Re: [RBW] It is summer: updated sandal discussion?

2019-06-07 Thread Jonathan D.
I second the Bedrock and Keen CNX. The bedrocks feel more like barefoot and
are really comfortable. They are light and feel like flip flops without the
flop. Chicos feel like bricks in comparison to me. Chico’s also have a big
arch which doesn’t work for me. If you like an arch I would get Chacos. Chaco
also makes great flip flops.

The Keen CNX are just half the weight of the Newport and are great.

I ordered the final Legolas and got mine with downtube shifter bosses,
front and rear rack mounts (for light loads), rear canti cable stop and
brazed on fender mounts at the bridge and chainstays. I am not sure they
will ever get used since it is meant to be my light road bike but I like to
have options for the future. It was delivered to the painter this week. It
will be the same color as the Rivendell Redwood but with cream accents.
Looking forward to it.

[RBW] FS: MUSA bottoms in XL (shorts/knickers)

2019-06-07 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello List of Riv-

I've got a couple of MUSA bottoms that I don't need/use anymore. Both are
functional, but neither are new looking. Maybe you can use them?

   - MUSA shorts, grey, XL: These are in the best shape, but show a bit of
abrasion/wear, there's a few spots of discoloration as well. *$25
   shipped*
   - MUSA knickers, butternut, XL: I've had them for about seven years (and
bought them used from someone else on this list.) These are the velcro
strap version at the thighs. I won't sugarcoat it, these things have seen a
lot of use. Patches, stitches, missing buttons, abrasions/holes, and that
butternut color is definitely well aged. But still perfectly functional,
esp. if you want to make some more repairs to them. *$10 shipped*
   - Get both the shorts and knickers together for *$30*

I can take payment via PayPal. Please direct message me if you are
interested.

It is the large Wald from Rivendell! I used to load that basket exclusively
because I had a kid on a trail-a-bike on back. The bike performed nobly, never
wavering while carrying a heavy front load. I even used to put my dog in that
basket, before his back got bad. Now I have both ends loaded - and it still
handles like a dream. During the school year I haul all the boys’ computers and
instruments and such in Backabike bags and this Wald. I kind of prefer a front
load, honestly. Just feels bottom heavy, or like an anchor if I just carry
weight in the back versus the front, you know? You need never carry a thing on
your back again, Jeff. Your Betz has got this.

Enjoy and welcome to the club!

Way to go Bill, and thank you very much.
I was really glad when I saw the Roadinis were going to have dt bosses and my
wife’s Roadini has dt shifters. I’ve got dt shifters on my drop bar AHH, and Im
using a dt front shifter on my bulmoose bar Bombadil.
Guess I’m that 1.037 in 1,000,000 user.
The way I look at it you can always use the dt cable stop adapters to get in
line cable adjusters for brifters or bar ends, but you can’t put dt shifters on
cable stops.

2019-06-07 Thread Patrick Moore
*Roadeos don't have DT shifter bosses for two reasons. Firstly, the Roadeo
was designed to be as light as possible and still meet Grant's requirements
for strength and durability (I guess cable stop braze ons are lighter than
DT shifter bosses) *

I expect that the reason is rather that cable stop braze ons are more
aerodynamic, right?

Kidding of course. But Grant being Grant, I doubt weight was the reason.
But I have no idea what it was, unless it was simply taking for granted
that only 1.037 owners out of 1,000,000 (approx.) use dt shifters nowadays.

But: it is good to know that they can be ordered, along with a chain
hangar. I've had these added to both my remaining Riv Road customs. (Mine
are little "L"-shaped hooks, since these bikes are fixed gears without
derailleurs: the hook slots through a link to hold the chain off the
ambient sand when removing the wheel.

[RBW] Re: New-to-me: 59cm Roadeo

2019-06-07 Thread Paul G
Roadeos don't have DT shifter bosses for two reasons. Firstly, the Roadeo
was designed to be as light as possible and still meet Grant's requirements
for strength and durability (I guess cable stop braze ons are lighter than
DT shifter bosses) and, secondly, since the bike is an alternative to
Modern Carbon fiber Road Bikes, it was presumed that most buyers would use
integrated brake/shifters. Or bar end shifters.

I, like you, wasn't satisfied with that so I ordered mine with DT shifter
bosses which was a $50 add on. Since Roadeos are built to order, there's
opportunity to do this sort of thing. I also had a chain hanger peg added
to the right chain stay (an additional $50) to keep the chain under tension
when the rear wheel is removed. That comes in handy when putting the bike
in the car with the wheels off.

I bet fork eyelet braze ons for a front rack wouldn't be out of the
question either. Indeed, there was a Roadeo shown on the BLUG in the past
with such braze ons.

Re: [RBW] RD compatible with index shifters?

Hi Bill--

It's at my LBS now and so I forwarded your directions to the owner/mech
there who is my friend. So we'll see pretty soon. If it's broken, I think
I'll replace it with a 9 speed trigger shifter and be done with BES on this
bike, which is a recent Sam build.

Re: [RBW] RD compatible with index shifters?

2019-06-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
Did you fix it? Are you determined to try to fix it yourself, or do you
want to remove it and send it to me?

If you are determined to fix it yourself, then I'll try to describe what
I'd do to fix it.

1. Shifter is installed on the pod
2. Push the shift lever all the way down
3. remove the shifter, but leave the chrome washer on the pod
4. What position is the chrome washer in? Is it in the right position,
with the key(bump) pointed DOWN? Is it rotated 90 degrees clockwise? Is
it rotated 180 degrees? Is it rotated 270 degrees clockwise?
5. If it is in the right position, reinstall the shifter and use it. If
it has the right number of clicks, you're done and it works. If it doesn't
have the right amount of clicks, it's broken. Throw it away.
6. If it is in the wrong position in step 4, rotate the chrome washer 90
degrees counter-clockwise and return to step 1.

That's it.

Re: [RBW] It is summer: updated sandal discussion?

2019-06-07 Thread Fullylugged
Like Jeff, I have both the leather and nylon versions of the Keen sandal. Like
them both on rides under 25 miles. For longer rides or hilly ones where I ill
be pushing hard on the pedals, I use Keen Cycling sandals. These have a firm
cycling sole and accept cleats if you clip in. I have ad cleats in and out of
mine, and have decided on none as my best option. The hard sole protects my
mid-foot muscles from cramping on super hard efforts up steep climbs or fatigue
over long distance. They have a narrow heel to avoid pedal rub. All the sandals
are nice in rain as they allow water to escape so you don't get squishy feet.
