Stephen, what is this Ma’am stuff?!? 

I’ve tried most of the dealers, but not the few that either don’t have a

Our preference is absolutely to give the dealers the business. So if a dealer

2019-04-24 Thread ascpgh
Tom Teesdale made mine too. It had me in just too much of a Superman posture
that was not a good starting place if much dynamic riding was dictated by the
trail.

A neutral riding stance seems so much better to move from in any direction as
needed and geometry with a stable climbing behavior instead of feeling like you
are at a continuous tipping point. The quivering forearms and sense that not a
single round pedal stroke had occurred throughout most climbing efforts
discouraged me after collecting and assembling the bike.

Your wonderfully natural climbing on your new bike was easily recognized by me!

I have a skerton and the glass jar is very thick glass and it is overall,
pretty heavy duty.

I rarely use my Aeropress so I don't know what size grind you will be
shooting for, but the Skerton does a good job for finer grinds. It's not
so good for courser grinds, like French Press.

[RBW] Long shot: 52 Clem L in Butternut

2019-04-24 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Today marks the first day it was warm enough in Mnpls for my sister to do her 7
mile bike commute. She stole her husband’s Clem L in 59 cm as he wasn’t riding
it today and it is significantly nicer than her old red Birea. She was nervous
about being late for work today and nearly talked herself out of biking, but
for whatever reason, she slammed the saddle and took off down her unfairly
gorgeous bike superhighway. She called me mid-ride screeching with joy. She was
effortlessly flying down the road, eating up the miles and was, for the first
time ever, FAST. She was just delighted and when she was done raving to me, she
informed her husband she would be the one riding his bike to work now. He
objected but encouraged her to purchase her own Rivendell Clem L.

You guys. I have checked everywhere and RBW and their dealers are OUT of 52s.
718 initially told us they had a Butternut in 52, but alas, turns out it was
the Clem H. Butternut is her absolute favorite color. Which brings me to this.

Does anyone have a like-new butternut 52 Clem L that they might part with?
She’s a little skittish about buying used and trusting someone with this much
cash, but I think you’re good folks. If not, she’ll probably get one later this
summer in whatever color is offered. But July is a long time to wait.

Thanks!
Leah

Admittedly, I didn't set mine up, the LBS did - but unlike some other

just put the cable through the hole and fasten it. And, of course,
although the rollers come with the brakes they're not required, you can

Hey Reid, I gave the builder the forks specs ( of the older Joe App, I
believe V2 has a slightly beefier fork) and he said it was ok.

Jeff, Walt from Waltworks did the mods. Awesome to deal with. $150 total
for front/ rear tabs. I did not have the canti studs removed, also no cable
guides added. This would’ve increased price by a little. I just used the
canti posts/ rack brazeons and some zip ties to keep housing in place. Works
pretty good. I’ll post some pics when I get a chance. To my eye, the
discs don’t seem out of place at all on the Joe and I prefer them for the

Re: [RBW] What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-24 Thread Friend
The Portland problem is so real, and the Spring Water Corridor can be super
sketchy. I almost got jumped there once. My brother and I parked our
bikes by the MODA Center for a few hours one evening. We knew it was
sketchy. We brought every lock we had and had our wheels, frames, seats,
all secure to eacht others bike and to the rack. We come back to find my
brother grips were stolen...

The biggest suggestion I have for bike security is, unfortunately, don't
lock up your rivendel on the sidewalk. That's why I am keeping my 1999
spray painted Trek 520. One more thing. Put ball bearings in all your
allen wrench bolts. Smear them in there with wax. They are hard to get
out without melting the wax.

Hey Andy! I searched and found this, so I had an idea of what a Kona Hot is:
http://cog.konaworld.com/tag/kona-hot/

Interestingly, it doesn't look as snug in the geometry as many bikes I see.
Fascinating that it rode so poorly on the inclines. Of course, my eye for
geometry is doubtless poor. Grin.

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-24 Thread masmojo
The old barrel key locks are easily defeated with the barrel of a Bic pen.
Fortunately, you don't see the pens that were ideally suited for that much
anymore & really who even uses pens very much nowadays anyway? So in reality
these locks are probably safer than they were 20 years ago.

I believe a multipronged approach to locking is best. I use the biggest
beefyest lock I can conjure at work and leave it permanently locked to the
rack. For day to day errands I use either a middle weight Kryptonite chain or
the Abus folding link thingy. Those are both middle security locks & will deter
all but the "serious" bike thief.
For my bikes that are not "thief bait" or if I am just popping in & out of
somewhere. I'll sometimes use a coiling cable lock (although these just keep
someone from jumping on the bike & riding off & are easily defeated with bolt
cutters (which is how I lost my Rosco)) or a little Odessey light weight U lock
I recently got.
Horses for the courses as they say.

[RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-24 Thread DarinM
This is a good take. I'm weary of any claim that a given high quality
cantilever brake is objectively better than the rest. Of the high quality
options, pick one that fits your frame requirements, aesthetics, and/or
mechanical aptitude. Even the lower quality ones can be coaxed to work well
enough.

I avoided smooth post type for a while but came into a nice set for very
cheap that fit my builds aesthetics (Shimano M373). I've figured out how to
set them up properly and now they work as well or better than any other
model I've used.

[RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-24 Thread John Phillips
If you choose to use a Kryptonite U-lock, be sure to read the
maintenance info. IIRC, Kryptonite recommends using a chain lube containing
silicon, Teflon or graphite to prevent corrosion and/or rust. I've read
complaints from commuters whose locks failed in a month because their bikes
were locked up outside in wet weather.

>From the Kryptonite FAQ manual from the FAQ page:

   1.

   CARE & MAINTENANCE

Lubricate the lock several times a year to keep the lock in its best
working condition. Always use a lubricant that has only a silicone,
graphite orTeflon base. Face the lock cylinder upright and spray or pour
the lubricant into the cylinder. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Place a rag on
the workstation and turn the lock over onto the rag for a few minutes.

Note: Do not use WD-40! WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant and will
   remove lubricant in the cylinder.

   I use 2 - Abus 540 U-locks around town, or Tigr Mini+'s if I'm a few
feet away getting a sandwich or coffee, but after seeing that video of 24"
bolt cutters making short work of a Tigr Mini, I doubt I'll use them again.

[RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-24 Thread Lynn Haas
I didn't know those barrel-key locks were even around anymore! Be aware
that combination cable locks are also super easy to open. Any lock can be
defeated with the right tools and a little time. I've heard it said that
the easiest way to steal a bike is to go in broad daylight with an orange
safety vest and power tools.

When we bought our first house 10 years ago, a previous resident had left a
barrel-key U-lock locked up to a patio rail. Our real estate agent kept
making a big deal about the seller removing the lock before we closed on
the house. She couldn't believe me when I said not to worry, I would deal
with it.

The best lock is on the front door. I have arranged inside parking at every
job I've ever had, and at university I was able to rent a bike locker for
$60/year. Bike lockers are marvelous.

For outside parking, I use a modern flat-key U-lock (I own a Kryptonite but
I usually use an OnGuard borrowed from work because it's about 2 pounds
lighter) and a keyed cable lock for the wheels. I once came back to my bike
to find the cable lock cut 1/2 way through. I guess the would-be thief got
that far, saw the U-lock, and moved on to the next bike.

I tried a TIGR Mini. It was phenomenally light in weight and seemed very
secure, but it was too small to easily fit around my wheel or frame + most
bike racks. I think that it would be OK for a skinny road bike.

Good technique is important. Make sure you lock the frame and not just one
wheel. It's ridiculously easy to release a front wheel, take the unlocked
frame, grab an unlocked front wheel off of another bike, assemble the two,
and ride away. Lots of fun to demo for a crowd, too. If you set it up right
it only takes about 30 seconds.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hand-Cranked Coffee Grinder Recommendation

2019-04-24 Thread Sean McAtee
Thanks again for all of your comments. After doing way more research than
seems necessary, I [think] that I have decided to purchase a Hario Skerton
- Pro model. This seems to offer the best combination of performance and
durability at a cost that seems fairly reasonable. It is a bit larger than
the Porlex. However, it is not so large that I cannot carry it with me on
a bicycle camping trip. I also feel fairly confident that the glass on the
Hario grinder is thick enough that durability will not be a problem.

There's another lock/chain combo called the Hiplok - the chain
integrates a plastic clip so that you can wear the chain/padlock
combo as a belt. It's not uncomfortable for me. But it's heavy. I
bring it sometimes when I don't know what the lockable situation

If you are taking about the round keys from Kryptonite, they were phased
out well over a decade ago and even then, not all were opened easily. I
could never open the three I owned at the time using the pen method.Take
your mechanics advice with a grain of salt. Kryptonite and ABUS are the two
leading companies for bike locks and they are for a reason.

The Lock Picking Lawyer has a YouTube channel where he just picks locks. I
watch these because of the entertainment value but he is very good at what
he does. Have a look at the lock he chooses for his own bicycle. More
importantly listen to why he chose that particular lock.

[RBW] Re: King's Crown on Easter Morn

2019-04-24 Thread ascpgh
Complete opposite of a Kona Hot I built for myself BITD. It seemed like an
assertive road racer’s take on an off road bike, optimizing rider position for
long high output pedaling but not for terrain of much challenge.

That bike was tippy fore and aft on climbs out of the saddle like those you
describe and show yourself riding seated. I’d not had an off road bike that was
so oddly challenging at trail riding and it (and a couple of moves) snuffed my
interest for a good while. Trail riding shouldn’t be as hard as that bike made
it.

Selling that thing to a loving buyer funded my Rambouillet, which is a better
trail bike than most late NORBA geometry MTBs.
