Shoot, half the new cars for sale now have lane-wandering warnings and brakes
that automatically stop you if a car ahead stops. This stuff is many
generations ahead of your old Volvo.

Re: [RBW] Grant’s Hillybike Concept Attempts to Restore Balance to the Speed of Humanity

2019-04-07 Thread Eric Daume
Of course, a new car with stability control probably wouldn’t have spun out
in this case. And if it did roll, it would have airbags and likely a
stronger structure. But this seems to be getting pretty far off the GBW.

I concur with S about the Mavic A319's. They come in silver and I my

You might look at the H Plus Son TB14. Last year I had black mountain cycles
build a set of wheels for a one speed using Phil high flange hubs (with

you like a traditional look, and aren’t going tubeless, they seem like a great
choice.

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish bike shop in Ann Arbor?

2019-04-07 Thread Jack K
The "Ann Arbor Classic Bicycle Show" is actually in Saline and used to be
named that, I've been to it many times when it had the old name. It is a
big show/swap and I was always happy I went, but ... When they say
"classic" they mean more classic (i.e. vintage) than most Riv-folk are
focused on. They're be lots of Whizzers, 40's & 50's balloon tire bikes,
banana seat & ape hanger barred "Krate" bikes and a show of custom
"lowrider" bikes, with a random smattering of "lightweight" drop bar bikes
and goods for them. I've been to far smaller show/swaps that held far more
interest for me, but it obviously depends on your cycling interests ...

[RBW] Wheel question

2019-04-07 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Carla! Velocity’s Quill, which descends from their A23, looks like a great
choice. I roce the A23 on my QB before I shifted to the Altas when I shifted to
fixed (new hub, new wheel). The A23 handled everything I through its way with
aplumb, and I’m 200 pounds of engine and rode it on rocky, rooty singletrack
and dirt/gravel roads. It is a great balance of strong and light (whereas the
Atlas leans to the strong instead of light). And at 20mm inside width, it will
handly wider country bike tires beautifully. I hope that helps.
http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/quill-622

Other considerations: handbuilt, in my experience, makes a huge difference and
is well worth the expense (I’ve never gone out of true or popped a spoke on
handbuilts riding more technical stuff than I did when I popped spokes and bent
factory-built rims); 32 spoke if you are light and/or ride light, 36 if you
don’t want to worry about it and the few oz. are no big deal.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Not a Riv but Heavily Influenced by Riv

2019-04-07 Thread in Dallas nick
A good Sunday morning to all.

I had a Riv but I do not have one now.

I bought one 5 years from their beginning in 1999, a custom road model in a
beautiful blue with contrasting white head tube.

I didn't know much at all about bike mechanics at the time and after gathering
the parts paid a mechanic to build it up.

Since then I've accumulated the tools and learned to completely disassemble a
bike and build it back up to my preferences,

a process I thoroughly enjoy.

I enjoyed it a lot for a number of years before regretfully selling it.

I still read most everything from Riv as well as this list and have learned
much over those 20 years since 1999.

After a phase of 'lighter and faster' attempts

with a multitude of  bikes I decided

practical, comfortable and more stable bikes were my preference.

Bikes like Riv offers and

of course lugged steel is preferred.

The aesthetic as well as the ride of lugged steel just does it for me.

I've had a good many bikes come and go in my stable over these 20 years and
some non lugged ones ride very nicely.

However when stopping along the ride and looking at my bike, perhaps snapping a
pic,

the aesthetics come into play and I Iove the look of a nicely crafted lugged
steel  frame.

I like this list and the overall vibe, civility,  helpfulness,  even kindness
this list shows

nearly all the time with very few exceptions.

I hope a Riv is in my not too distant future,

a new Atlantis frame when budget allows.

We will see.

In the meantime here is a pic of my attempt at a comfortable  and stable Riv
like machine,

a 1986 Schwinn  Passage which was a touring model not a lot different from a
Schwinn Voyageur.

Paul  in Dallas

If any make it to Dallas and schedules permit

I'd be happy to take you on a bike tour of the downtown area.

Reid,

I have a few shorter nitto stems if you're interested. Maybe a pair of
pedals or two. Send me a DM and I can look through the part bin.

I am emailing with another individual about selling the Ram and I suggested
$1200 minus the handlebar bag/rack combo. I've seen Rams for sale from 1000
to 2000+ depending on build, condition/wear & tear, etc. If things falls
through with the interested individual I will post some photos and list it
for sale.

Thanks,
