My current not-a-hubbuh tandem has the GravelKing 48s on it, running tubes
with tubeless sealant. This bike probably sees at least 75% of its mileage
on dirt roads in goathead country. I have not had a single flat or cut in
the past year.

The upcoming Hubbuh is going to run 60mm Schwalbe G-One Speeds tubeless.
This tire only comes in blackwall, but there's a 50mm non-tubeless version
available in tanwall.

WTB has a 50mm version of the Venture coming out, and there's a tubeless
tanwall version.

Similar but slightly skinnier is the 47mm Teravail Cannonball, which is
available in tubeless tanwall version too.

Re: [RBW] SRAM quick link release, g-r-r-r-r-r

2019-06-11 Thread Patrick Moore
George: Was this a 10-speed or narrower chain? I have consistently over the
years had no problems releasing SRAM masterlinks with delicate use of my
fingers. KMC and others, problems, yes, but SRAM masterlinks just supinely
fall apart under my hands, even on dirty chains (tho' I do use dry lubes
or, now, wax).

It was only with 10-speed chains that I needed a masterlink pliers, and I
read that 10 speed chains *are not designed to release without pliers,*
unlike 9 and earlier ones.

Another route is to use whipperman chains whose connex quick links are easily
worked without a tool. I’ve heard kmc are good too but have not used those.

My go to when I was a mechanic and when I'm at home. I view trying to
release them by hand as an emergency-only option, for when you're on the
side of the road with a busted derailleur or similar.

In my experience, the 8 and 9 speed ones were easier to open by hand, the
10 and 11's pretty much needed the pliers. 12 speed was coming in just as I
stopped wrenching so no first-hand experience.

[RBW] Clicking over the odometer

2019-06-11 Thread Fullylugged

Got a 20 mile club ride at 6 tonight. When I logged in to Bikejournal.com
to see how many miles were on each bike (to decide which to take), I saw
the total to date for this one: It's really been a good solid, dependable,
comfortable bike. Most miles were with Nitto noddles but the mustache has
been fine too. If you see a Ram in your size come up for sale, consider it.
The whole run of 3 colors (orange, blue, green) only totaled about 1,300 so
there aren't a ton of them out there. The 50 & 52 only came in blue and
hhave 26" wheels. The rest are 700 (or 650B if you decide to convert). As
delivered they go up to 38mm on tires. Converted to 650B you can go fatter.
So this one will pass 15K. Probably has since I don't log little spins in
the neighborhood or for fast food.

[RBW] Re: Another Rivendell Tenet Set to Hit the Mainstream?

2019-06-11 Thread William deRosset
Hi, All,

I forgot to add: that said, I ran to work this morning in a wool t-shirt,
socks, and underwear. My work togs all week include hard-finish wool overshirts
and wool slacks, which get washed maybe three times a year.

And the wash fills up with the odd cotton bits long before the wool knits
pick themselves up and wander off of the "worn, but not yet dirty" pile to the
wash basket.

Synthetics last effectively forever, and smell of, well, me, after a few
hours's use. Even the silver-treated "antibacterial" ones.

Wool is a good material.

[RBW] Re: Another Rivendell Tenet Set to Hit the Mainstream?

2019-06-11 Thread William deRosset
Dear John,

The short answer is yes, wool is more expensive. It also is harder to work with
than most synthetics in my amateur experience.

It is harder to source if you care about getting the knit/weave just so.
Critters eat it. It felts unless chemically treated. It shrinks. You can't
easily print giant logos on it.

It is worth it, though. And washing wool on the gentle cycle in cold water is
just fine, as long as the garment can be reblocked and didn't require a lot of
hand fitting work (good hand-tailored suits will likely require reconstruction
if washed vs an engineered fit suit).

Cheers,

Will

[RBW] Re: Seeking Rivendell owner in Austin, TX

2019-06-11 Thread Reid Echols
Hi Matthew,

If you came to coffee outside (follow @coffeoutsideatx on instagram for
times and places) on a Friday morning, odds are you'd meet someone with a
59 Clem. I'm often there with my 62 Appaloosa, and there are a few other
Riv riders who attend fairly regularly. Having ridden the 59 Clem here in
town (and owned a 65 Clem for a while), I'd imagine the fit will be just
fine. I'm 6 ' 4" and the 65 Clem was on the big side.

Hope to see you out there sometime,

Reid in Austin

Hey there -

I just double-tapped when I should have paused and managed to dump several
posts which were in the moderation queue from the weekend. If you posted
something in the last few days (there were a few FS/WTB listings) and it
has not shown up in the group feed, then you should likely repost.

Sorry about that folks - been editing audio for the past few days and my
mouse hand is a little trigger-happy...

Back to your regularly scheduled distractions...

Hi everyone,
I'm looking to purchase a Clem Smith JR. complete in the near future and am

willing to let me test ride. I am 6'3" and assume the 59cm model would fit

Hello Patrick,

No harm, no foul. Of course I can be and am open to the conversation. It
struck me as putting microscope on something that for me seemed to separate
rather than bring together. Not you doing that necessarily but the article
focused on the club's blackness.

I prefer the lens to use being this simple sentence from the article:

“We were just a bunch of guys who knew one another and we started riding,”

2019-06-11 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
It just seems to me wool priced it itself out of contention since the mid
1980's. The synthetics seem to be just as good, wash easily (don't use Cl
beach) and cotton is everywhere. Just a simple observation over the years.

A few folks in the local club came back from 2 weeks in Scotland and was
amazed at the number of sheep everywhere, but saying the local complained
the wool was not in demand. Are the production costs to gather the wool
extremely high compared to other fabrics?

Re: [RBW] Re: Black cyclists

2019-06-11 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
These kinds of discussions confuse race with culture. The purported
paucity of black cyclists is a cultural phenomenon, not a racial
phenomenon. Race is genetic and affects physical characteristics, culture
is learned. We're not born cyclists, we have to learn it.

So there aren't many black cyclists---so what? It's not their thing. They
have other things. Their things aren't my things, and they're not trying
to get me involved in their things because they're their things and they
don't care that they're not my things, too. Sociology PhD's working for
universities can get grant money to study these kinds of disparities and
publish the results and we can all read 'em with interest, but it doesn't
change the fact that different cultures gravitate to different things, and
there's nothing wrong with it. It's just the way it is, and it's
interesting to know it and acknowledge it, but there's no need to "fix" it.
I know this bothers Grant (there's my Riv content!), and he can have his
issue with it but I don't share his concern. I'm not offended by his
concern over it and I don't think any less of him for it.

When I lived in California in the 90's I learned that 90% of the donut
shops in that state were owned by Cambodians. Almost all of the women
working in manicure shops are from Vietnam. Most NBA and NFL players are
black, but few hockey players, race car drivers, or professional golfers
are. In the absence of limits, a large fraction of the students at
top-tier US universities are Asian. These concentrations are way out of
whack with the groups' representation in the general population. Why is it
like that? 'Cause it is, that's why, and it's fine. Nobody's being shut
out, except maybe the non-Asians who can't get into the supposed "elite"
universities 'cause too many slots are taken up by the Asians, but the
Asians get those slots because they've earned them through hard work, which
is a *cultural* advantage they have over whites and blacks and Hispanics.

Really, there's much ado about nothing here. Like Patrick, I've been kinda
fascinated by the concentration of certain races and nationalities in
certain professions ever since I learned about those California
Cambodians---but as an observer, not as someone who thinks it's evidence of
something we need to fix.

Finally, there's nothing wrong or offensive about Patrick's post. What
flows to the keyboard starts in the mind, and Patrick doesn't *think* in a
way that would let him post something offensive. Sochill. No need for
anyone to get their panties in a twist over this.
