Ah! That last detail may establish the identity, since mine has horizontal
rear dropouts (which is a pain when fendering the bike).

Thank you!

That’s a beautiful bike!

My recollection is that the original three models, Road, A/R, and D/M, were
modeled after the Bridgestone RB, XO, and MB models, respectively, in terms of
geometry and tubing selection. My D/M is definitely “stout”, has very little BB
drop, a lot of top tube rise, lots of tire clearance (though I wish it had a
bit more for fender clearance), high trail front end. And, in stark contrast to
the direction Grant has gone since those early days, it has what Riv might now
consider comically short chain stays.

One detail difference is that my D/M has vertical rear dropouts, while most
A/Rs I think used horizontals.

2019-03-31 Thread Christopher Cote
All this discussion around the GBW, plus my recent interest in older 26"
wheel bikes (a lugged Trek 930 and now an Atlantis) reminded me of the
mountain bike listed in the early Riv catalogs and Readers. In RR #3, Grant
talks about the mountain bike, including a "D/M model" that that is
designed around dirt drops with a 50mm longer headtube, and presumably a
sloping top tube (maybe just an extended head tube above the TT?). My
question is, were any of these made? Any pics online of these beasts?

1. Nitto R14 Top Rack - Hoop Version - nice condition, including a pair of
longer then needs struts for top attachment, so should work on just about
most frames - $100

2. Nitto Campee 27F Front Rack - lower attachments shortened to fit on top
fork end eyelets, best fit for 26"/650b wheels, fit nicely on a 45cm Clem,
very short struts included for mid/upper fork attachment and another set
for cantilever stud attachments - $180

3. 26" Wheelset - older, possibly Riv-sanctioned wheelset due to mismatched
hubs, Mustang rims, rear asymmetric, 32h, rear hub: Shimano Deore Parallax,
135mm, front hub: Suntour Cyclone (?) hub, rim width around 22/23mm, no
skewers - $75

4. 700c/29" Wheelset - 36h, Shimano RS400 hubs, Sun Rhyno Lite silver rims
- I built these up as a second wheelset for my Clem, but used them
minimally and am just sticking with one wheelset and swapping tires
seasonally - $100

5. Yepp Mini Front Baby Carrier - black, used for a couple kids who are
getting bigger and have moved on to rear mounted seats - $70

6. Brooks B17 Saddle - brown, used for 10 miles at most, looks close to new
aside from the rails - $80

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB 61 Atlantis - Toyo or Waterford

2019-03-31 Thread tom coppedge
Thanks, Hugh, but looking for an older one, per subject line - Toyo or
Waterford :-) You're right, though, if I were looking for the MIT
Atlantis, the Joe might work if smaller sizes were in stock, since I'm
looking for more standover than my 64 Toyo Atlantis.

If a LWB one will do, given the interchangeability of the LWB Atlantis and
the Appaloosa, you could grab a 62 Joe from the web specials section of the

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights

2019-03-31 Thread John McBurney
I somewhat misadvisably decided to open the light to see whether it even
was an LED or incandescent. It has a single LED. The lens is truly
impressive but devishly difficult to get back in with the correct
orientation. Right now it’s together but the lens is vertical. I think it
projected down and was effective enough before I flipped it upside down.
That was partly aesthetic and partly because at the end of a big old Nitto
Campee rack it was getting the crap beat of it and I had to retap the
housing to m4 to keep it on the mount. Flipped it was doomed with the first
rain but a little out of harms way.

I remain impressed - awed- by the depth of knowledge in this group. 
Namaste.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights

2019-03-31 Thread Peter White
The Supernova Triple and the early E3 headlights were just round beams, not
well suited for use in traffic. But starting around 2008 or so they began
to offer the E3 in a "low beam" version. That's when I started importing
them. The Triple is a fine headlight for riding single track. The original
E3 wasn't much good for anything, as the beam was narrow, far too narrow
for use on single track. So the OP's E3 may or may not have a round beam.
If it does, it's best he replace it with a modern headlight. If it has a
"low beam" design, the only advantage to replacing it with the current E3
would be that they are a fair bit brighter. But for relatively flat roads
in an urban setting, the older "low beam" type is a fine headlight. I'd
just keep using it.

If he does decide to replace it, the Supernova taillights from that time
are compatible with modern Supernova headlights. But not with anything
else. So if you opt for any other brand of headlight, you'll need to
replace the taillight as well.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights

2019-03-31 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
The only quibble I would have with the Supernova is that it has what I would
call an “American” beam pattern, which is basically a cone of light that shines
equally up, down, and side to side. All of the quality lights out of Europe
(think Edeluxe) have a cutoff pattern that shines down on the road and to the
sides, but not up (like the headlights on your car). A lot of the power of the
Supernova is wasted shining up to the sky (and into the eyes of oncoming
motorists and cyclists).

A friend has one, though, and likes it. He’s fond of the feature that turns the
three LEDs on in sequence as your speed increases.

I have Edeluxe on four bikes, IQ-X on two. All work very well—light years (pun
intended) better than the incandescent headlight I used for randonneuring and
PBP in 2007.
