[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2018-12-11 Thread Kowalsky Mist
Thanks Phil!

Yeah, my rim is 20mm on the inside and 27mm on the outside and the tire
measures 50mm. One SV14 blew at around 48 psi, one survived ;) A Michelin
"tank" tube replaced the other.
Unfortunately one tire is a complete banana, very poorly crafted, maybe by an
intern or so. Which gives me also the impression quality control doesn't exist
there. The black center tread is off b about 4 mm on several spots where it's
suppose to connect with the sidewall. All the spots where it doesn't make it to
the sidewall are paper thin, plus the corners of tread is about 1mm thinner
there. Fortunately it looks like I will get a replacement, time consuming but
nonetheless uncomplicated so far, lets see.

Ride wise I'm quite surprised not so positive for now. At 25/30 PSI it's not as
plush as I expected. Not sure if my Gauge on the Turbo Morph is accurate,
didn't compare it yet. According to that pump my Panaracer Ribmos 1.75 where at
18/22 PSI which is way under their recommended PSI, but they where great that
way.

Riding the RTP at 22/26 at the moment, feels better ...but also not
recommneded, but the only real approvement that way.

I was mostly surprised about the different handling/stearing with these tires.
On one side you feel like riding a big boat or an old Cadillac, BUT the
stearing is realy agile, in a weird way. The tire, unless holding the steerer
real stable on straight, the front turns imediatelly and radically, this
multiplies with stuff on your front rack. Did not get used to it yet. I don't
get the physics why, but its a lot more work for the arms and wrists.

Well, we'll see... as many say, you got to find your sweet spot on the pressure
and for now I don't ride it with the little shaky banana tire on the front.

Cheers,
K

It's all about bottom bracket height and seat tube angle. If you're on a
"mountain bike" or a "cyclocross bike", fugettaboutit unless you drop your
seat way too low. If you really want to put a foot down flat, staying on
the saddle, and not lean too far, you'll need a bottom bracket that is
pretty low. It's one of my key criteria for a commuting bike, so that
stoplights are easy to manage. Pedal strikes then become a potential
hazard, but I think I've hit a pedal maybe three times in the last decade,
all turning and going over a bit of a bump at the same time. On my
preferred commuting bikes, I can easily put one foot flat or both feet on
the toes.

Riv says they need at least 20 people to commit to buying a Hubbuh before
they'll be able to justify an order. 25 committed orders would be even
better. They're close; but only 17 folks have committed.

I can't justify one. However -- ever hear of the Blind Tandem Cycling
Association ? Wow...just wow.

How cool would it be for us, as a group, to pool funds enough to add 1 to
the 17 already committed, and donate it to this wonderful organization?
Hubbuh's are $1875 for F/F/H/BB. So, if 25 people put in $75

Anyway, just one way to help a great org, and also help some fellow
Rivsters who missed out on the 1st run. If there is enough interest maybe
Riv could set up a way on rivbike.com (similar to the Hail Mary last year)
to accept funds for this.

[RBW] WTB or Trade: Rear wheel for Roadini

2018-12-11 Thread lambbo
A few months ago Patrick Shea sold me an original SON hub on a 32 spoke mavic
open pro ceramic rim, 32 spoke...it was such a great deal!

BUT, it looks and feels very very funny on my Roadini, given that the rear
wheel is a lightweight low-spoke Mavic Aksium (which also feels too flexy for
my 220lbs).

SO, I'm looking for a 32 (or 36) spoke rear wheel with decent hub 130mm
spacing, 9, 10, or 11 speed, 23mm wide or wider preferable. Open Pro ceramic
would be great to match, but I'm open to anything.

Not looking to spend a great deal of money, but I do want something reliable.

WILLING TO TRADE both Mavic Aksium wheels, which are black, true, and
lightweight, for one great rear wheel.

Thank you Rivbunch!

[RBW] Putting My Foot Down

2018-12-11 Thread Kainalu V.
I often stop in the saddle using my foot as a prop, it's extended but not on
point. My saddle is 12-13cm below my pbh, which feels right to me. Some advice
that may or may not be advisable-
1. Have huge pedal pushers, my size 16 foot makes a good kickstand.
2. Use a longer crank. That'll get your optimized pedal stroke that much closer
to the ground.
3. Lean, slightly
4, Forget the whole prop thing, it's a crutch, master track stands.

[RBW] Re: Putting My Foot Down

2018-12-11 Thread Mark Anderson
On safety bikes like my Riv, I keep my saddle too high to put a foot down
on without dismounting. This is not due to any fantasy-racer tendencies I
may or may not have, but because I would be uncomfortable while riding. My
previously broken knee in particular would complain about putting the
saddle too low. It's no shrinking violet.

OTOH, I have of late lowered my saddle a bit and just put my footsies a bit
further forward on the pedals and been happy, but I cannot nearly flat-foot
at a stop while in the saddle, but I don't mind that. You could, I
presume, easily experiment and find out whether you would be happy with a
much lower saddle by much-lowering your saddle. If it sucks, you'll know.
I have discussed this very matter with a few friends over the years who
simply don't understand why anyone would put their saddle too high to
flat-foot a stop. They're really happy in their biking lives. Maybe you
would be too if you emulated them. However, none of them (and maybe
(hopefully) not you) have broken a knee. I cannot emulate them happily.
 So it goes.

I also have had a couple of recumbents, and one of the great, huge,
wonderful advantages of them is the ability to set the seat (not saddle)
for nicely extended pedaling legs, while still being able to put a flipper
down at a (possibly beer-impulse-related) stop without leaving said seat.
It's pretty great. Interactions with heavy traffic improve greatly
without the delay of getting up on the saddle. I appreciate your

In short, I suggest you just try it and pay attention to your body. If a
low saddle hurts, stop using a low saddle. If you want to, maybe try out a
recumbent to achieve your goal. If it doesn't hurt, have a great time and
enjoy the ride. Even my crappy, (audibly) crunchy knees let me lower my
saddle somewhat. Or hell, just keep your saddle high and enjoy the ride.

Re: [RBW] Putting My Foot Down

2018-12-11 Thread Tim Gavin
Here's a non-Rivendellian solution: a dropper seatpost.

They're popular with MTB types in order to lower the seat while
aggressively riding (in the standing position) and quickly raise it back
once you want to sit down.

You could lower the seat before you stop, and raise it again when you start
going.

However, they aren't cheap. They're kind of a pain to set up (routing the
control cable). And the smallest size is 27.2 (26.8 and you're out of
luck).

I put a KS Lev dropper on my new MTB build (steel frame All-City Electric
Queen, modern components) and I'm still getting the hang of when to use it
(and why).

But I agree wholeheartedly with Grant et al that proper (read, high) saddle
height is very important. I've tried to sit and ride after dropping the
saddle an inch or so, and pedaling just feels so wrong.

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-11 Thread Christopher Cote
I had pretty modest goals for 2018. The only quantitative goal was to ride
enough at Kindgom Trails in Vermont enough to justify the season pass that
I purchased, and I met that goal. Other than that it was to ride as much as
possible and enjoy every ride. I think I pretty much met that goal as well.

For 2019 my goal is to get back to riding as much as I did in 2018. I had
knee surgery at the end of October and it will be several months before I'm
anything close to normal. I'm spending a lot of time on the trainer indoors
this winter, hoping to be able to hit the trails in the spring.

[RBW] Re: Putting My Foot Down

2018-12-11 Thread CMR
I think Rivendell and Grant are actually pretty forward about raising the
seat to the proper height. My first time at Rivendell Grant spent 15
minutes helping me get a proper height on my Mercian, raising it 2-3
centimeters. So not so much a Racer thing as just a fact of riding bikes,
you can't ride comfortably and still put your foot down t easily. Low
bottom brackets help a bunch with this though. I absolutely recommend you
keep the proper leg extension and just hop off the saddle when you need to
put a foot down, or find a curb. I think if you lower it you will be
sacrificing ride comfort in exchange for stop comfort.

Will stopping, dismounting and standing with one foot on the ground,
sort of half-sitting on the top tube with the other leg, cramp you up?
I see people do it, but in my experience keeping your butt on the saddle

2018-12-11 Thread Steve Palincsar
I can't see any other way to achieve "correct" leg extension while still
retaining the ability to put both feet flat on the floor - that is,
after all, the whole point of "crank forward".  Personally, it's not for
me and I don't have the requirement: if I need to put both feet flat on
the ground -- indeed, even just one foot on the ground -- I am going to
stop and dismount.  However, I'm aware there are people for whom it is a
requirement and the crank-forward design lets them do that.

Hey Marty,

The last photo in this post shows, a bit obliquely, leg bend at 6 o’clock.
https://thegrid.ai/withabandon/six-inches-of-fresh-powder-and-a-brisk-day

I’ve ending up lowering by saddle a skosh since going fixed gear ... makes
riding mongolian style easier, given the pedals are always moving. I often
stand at a light, from the saddle, with my foot down, but on the ball of my
foot. I’d need to lean to put my foot flat.

SNAFU today, but to the RBW list. Yes, I'm a doofus. Please substitute
"RBW'er" for "iBOB" in my post and it'll make more sense.

Thanks for your understanding,

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-11 Thread William R.
I agree this is a great thread. Very inspiring. I really like the idea of
throwing goals out there in front of where you are. This year has continued
a downward trajectory in overall mileage for me. I'm currently at 1,840+
miles on the year and I've given myself the goal of getting to 2k. I'm not
too upset about it because I had some very great experiences on the bike
this year. I'm 52 and I have two children, a 10 year old and a 14 yo. I
live in the burbs and commute into the city. It's hard to find the time but
I'm working on it. A general goal is to try to be active as much as
possible. Most days I walk to the train station and from the station to my
office on the other end of the ride (3.5 miles) and the same back home.
Back to the bike, when I was younger, I consistently did 5k+ mileage years
and logged three 7500+ years in my late 30's. As I get older, I envision my
schedule slowly cracking open again as my kids grow up. My goal is to
slowly grow the mileage back up. I would really like to ride more regularly
too. More days where I actually get on the bike. To that end I really like
Jon's 300 days a year goal. In 2019 I am going to try to tweak my schedule
and get out there more on a daily basis even if it's for just a half hour
or 45 minutes of hill climbing in the winter. Good luck to all with their
goals. There are a lot of good ones here!

Lots depending on the flavor of bob-sh you're looking for.

   - Harris Cyclery (Newton) is your pure bob-ish experience - sells and
stocks Rivs, Gunnars, dynamo stuff, lots of Brooks bits.
   - Broadway Bicycle (Cambridge) school is your new-school Surly, Crust,
   worker-owned bob-ish shop
   - Cambridge Cycles (Cambridge) is another formerly fixie/messenger
   culture-focused turned Crust and bike-packing bob-ish shop
   - Somervelo (Somerville) is your black-metal tinged custom bike bob-ish
   shop

Quite a spectrum - moving from most to least bob-ish from top to bottom in
my estimation.

I'll be in Boston this weekend myself, but with kid in-tow. I don't expect
to make it to any shops, but you never know. Enjoy!

Capacity
Not bulged (imagine): 1700 cubic inches, or 27.8 liters (the British way)
Bulged but not ridiculous: 1984 cubic inches, or 32.5 liters

The great thing about this bag is you can think “outside the bag”, so you can

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

The tires are made by Panaracer, and these tires are made by hand - which
may explain why there is a slight difference in weight, yet crafted very
carefully.

The RTPs are some of my favorite tires, if only they made more bikes that
fit them. I would get the SC 14s, as the tires on 23mm outside width rims
measure around 50mm.

[RBW] Re: Canti-Chev?

2018-12-11 Thread lambbo
Oh, forgot to update the group!

Our experiment is on - more experimental than intended, I ordered non-offset
posts and Kai pointed out, when I dropped everything off at his studio, that
they are supposed to be offset.
So I think Kai is going to try to improvise with some files, which seems extra
fun to me.

We'll keep you posted! pun intended

I found a rack! I didn't think I would, but am very happy to have found a
used one. Thank you Cam and others that replied.
