[RBW] Life is better after 35

2019-07-08 Thread George Schick
35mm tires, that is. The weather this Spring in much of the Midwest has
made for difficult bicycle riding on limestone trails. There have been
numerous deep ruts, muddy puddles, and loose fine gravel from wash-outs due
to heavy rains. So I decided to switch from the regular 32mm Pasela's to
this
https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/equipment/cycling-components/bike-tires/hybrid-bike-tires/bontrager-connection-hybrid-tire/p/02499/

35mm "hybrid" tire and the difference has been dramatic. Not only has the
wider tire made riding more tolerable, but the smallish knobs on the tires
have made riding through sections of loose fine gravel much more
manageable. And they're relatively cheap at under $20 and relatively light
weight weight as well. Just sayin'

[RBW] FS: Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross

2019-07-08 Thread Eric Karnes

Hi all-

This is the final bike to sell before my move to England. This is
cross-listed with the iBob. I know it’s not a traditional Riv, but many on
this list are hearty supporters of Mike and Black Mountain Cycles. The
bikes are steel, the ride is excellent, the geometry allows the handlebars
to get up fairly high (even with a treadless setup), the drivetrain is
pretty Riv-ish, and other than my Rivs, this BMC is the only bike I’ve
owned that didn’t feel twitchy with drop bars. As such, I hope nobody has
any objection to me listing it here…

I would like to sell the entire bike for obvious reasons. But if there are
no initial takers, I would be open to selling only the frame, wheels, and
brakes (and parting out the rest). The bike is about six months old. I put
in my deposit a month before I found out I would be moving overseas. I
received it in January and have been riding it off and on since the
beginning of the spring. Like all BMCs, it rides great, but a serious
multi-surface bike like this won’t be as useful for the kind of riding I’ll
be doing across the pond. For reference, my PBH is 90cm. I ride a 62cm
SimpleOne and a 63cm Hilsen. It fits me very much like the 62cm SimpleOne,
but due to the sloping top tube would be great for someone slightly shorter
as well. The saddle height in the photos is 79.125 inches and the
handlebars are about an inch-ish above saddle height (with room to go
higher if desired). Condition is like new, not a scratch on it that I can
see. The full geometry and technical details can be found here:

https://blackmtncycles.com/tech-info/mcd-frame-tech/

New BMC Monstercross Disc frames go for 700 and Mike’s standard builds go
for 2700. I’m asking the following:

$1450: Complete with the following build (Note: pedals, saddle, bags, and
bottles/cages not included):

Frame: 56cm Black Mountain Cycles MCD

Headset: Cane Creek 40

Wheelset: Shimano 105 Hubs to WTB KOM Tubeless compatible (hand-built by
Mike at BMC)

Tires: Compass Steilacoom 38mm (Very Light Use)

Cassette: XT 9sp

Rear Derailleur: Deore 9sp

Chain: SRAM 10sp

Bottom Bracket: Shimano UN-55

Crankset: Sugino XD Low Double with Chainguard

Chainring: Wolftooth 40t

Front Derailleur: None

Brakes: Shimano R317 Mechanical Disc Calipers with Shimano 160mm Rotors

Brake Levers: Shimano Tiagra

Shifters: Shimano 9sp Dura Ace Barends

Stem: Dimension 60mm w/ Spacers

Handlebar: Salsa Cowbell 2 44cm

Tape: Black Newbaums

Seatpost: Kalloy Silver

All of the above parts were purchased new with the frame with the exception
of the crankset and seatpost. The current setup is obviously 1x, but I can
provide two options depending on your preference:

(1) Shimano bar-ends (both L and R included), Wolf-tooth ring w/ Sugino
chainguard, and no front derailleur, or…

(2) Shimano bar-ends (both L and R included), Standard Sugino wide-low
rings (40 and 26t) and chainguard, and Deore front derailleur (uninstalled)

Photos here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/35128198@N02/albums/72157709524085561

Bike will be well-packed and shipped and insured via BikeFlights at buyer’s
expense. (FYI: It’s not yet packed, so I’ll need a week together a box and
get it done properly). Any questions, feel free to PM me. Thanks for
looking!

Eric

[RBW] Re: "Sadly, Long Shen is closing" Another loss to lugged steel frame production

2019-07-08 Thread Johnny Alien
I seem to remember a Blahg not so long ago in which Grant spoke about them
fearing about the lug manufacturing stopping. I remember he said that they
worked out something that made him feel a bit better. A huge stockpile of
lugs or something? I can't remember but I do think this was a concern so I
am not shocked if it's true.

Coincidentally, I just ordered the commemorative patches to be made. Get them
on Etsy: https://etsy.me/2L9smrG

I can’t add an image from my phone, but the patch is a riff on the Riv logo,
and a Reader-style headline that plays off the Rivendell slogan.

Note: Grant approved the production of these, and my goal is to cover costs and
donate profits and unsold patches to Rivendell at or after the Rivmoot (aka

Thanks a ton,

If using a Shimano sealed bottom bracket with the plastic spacer, check the
spacer is not cracked. A cracked spacer can cause a rhythmic click.

[RBW] RBW at 25: The Fellowship of the Rigs

2019-07-08 Thread Joe Bunik
Chaingang,

Coming up Real Soon Now is the RBW25 weekend at Samuel Taylor State Park -

Fri, Jul 19, 2019, 2pm Sun, Jul 21, 2019, 12pm PDT
Devil's Gulch Group Site 1&2
http://rbwxxv.eventbrite.com

- And while we can thank Justin in Oakland for laying the groundwork
of the event (read: HE RESERVED US THE GROUP SITES), it's going to be
up to each of us to make it happen!

So: Who is planning to attend? What level of riding are you hoping
for? What ideas or adventures would you like to have?

Speaking for myself, I can only make it over for Friday (will stay
over in camp) and Saturday riding. I'd like to make a ride from camp
around the Pine Mountain Loop, and then either return to camp via
BoFax / Bolinas Ridge OR, down into Fairfax via Repack.

I think it'll be "each-their-own" in terms of food, but it might also
be fun/nice to bring something to share for (either) evening?

Let's hear some enthusiasm and make this happen!

riding at RAGBRAI. I reconnected the pedal with lots grease and still have
the issue. I didn't think the sealed bearing Shimano SPD pedals were the
culprit.

I mentioned this to a rather nice mechanic, who asked me it it was clicking
when I was standing off the saddle, and I said no. So we thought it might
be the Brooks B-17 saddle I use, it being all floppy and such with the
missing middle. So I tightened the leather on it and the clicking remained.

Turns out, it was the seatpost connection that was doing the clicking.
Something about the titanium on the Thompson seatpost, or the seatpost
connection itself. Slathered everything up with some (mountains of) grease
and the clicking is now gone.

In my experience, this is a bearing issue 100% of the time. I run Crank Bro’s
in all my bikes, and have become adept at rebuilding them to correct this.

[RBW] Pedal click driving me batty

2019-07-08 Thread Bill Rhea
Reaching out in case y'all have any remedies for this phenomena...

So many times I've used a pair of pedals for a while, and then they start
making a little click 1x per pedals stroke, usually when putting pressure
on the RH pedal. I'm pretty sure I've isolated the click to the pedals
themselves, throwing on a new pair and the clicking ceases.

Pedals where I've experienced this phenomena (going back historically):

Sealed-bearing types:
Thin gripsters (
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/pedals/products/thin-gripster-pedals-dark-grey-vp-001
)
Velo Orange Sabot pedals (
https://velo-orange.com/collections/pedals/products/grand-cru-sabot-pedals)

Traditional bearing / cone type:
MKS Sneaker pedals (
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/pedals/products/mks-rmx-sneaker-pedals)
MKS Touring pedals

I don't have access to a bench vise otherwise I would have just cleaned and
re-packed the loose ball ones. I suppose I could get a new bearing set for
the Sabot pedals (which I'll likely try).

Am I missing something else that could be causing this click? Open to
hearing any possible remedies for this, short of exorcism

Thanks (in advance),

[RBW] Re: Servicing Silver hubs?

2019-07-08 Thread David Carner
I have a production Silver hub. My memory is not as detailed as Jeremy's,
but I took the hub apart to add grease to the pawls when I first received
it. It required no special tools and Jeremy's description fits what I do
recall. I have had no problems with the hub over approximately 3000 miles.

Deacon Patrick,

Please don't take my delayed response to your last set of replies as a sign
of lack of appreciation. We were out of town visiting family over the long
weekend and I didn't have the technological means to reply. That being
said, thank you very much for your insight! You saved me hours of research
and gave me something perfectly tailored to our capabilities. I am
literally counting down the days (29 days from today) until I can explore
these trails with my family (and maybe for a few hours without them).

Thank you,
Matt

Thank you Jeremy, for all that detail!

Based on my experience with the VO hub, just lubricating the pawls
themselves and not the interface was enough to make a huge difference in
noise level. I'll make sure the interface stays clean.

Best regards,
Eric

Hi Drw,

Of course everyone's experience varies, but my 48cm Sam Hillborne has an
ETT of 54cm, and even with swept-back handlebars the bike just felt too big
to me (I'm 5'2"). We converted it to drops for my 5'8" boyfriend and he
absolutely loves the bike -- rides it for everything.

It's great that it works for your 5'0" partner, though!
