attach it all back
together. A cheaper experiment than springing for catalyst pedals.

A few words of caution though...

-Don't screw the screws on too tight as the threaded body is aluminum and
can strip (happened to me). If that does, I used a #12-24 socket cap screw
(had to order online) as the threading is slightly bigger than an M5. Big
enough to bite new threads into the aluminum, but not too big so it still
screwed in successfully. Bonus, a 5/32 hex wrench is the same size as a
4mm!

-Be careful with how long of a spacer you use. The longer the spacer, the
more force is on the screw. And use as thick of a spacer to spread the
force. I don't know the breaking point, but use some judgement here.
Anyway, even a 1/4" spacer on each end can make a difference in the overall
feel. I think that a 1/4" spacer on both ends would match the usable
length of a Catalyst, which is 5" if I recall correctly (website says 5.6",
but some of that is not usable length due).

-An aluminum spacer is great as it is cheap, but lighter than steel. Nylon
compresses and I had screws loosen a little on me because of that
sponginess. Nylon is cheap though and strong enough to experiment with for
a few rides (in my experience at least).

That being said, I found that Grip Kings in their original length and
slightly thicker shoes worked better for me. I went from a 10mm super
flexy sole to about 15mm slightly firmer, but still flexible, sole and have
had no issues since.

2018-10-19 Thread lconley
The 556 was an earlier version of the 559. If you look at the backside of a
559, the casting says 556. The 556 has the simple quick release, not sure
if the cable adjusters are different. I know that I have both - I prefer
the 556 because of the simpler quick release and the labeling is easy to
polish off. I have one or two 559s lying around at home - most likely
fronts for recessed - let me see what I have when I get home. Do you have a
38T 122 BCD chainring?

[RBW] Re: Bike sizing by PBH, and wanting to give drop bars one more chance

2018-10-19 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch

Hi Mat and Patrick, I’m totally on board with the floor living. In fact
not being able to sit comfortably on the floor for long periods is what
drove me to work on my hips/hams/glutes. I’ve got plenty of stretches for
them, and they’ve made a difference, but mostly I just try to spend more
time on the floor playing games with my son. I have been active in many
sports most of my life (my night job is teaching fencing and historical
martial arts), but about 5 years ago a metatarsal injury in one foot
severely limited my mobility, and I’m still trying to come back from that
:-( I’m also combating a lifetime of tight hips – for example even as a
kid I couldn’t snowplow on skis without pain, so I learned parallel stops,
and even telemarking to get around it.

I set my current saddle height by aiming for the highest position which
didn’t compromise smooth movement and cadence on one hand, or comfort on
the other. (I can be smooth in more than one style of pedaling, but
keeping the foot level is the most comfortable.) In all my research and
teaching of sports I like to make sure students know how to occasionally
reevaluate their “Goldilocks” point or zone by experimenting with extremes
on either side of it. I make sure they understand whether a certain action
should come from the core or large muscles vs smaller, and how to keep good
body structure. But it’s still important to have a valid test condition,
which is why I like Steve Hogg’s 3 minute test at a defined significant
load to find where you start to lose fluency, and then back it off two
steps, “because not every day is the best day of your life.”

I’ve been riding with Grip King pedals (on the bike I’m trying to replace)
for a long time, keeping the foot level, etc, but I’ve wished for longer
pedals so I will probably look into the Catalyst pedals that Mojo
recommended.

I think my main takeaway from this thread is that my preference for a
slightly lower saddle height is not really an outlier, and that there are
known factors which seem to affect it. I need to find a bike which is big
enough to help me with handlebar height, but my saddle height is reasonably
dialed in, so I shouldn’t go so big as to mess with that.

Best regards,

Eric

[RBW] Re: Bike sizing by PBH, and wanting to give drop bars one more chance

2018-10-19 Thread Mat Grewe
Don't discount Patrick's advice on floor living. I don't do it much, but
the little I have done helps immensely! Another way to stretch those
hamstrings requires a friend, but it is incredibly effective.

-Lay on your back on the floor
-Lift one leg up towards the sky (keeping it straight or only the slightest
bit bent)
-Have your friend continue pushing that leg towards your upper body until
you feel a comfortable deep stretch, then stop
-Hold that for 30-60 seconds (still keeping it straight or only the
slightest bit bent)
-Make sure your other leg remains on the floor as if you were still
laying down normally
-Now is where the stretch really deepens!
-In that same deep stretch position, push your leg forward (away from your
upper body) with as much force as you can while your friend resists your
effort and keeps your leg in the same upward position
-Keep battling with your friend in this position for 5-10 seconds
-Again, make sure your other leg and butt remains on the floor
-Relax and have your friend gently push your leg further towards your upper
body until you feel a comfortable deep stretch again
-Hold for 30-60 seconds
-You will be amazed at how much further your leg stretches after the
resistance session
-Do that resistance session a couple times on one leg, then switch to the
other

Let me know if that doesn't make sense...
