[RBW] Re: Black cyclists

2019-06-13 Thread Wilson Wilson
I made a long winded response which deleted verses posted. Here is the short
version. I have found this amusing to read. Historically, when there are people
who are viewed as " in need" those making issue are White. The mindset comes
from the years of good and bad experience. There is a study which I am going to
paraphrase as " we do not need your help". What it points out is the lack of
exposure to a number of USA norms unequally distributed due to not just
specifically race, but statistics.

To Steve, who keeps raving on about the cyclist of the DMV, those cyclist are
mentally stuck in the Lance Armstrong age of cycling. That every moment on the
bike is competition mindset. Their volumes at events in the surrounding area is
about rewards, not just getting out to ride. My opinion, yeah sure- try sitting
in on one of their group rides. I log hours of miles annually. I have invited
those who head that group in SoMD to ride with me at distance, somewhere
unfamiliar, during bad weather, or off road. They all run hide. Also, the
exclusive "Afro centric" nature of cycling together is not appealing to me. I
feel for the woman of color who find interest in cycling in the area. They can
be seen riding with a similar ignorant confidence. What is the largest danger
is the lack of education to the real bike and vehicular laws. The bike shop in
Waldorf has gone leaps and bounds to treat anyone who walks in the door without
pause for years. I gained respect for cycling thanks to the folks who worked
there years ago. Now that place is its own thing. The other stores with the
same name throughout the DMV are terrible to women and minorities. I have had
long talks and emails with the supposed powers of the brand. I live on my bike
traveling around the USA alone from highways to sliding around cliffs. I am an
oddity in itself who travels without a laptop or cell phone, but uses paper
maps and bad directions to get around. I am no ones marketing focus whether my
skin is fair or not.

Interestingly, the latest Specialized video focusing on the lack diversity is
thought to be cosidered timely. I think the truth is people who have been
excluded from their sales have not forgotten the American business face
historically. The cool trend I have seen is the bike shop near ethnic impacted
areas have stopped selling low quality brands or brand models such as Mongoose,
Jamis, Giant (I know), Trek Commuter line, Scott, Raleigh and similar. Many
have switched to provide bikes like Salsa, Ridley, Ibis, KTM (yeah yeah, I
know), Pinnenaro(sp), Cannondale higher models, Yeti, Fairdale (leaps nicer
than Electra). No one I know would "buy" anything from Specialized, Surly, or
Trek. There is no way I would buy a bike from REI Co-op brand knowing the real
cost/quality value of those bikes.

This year I have plotted out to participate in cycling events versus showing up
as a volunteer Which even then I am still the lone Black guy. Here are my
personal experences thus far this year. Each event goes like this sort of. I
show up early or on time on the bike I will ride in the event. Drop my gear. I
try speaking to folks with a general greeting, which is normally not met with a
respones. I wait for the start almost like everyone else. I sometimes make
something to eat and offer. I am always eating. If I am lucky someone
recognizes me from being elsewhere years or days ago riding. Then I have that
ice breaker. After the event, people who have seen me participating have no
doubt heard that I possibly had ridden three hundred plus miles just to ride
sixty at the event. Then I at the least get a hello.

2019-06-13 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I can’t believe this thread doesn’t have a whole a lot of replies! My
brother-in-law has a Clementine that my sister has stolen from him. He put up
resistance at first, but he usually takes his motorized scooter to work, so he
gave in and let her ride his bike. His Clem has become hers for weeks now.
However, when I showed her the chameleon green Clementines from Riv’s website,
she was wrecked. She really loved the bike in that bronze green color. My BIL
ordered her one as a surprise for their 11th anniversary! I may have possibly
planted the idea in his head after I read the email saying there were only four
left of chameleon green Clementines in my sister’s size. We are ending up with
an obscene amount of Clems in my family.

Which bike did you order?

[RBW] WTB: 52 Clem L or 45 Clem H

2019-06-13 Thread Johnny Alien
I wanted to narrow down my broad search to a Clem style. Technically based
on my size I should be on a 52 frame but the standover is huge on that 52
H. I had a 52 Hillborne and it was at the top of what I liked size wise
with standover and the 52 Clem H is even higher. So even though I prefer
the H I think I am leaning toward a L because I could get the 52 which is
probably a better overall fit but not have to worry about SO. That said I
would do a 45 H if that's whats around.

I don't need a saddle, seatpost or pedals but will take any other level of
frame to complete depending on what you want to sell.

I decided that I was going to narrow my broad search down to one. So what
I am looking for is a Clem H in size 45. Color doesn't matter. I don't
need a saddle, seatpost or pedals but will gladly take anything else or a
frame if that's what you have and the price is right! Someone here can
hook me up I am sure.

The sizing recs on the new MIT versions of old frames are definitely a little
confusing. I didn't really deal with that because this particular bike was
offered as a hardly ridden demo from Analog Cycles; all I had to do was check
the toptube length (I know I can step over a 53 frame) and confirm I could
reach the bars. Yep!

Cross posted to iBOB Group.

Hi all, looking to clean out some seldom used stuff. All prices include
shipping. I'll be able to send out Monday-Weds of next week. PayPal F+F
or cash app, please. If you're local to Portland and want to pickup I'll
knock a few bucks off.

If you're interested but think my pricing is off, let me know. I've tried
to price fairly but I'm certainly open to offers.

Photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/9NAZDfRjRNMSzeUH6

1) Sackville Medium Blue Saddle Sack--$200
Good condition. Used for a few months of commutes and a couple overnights.
Top notch quality, but I've discovered I prefer to use a traditionally
shaped saddlebag. Mild rub marks on the underside of bag from where a tire
bumped it. Includes post strap (not pictured). Does not include the tool
bag Riv used to sell these with. Several small pinholes where I had
buttons on the right side of the flap--see photos.

2) Sackville small tan saddleback --$135
Excellent condition. Few smudges where it rested against seat post but
otherwise like new. The Rivelo patch is sewed on with fine thread and could
be removed.

3) Stems: ITM millennium stems--$25 each.

Nice lightweight threadless stems for roadish builds. Lengths
130/120/110. All 80 degree. All in great shape. Two longer stems include
original boxes. (See photos) $25 each.

4) MKS Sneaker Pedals --$30
Great shape. About 5 years old but came in a lightly used Riv demo model.
I replaced with grip kings, but I know a lot of folks love these.

5) Portland Design Works fender flaps--$20.

New in package. "Road" version. I was going to put these on a bike with
50mm fenders and 38 mm tires but they look a little narros. Would look
great on a bike with narrowish (sub 35 mm) tires.

6) Compass Snoqualmie Pass--$75 for the pair.

I do not have photos of these yet but can take some on request. These were
purchased in 2017 but used for only about 4 months before I replaced them,
so tons of life left. Gumwalls are a little dirty from Portland roads.
Worth noting that these looked a little thinner than labeled (700 x 44) on
my Velocity Dyad rims. I did not measure with calipers and they are no
longer mounted.

Thanks,

Brett in PDX

Re: [RBW] Rene Herse rene crankset ultegra chains?

2019-06-13 Thread Doug Williams
So I would be getting the 7-8-9 speed version of the Rene Herse crank. As I
said, I am happily friction shifting 8 speed. But I might consider trying 9
speed with an Ultegra chain if the "special" Ultegra 9 speed chain was
going to magically interact with the Rene Herse crank in a way that would
not happen with a generic and mundane 8 speed chain. It sounds like there
is no such magic, so I will probably just stick with 8 speed.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: MIT Atlantis 53cm

2019-06-13 Thread dougP
"I'm a little mystified by Riv's PBH chart for this frame "

I just took a look at both the new & old sizing charts. On the old one,
they used PBH, but it's not on the new one. The closest dimension is
stand-over height. I'm 5'10" with an 84 cm PBH. On the old sizing chart,
I could ride either a 56 or 58 Atlantis. I have a 58 that fits well. When
I visited Rivendell & took a test ride on the new Atlantis, they asked my
saddle height (29" = 73.66 cm), set up a bike & sent me on my way. The fit
was so close to my 58 that I didn't realize it was a 53 until I returned &
asked (assuming it was a 56). So there is quite a difference between "new"
sizing & "old".

Maybe you take your PBH & subtract a couple of centimeters for clearance to
choose a standover height?

It’s an amazing build. I know a young woman with a 78 PBH who left teaching

You will not blow out a sidewall due to air pressure requirements of a tandem.
Tires are tested well beyond stated maximum pressure, and you probably won't

Jan's recommendation of the Ultegra chain is not confined solely to the

8 speed chains are pretty cheap, so how much harm could you get into if

It is my opinion that people are using the chain they want to use with
their Rene Herse cranksets. I use SRAM chains on my Rene Herse cranksets,

it. If I had a problem and suspected it was the chain's fault, I maybe
