Not Norman, but the brakes are marked as Daytona, which didn't come with
anything other than short reach. Furthermore, judging from where the brake
pads are located on the brake arms, these brakes aren't fully maximized for
tire clearance. I would ask Norman to confirm the largest tire he fitted
into the frame, but I have similar Campagnolo brakes with similar pad "hit
points" that I couldn't fit anything larger than 30mm under.

Lugs are great and my custom will have them, but it's going to have some

Re: [RBW] Re: thoughts on a new wheel

2019-07-10 Thread Ian A
You'd have to have that spoke under massive load to break the rim like that
unless the rim was already knackered.

Check your front rim for wear on the brake track. It might be time for two new
rims.

FWIW, if you have the right size spoke wrench, you could do the rim swap
yourself and just take the laced up wheel to a shop for truing. Just make sure
you're using an experienced wheel mechanic. I've replaced a few worn out rims
just by taping the new rim to the old and "moving the spokes over". I build my
own wheels, but the rim swap method is fast and allows one to reuse the spokes
and nipples.

IanA
The process is described in this YouTube video. I haven't watched it through,
just wanted to illustrate my meaning

[RBW] Re: RBW at 25: The Fellowship of the Rigs

2019-07-10 Thread André Pinter
I added my name on the google doc, I did rsvp on the original eventbrite.
Not sure who is managing that but could be useful to get that list. The
plan is I am riding up from SF with Bill Rhea on Friday, not sure if I'll
stay Saturday night or not. Happy to join others for the ride up.

[RBW] Re: "Sadly, Long Shen is closing" Another loss to lugged steel frame production

2019-07-10 Thread M Talley
Ah yes, so this problem's arrival has been mentioned. The solution that is
on-going and illustrated by that custom Nobilette build with lugged
headtube top and bottom and seat tube/binder really illustrate where builds
are currently with the production frames also. These changes might indicate
there will be no more fully lugged production models going forward. The
language of this statement would seem to suggest a change in the original
ethos of the brand:

"Lugs aren't necessary, but they add some non-genericness, and they add
excitement to the bicycle archaeological finds of the future. That is the
worst reason for building with them, but it's also undeniable."

The better reasons for building with lugs if left out of the discussion
seems a change from Rivendell Bicycle Works' beginnings. A sad reality of
the times? Does this eventually mean no more A. Homer Hilsen or Sam
Hillborne or Cheviot?

I shall attend, representing the great County of San Diego and the
Borderlandz!

I'm happy to include Pine Mountain on Saturday, and defer to my friends who
know the trails and maps.

Will this also serve as an Entmoot? I see at least one Quickbeam listed as
attending. Maybe Sunday can include a gentleperson's Entmoot-inspired ride
(or ride home), as we did 5 years ago.

Looking forward to this!

Re: [RBW] Re: thoughts on a new wheel

2019-07-10 Thread Hunter Ellis
Overtightening a spoke usually causes the nipple or spoke to fail, not the
rim. Seems like a rim failure that, well, maybe is expected after 10 years
of braking on that surface, or maybe its a flaw, fault of the rim itself.
The rim should be the last thing to give, not the first

This is probably something for the bike shop, but I could also use a "thorn

[RBW] Re: thoughts on a new wheel

2019-07-10 Thread Hunter Ellis
In my experience, a well built 32h wheel is just fine for
everything...Mountian Bikes have 32 holes these days.

You can get a new XT deore rim brake hub for $42, which should last as long
as anything else.

The Velocity Quill is a great road rim if you're running wider tires than
35's, the A23 if not. Sapim/DT Swiss double butted spokes and brass
nipples. Boom. THe Velo Orange PBP rim worked well for me on tires up to
35mm wide, and is a much cheaper option (on sale for $43 right now!). But
it doesn't have machined sidewalls, which means its easy for your brakes to
squeal. And I"d trust the Velocities over the VO's to last another 10 years.

I probably recommended things on the lighter side than a lot of Riv folks,
but...If you're lean, and don't ride on singletrack with a heavy load, I'd
be surprised if a well-built wheel broke. Most important thing, I think, is
who builds it. So get a trusted bike mechanic to lace it up, and it should
last a while.

My posts are usually delayed for a few days, so by the time you see this,
100 pther people might have better ideas ;-)

Yes, check the hub first of all . A wheel built by Rich should not
"just start to wobble" due to the build itself, regardless of time and
"normal-intended" use. If in doubt, I'd call or email Rich before taking it*
any* shop.

[RBW] Re: thoughts on a new wheel

2019-07-10 Thread Ian A
What Joe says, but also check the hub itself. Loose cones can cause a wobble. A
cracked hub flange will also cause wobble.

Even a worn out rim will hold true if there are no cracks in the rim itself.
There is also a possibility the thread on one or more spokes/nipples has for
some reason stripped. This is a simple matter of replacing the affected spoke
and/or nipple.

Definitely try another bike shop or just return to the first one and ask them
to take a closer look. A component that's failing (like one with a stripping
thread) might hold adjustment in the truing stand, but fail under stress. The
shop will probably appreciate a second try at it. Just make sure the mechanic
actually has some proper experience with building wheels (not just truing them).

2019-07-10 Thread Brett Callahan
Dirt drop, pads, 90mm technomic, 60 mm technomic, friction shifters, and
North St. Bag are now sold. Updated list:

*Stems: *

Nitto Technomic 25.4 x 110mm (220 tall) $25 Decent shape. Insertion marks
and scratches.

Nitto Stem (not technomic--I think Pear--nicer, more satin finish) $35 Very
nice shape. Essentially new.

*Grips: *

Oury Lock-on flat bar grips. $18. Good/newish shape. Scratch on one. See
photo.

Plastic Retro Grips $10. As used by Riv on the early Clem Smiths.

*Bags: *

Sackville Medium Blue Saddle Sack. $175. Good condition. Used for a few
months of commutes and a couple overnights. Top notch quality, but I've
discovered I prefer to use a traditionally shaped saddlebag. Mild rub
marks on the underside of bag from where a tire bumped it. Includes post
strap (not pictured). Does not include the tool bag Riv used to sell these
with. Several small pinholes where I had buttons on the right side of the
flap--see photos.

*Brake Levers: *

Tektro "City" Canti Brake Levers. $18. Used but very serviceable.

Tektro V Brake Levers. $18. Very good shape.

Shimano BL-R780 Deore V Brake Levers. $20 Very good shape.

Shimano Super SLR Drop Bar Levers. 2 available. Both in fair-good shape.
$20/set

*Shifting: *

Shimano Altus 8 Speed read derailleur $15. Grant Peterson approved with
bigger pulleys.

*Saddles:*

Brooks Professional. $65. I cannot break this thing in and switched to a
B17. Some signs of use, but in very good shape.

VO Woman's Sprung Saddle. $40. Lots of use. It looks kinda neat but not as
nice as a Brooks. It squeaks, but not as much as my sprung Brooks.

*Misc: *

FSA Metropolis single ring crankset. $40. 175mm arms, 45 tooth. Black
bashguard on siver. Used and shows it, but in decent shape.

Soma 27.2 Silver Layback Seatpost. $15. New. May have been inserted but not
ridden.

Panaracer Pari Moto 650b x 38 mm. $40 for pair. Good shape. Sidewalls are a
little dirty from a Portland winter, but many, many miles left. (no photos
yet)

[RBW] Re: A Family Clementine

2019-07-10 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Thanks, Everyone. I was extraordinarily blessed when my husband’s parents
became my family. “In-law”was never an adequate name for who they were to me; I
always shuddered using it to refer to them. My father in law was the stuff of
lore - the most wonderful man who was generous with anything that was his; his
affection, his time, his prayers and his resources. He poured them out on his
family and loved us all to pieces. He was a brilliant man who could tell a
story like no one else; he was pee-your-pants funny, He died unexpectedly at
62, 9 years ago.

I have often wondered why such good folks have to be taken away at such young
ages, but I think it’s the wrong question to ask. Maybe the better question is,
how did I win the lottery when I got assigned to my family?

[RBW] thoughts on a new wheel

2019-07-10 Thread Paul Richardson
howdy folks

i've been riding the stock wheel that came on my 67 homer back in 2011. i
haven't been the best about maintenance, to say the least, and what i
thought was just a bit out of true turned very rapidly into a significant
wobble. basically i think i'm due for a new rear wheel and am curious to
hear if anyone has general thoughts or some pointers toward where to narrow
down the options and make a solid decision. currently it's a rich built,
velocity rimmed, 36-spoke, deore x7 nine-speed. and like i said it's been
great since '11. looking for something similarly reliable. i'm a pretty
lean guy but have a large saddle bag that i sometimes weigh down pretty
well, but no loaded touring or anything so far (and, sadly, nothing planned
for the near future).

i get that this is all very personal but with the number of combinations of
*everything
*i get a bit overwhelmed and would love input from folks who think more
deeply about these things than i.

thanks a ton!

Looks pretty beefy for a 35mm tire, and the price is certainly right.

I think Waterford used HJ lugs around the time they were building the early
Rivendells. I had a Waterford 2200 that had HJ lugs.
