[RBW] RD on Clem L has problem upshifting

2018-11-10 Thread Joe Bernard
Assuming you have the first run which have a sort of clickety-friction shifter,
I would start by adjusting the cable at the derailer. Get it in a gear and look
at the pulleys. If they're directly under the cog, turn the adjuster on the
derailer clockwise enough to move the pulleys slightly right of that cog. It
should have an easier time dropping down to the next smaller cog after that.
Holla back if that doesn't do it.

[RBW] RD on Clem L has problem upshifting

2018-11-10 Thread Dave Redmon
I'm having problems upshifting the rear derailer on my newish Clem L. I have
the stock Sunracer friction shifters. With less than 300 miles on it, mine is
slow to upshift into higher gears when heading onto level ground--sometimes
slipping through 2-3 gears. No slippage downshifting going up hills though. I
installed a new SS cable and a 11" final cable housing and cleaned and lubed
the Shimano Altus RD, but the problem persists. I suspect it's related to long
cable travel. Suggestions?

[RBW] Winter wool baselayer rec needed

2018-11-10 Thread John W
Smartwool 250 weight could fit the bill. Their tops tend to be loose, so if in
doubt size down as a base layer.

I could never go a week between washings with merino base layers. It’s stinks
just as much as anything else would. I hop into the shower with my base layer
on, rinse and hang dry, and do a proper detergent wash about once a week or so.
Which is to say: wool might not be the cure-all you’re seeking.

The model is a Merckx Mourenx. I bought the frame on closeout for about 1/3
of the price when it was a current model, and though it's a road frame, I
mainly built it up with MTB parts (wheels, bars, shifters, drivetrain). The
brakes are Shimano Metrea, which were the only hydraulic discs I could find
that were sold as a set with flat bar levers and flat mount calipers. The
frame is named after the finish town of stage 17 of the 1969 TdF:

Ted - Thank you!! I think 35mm might just work! Anyone have a single or set
of used up 35 mm tires they’d part with for shipping costs i can try out?
Doesn’t have to be anything fancy just roughly true to size.

Pete - yes it is, I flipped the rear wheel and found that the chain length
is marginal for the larger fixed cog...i’ll fix that shortly and give it a
try, it’ll be a first for me when i get it working.

First thorn on the rose... the seat-post is frozen, hard. Lucky its
rideable as is but if it doesn’t work free I’ll have a fun job at some
point unstucking it.

[RBW] Winter wool baselayer rec needed

2018-11-10 Thread EasyRider
I'm looking for a half or quarter zip merino pullover and could use some recs,
especially with regard to weight/warmth.

For the past several winters daily commutes (15 miles round trip, most days the
temp is with 10 degrees of freezing) I've been wearing a very light poly-merino
blend pullovers, a cheapo poly half zip pullover over that (a general all
purpose "jogging" and whatnot), and a vest or windbreaker over that. That's
about right warmth for these parts. But all those poly baselayers means a lot
of laundry because it picks up a stink, and quick. I'd like to get one high
quality merino baselayer and wash once a week. But, I'm uncertain what the
right weight to get is.

I THINK I want something "midweight" but I'm not sure what that means in terms
of spec or labeling to look for. I want something I could wear alone under a
fleece vest most days, and maybe add a packable windbreaker over top, or a
softshell jacket on very cold days. The other requirement is a zip up collar,
not a crew neck.

I checked Riv for options and didn't see any, so what would you recommend?

Don’t be surprise if the insurance company pays for your parts replacement and

Re: [RBW] Surprise New Bike Day

2018-11-10 Thread ted
Tony,

My caliper gives ~1.41" wide for BJP 35mm extralight with tubes at ~55psi
on a H Plus Son TB14 rim. Height is hard to measure precisely but
eyeballing with the caliper id guess maybee 1.35". So in metric ~35.8 wide
and 34.3 tall.

Congratulations on the new ride. Looks very cool.
I've got two 1 speeds (both from RBW) I really like a lot. I strongly
encourage you to put a fixed cog on that hub and try that for at least a
week or two. I was inadvertently introduced to fixed town/commute riding
several decades ago and boy am I glad that happened, been using one off and
on ever since. If you don't care for it forget it. But who knows perhaps
you'll be hooked like I was. There's nothing like trying for knowing.
I gather many here don't care for toe clips, but I kinda like em. For a non
cleated shoe the MKS clone of the WI clone of the Lyotard MB pedal is
really great. Just file / cut off the silly tabs on the inside side of the
platform. With a set of Soma deep large toe clips my bulky Keen sandals
work fine.

[RBW] No love for the Albastache?

2018-11-10 Thread 'Forrest' via RBW Owners Bunch
I’ve had three bikes with Albastache bars (only one now, though), and two with
Moustache (none at the moment, though). I really like the Albastache a lot.
Multiple hand positions, easy access to shifters and to the brakes. Great
leverage for climbing and nice aero position when you need it. An underrated
bar, in my opinion.

[RBW] wheel build suggestions

2018-11-10 Thread bo richardson
my atlantis was loaned to a friend who was going to do some work on it for me.
a young womman on her cell phone hit him and the bike. he ended up on the hood.
Michael is banged up, mostlyok but wont know for sure till osteo visit on the
20th.
the bike seems mostly ok. Brooks is damaged, tape is damaged, rear wheel is
wrecked.

Am planning shop-based both wheel rebuild. Schmidt front hub.
Rear hub i think is DX, ie shimano 105quality.

is there a price/value upgrade hub i should buy? it will probably be out of my
pocket
I dont want White or Phil expense. LX.?IRD?
Will keep Schmidt front hub.

What about nice silver rims? I usually run 1.5” tires. But possible next owner
may want wider tires?

Thanks
Bo Richardson

[RBW] Re: Albastache Conversion--first ride review

2018-11-10 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Fantastic, Bill! I am amazed how well I do riding in smoke just by taking it
slower. Smoke from only 100 miles away is pretty gritty still. Not 3 miles away
gritty, but still. I’d be fascinated your experience with singletrack and
Albastache, should you go that crazy. Grin. For me, they shine in a whole new
way on the trail.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Albastache Conversion--first ride review

2018-11-10 Thread Bill Lindsay
I forgot the best part of my Albastache ride: one long climb was up Old Tunnel
Road above Oakland. 28 years ago that whole canyon burned in what was called
the Oakland Firestorm. As I was contemplating the changes that had occurred in
the 30 years I’d done this climb. There’s the new house built to look like a
saxophone. There’s the spot where a Specialized Stumpjumper melted in the fire
while locked to a railing. Etcetera.

My mind wandered as I thought about fire policy, climate change and various
veins of scientific thought as well as some technical topics I would need to
discuss with my coworkers once I got to the office. It’s one of the many
reasons I enjoy cycling, particularly uphill and solo. It’s an all too rare
opportunity to daydream and meditate. As I crested the climb and reached to
shift to the big ring I realized that I had completely stopped thinking about
the bike or the new cockpit. It had ‘disappeared’. That’s about as much as I
can ask for from equipment.
