[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-30 Thread Julian Westerhout
My goal for the past five years has been to ride more miles each year on my
singles and our tandem than my wife or I drive in our car (we only own
one). We've been lucky enough to take a multi-week tandem tour 4 of the
past 5 summers. I commute by bike (only live 2.5 miles from work, if I go
straight there), she by bus. Even with at least one major car trip (usually
halfway across the country to visit family) each year that's been doable
for 3 of the past 5 years, and we came closer than I expected the other two
(one with several long road trips and time off the bike for knee surgery
for me, one with time off the bike for shoulder surgery for me).

[RBW] Re: Albastache Conversion--first ride review

2018-11-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
"It is a distinct possibility that I'll freak out my SFR comrades by
running this bike at the December 200k"

Plans CANCELLED. I'm not going to do the SFR 200k tomorrow morning. Not
with the Albastache bike, not with any bike. My son Henry is applying to
both Cal and Stanfurd, and The Big Game, which was originally scheduled for
November 17, was rescheduled for December 1 due to the fires. Henry asked
if he and I could go to Big Game. I cancelled doing to 200k to spend a day
with my son. It's entirely possible that at the 2019 Big Game, Henry could
be on the field. If he goes to Cal, he wants to continue his sousaphone
career. Everyone knows the sousaphones are the STARS of Cal Band. If he
goes to the 'Furd, he might instead continue his trombone career. I know
of no other more notable anti-star than a Stanfurd trombone player. Google
"stanford trombone player" if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I think this is a fair delay for my extended review of the
Albastache handlebar. You all can wait. :)

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-30 Thread Joe Gates
This is a great thread, it is fun to read about everyone's success over this
year! After 2 consecutive years of 3000 miles, I set a goal of 3500 for this
year. I should just make it by year's end. I also wanted to ride at least 90
days (next ride will hit that mark) and climb 200,000 feet (this might be tough
to hit, but I have a month so fingers are crossed). I am not as disciplined as
Bill about bike rotation with one bike usually getting the lion's share of the
miles. However, this year for the first time I have 2 different bikes that
logged 1000 miles. Add in one with over 500 and I would say I did a better job
of spreading the bike love around this year. Unfortunately I did not achieve
one of my goals this year which was to ride the Six Gap Century in North
Georgia. That is a goal every year and this year I was as prepared as I have
ever been. Unfirtunately my 8 year old daughter brought home the stomach bug
the weekend of the ride and it hit me the night before. Oh well, there is
always next year!

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam fixed question

2018-11-30 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, if you really want cog security on a hub without provision for a
reverse-threaded lockring, use red Loctite. I did this with a very nice and
expensive ENO hub. Dura Ace -- so top quality -- cog. When it came time to
remove it, and being ignorant of the need for heat, I tried force: almost
broke my chain whip; then put cog in vise and used wheel as lever. Torqued
hard! Shattered cog into 3 pieces, left little wavy sections in hub threads
(still usable, though.) Even skip braking wouldn't have removed that cog!

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam fixed question

Screw-on track cogs have the same threading as screw-on freewheels. Does
this other side also have a smaller-diameter, reverse-threaded section for
a lockring? If so, the fixed cog ought simply to fit over -- bypass -- that
section and screw on as with a freewheel.

(Note: There's no great danger, IME, to riding a fixed cog without a
lockring, as long as you don't rely on backpressure to brake. I've done so
for thousands of miles.)
