I've used toe straps on my Carradice for more adjustability, but those are
still leather.

The non-Irish version of Riv's Irish straps are called Coghlan's Arno
straps, and they're handy for stuff like this. You can loop 'em through the
buckle twice for extra meat.

I think you're a Westsider now? Adventure16 has 'em.

[RBW] Re: Ultra Romance and his Rivendell Atlantis.

2019-01-09 Thread Tim Bantham
The two Rivendell models that I most covet are the Atlantis and the
Hunqapillar. When I was considered buying my first Riv I found a review on
the Atlantis that Benedict had done along with Bikepacking.com. For those
who may remember this spread it featured photos of him making coffee
outside alongside this gorgeous Atlantis. My exposure to that review really
finally convinced me to sell off my carbon unitasker bikes in favor of a
lugged steel bag toting machine that could carry me and my stuff off into
the wilderness. I balked at the price of a MUSA Atlantis and decided on a
complete Sam as my gateway into Riv. I have since purchased a Appaloosa as
my second Riv to serve as my touring rig. I love the Appaloosa but
sometimes wish I waited just a little longer until the MIT Atlantis became
available. It wouldn't make any sense for me to replace my Appaloosa with
the Atlantis now because they do exactly the same thing. I have nothing
against 2TT's but I do like the appearance of the truss style 2TT on the
Atlantis slightly better than the Joe. I am hoping that Rivendell also
decides to do a MIT Hunq at some point.

[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2019-01-09 Thread Tim Bantham
Just a quick update on my saddle exploits. I borrowed a C17 carved from a
friend and I can say without a doubt that I like it better than the regular
C17. The difference in the amount of "give" is noticeable but I am not yet
convinced that this is the one. What I don't like about it is that I can
feel its width if that makes sense. I think I just need something narrower.
I have a Charge Spoon that I was able to pick up new for less than $30. I
am going to try that one next. If that doesn't work I am going to try the
C15 carved.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Noodle vs. Dirt Drop vs. B135 Randonneur - switching to drop bars with flare

2019-01-09 Thread Pancake
Agreed, it's very detailed for current models (including the B177, B132,
B135) but not for older or proprietary bars (like the RM-013 or Maes
Parallel). It includes the angle of the drop, but not the flare out like
the difference between the width of the flats and the bottom of the flats
vs. the width of the flats and the width of the bar ends, I suppose with
some geometry calculations we could sort it though. That was interesting to
read though a bit, thanks Jeff!

The article was pretty good, but here's how they break down for me.
#1 C-17 carved
#2 C-17 All weather
#3 broken in B-17
#4 regular C-17
#5 regular C-19
#6 B-72

This list is most of the Brooks saddles I have spent considerable time with. I
haven't tried the B-17 with the slot or the carved C-19, but I would expect
they would slot into the upper middle & middle respectively.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Noodle vs. Dirt Drop vs. B135 Randonneur - switching to drop bars with flare

2019-01-09 Thread Pancake
Good point John, when I bought the B135 that was part of the difference that
appealed to me. However, after putting about 800 miles on the B135 bars, I can
tell they’re just not wide enough for me. So my research on the distinctions
between the B135 and B132 didn’t get very deep, instead I focused on wider bars
like the Noodle, but I also wanted more flare out because my forearms bounce
off the upper parts of the bars when getting off pavement a little and pulling
on the drops. The dirt drops seem to be a perfect happy medium for geometry
that I’m after and with that I want, but I’ve been very surprised to see how
many similar bars Nitto makes for so many different companies.

Those Compass Maes Parallel bars are a great example, very fine differences
made for a specific company in a niche market. 46cm maximum width though, so
not quite as wide as I was after.

It seems a shame there’s not a resource with off of Nitto’s bar specifications
in one place - it’s be great to see all that info at the same place rather than
sorting through a dozen websites (which often have conflicting info or only
info for one size).

Fantastically wide and could be fun on a different project - the Towel Rack
from Crust in 615mm, 645mm, or 675mm! I really like their discussion of “wide”
bars that just aren’t that wide:

“Flash ahead to the normalized MTB world of 50mm stems and 800mm handlebars
that we live in today. Why do they get to be so verily comfortable while our
slumped, pigeon chested bodies are negated to 38-46mm “wide” bars??? WH
I don’t know, so that’s why we made these.”

Any other variations or distinctions worth mentioning please do, also if there
are other 46cm or wider bars with some flare out please add to my list!

Related my RM-013 52cm bars arrive today :-)

Patrick
