[RBW] Re: The Final Legolas

2019-09-07 Thread Brian Campbell
Here is a quick update:

I got things toghter and did a 7 mile shake down ride. WOW! What a fund
ride! I am going to take it out tomorrow for a couple of hours
consecutively to make syre everything is in good order and the tape the
bars.

Build so far

Legolas Frame/fork built by Mark Nobilette
Tubes are a mix of Columbus Life and Columbus Zona.
I asked for the same color as the Rivendell Redwood model from days gone by.
Velocity A23 & Dura Ace "hubbed" wheels set 32/28
10 Speed 12-30 Cassette
10 Speed Ultegra, Long Cage RD
CX70 FD
CX70 Cantilever brakes
10 Speed Dura Ace Downtube shifters
Electra Ticino crank 170mm Arms
Sun XCD 46/30 rings
Rivendell 110mm Cup & Cone bottom bracket
Brooks B17 Special (Ti)
MIche seat post
Shimano SPD double sided pedals
FSA Headset
100mm Nitto (new Pear)l stem
42mm Nitto Noodles
TRP Levers
Velo Orange Cages

The bike with pedals, saddle and water bottle cages weighs 21.8 lbs
(Digital hanging scale). The ride is quick, handling is quick and the paint
has a fine, metallic finish that looks great in the sun. I waited 7 months
for the frame and am grateful that I now have it to ride. I think its going
to be a lot of fun!

[RBW] WTB: 46cm Appaloosa

2019-09-07 Thread Joe Bernard
They claim 30-35 miles if you don't stay in Full Assist the whole time, which
seems about right to me. I've been doing shorter rides with it so can't verify
this, but if I jam the power and go like heck I still have range left after 15
miles.

[RBW] WTB: 26" wheel Riv or similar

2019-09-07 Thread Joe Bernard
Ok, my reach-out for a 46cm Appaloosa landed with a thud, I don't think people
are even clicking on it 'cause there's none out there. So let's try this:

I have a 26" Copenhagen (electric) Wheel I'd like to match up to an Appaloosa,
Clem or basically anything else out there that fits the Riv vibe. Whatcha got?
You can text me at 415 786 4623.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa 700c to 650b via Paul motolite barkes

2019-09-07 Thread esoterica etc

I second this idea. Grant is basically saying in the catalog comparing the Joe
and the Atlantis that they’re essentially the same bike, just different wheel
size (56cm and smaller). I was seriously considering a Joe for a long time, but
then I built up a budget 650b conversion to see if I liked 650b better than
700c, and ultimately got the 56cm Atlantis.

Even if you could find a canti or v-brake that could adjust for the drop in
wheel size, I think you’d be sacrificing a lot in ride quality. In my opinion,
the designs of the current lineup from Rivendell are a result of decades of
engineering refinement, and the less you mess with them, the better the ride
will be. Sure, the bike will still roll if you put smaller wheels on it, but I
doubt it’ll have that Riv magic feel any more. Sell the Joe and get an Atlantis
is my vote as well.

[RBW] WTB: 46cm Appaloosa

2019-09-07 Thread Joe Bernard
Per Ryan's question: I quite like my Copenhagen Wheel. It pops into a frame
quite easily, and all the works are inside that giant red disk so there's no
looking for a place to mount the battery and stringing wires and whatnot. It
runs off an app on my phone, which is also pretty nifty.

It's torque-sensing and somehow "learns" the way you ride - still not sure if I
detect this - so it's much more of a cycling experience than the high-power
cadence systems I've used. You push the pedals and the more effort you put in,
the more virtual tailwind you receive.

Its one massive (literally) drawback is putting all that weight including
battery in the wheel. I haven't attempted a road side flat repair yet and don't
look forward to it, the super awesome benefit of mid-drive kits is you get to
keep your normal lightweight wheels. If you buy one of these things I highly
recommend using one of those Schwalbes with all the fancy shmancy puncture
protection.

[RBW] Re: A Few Photos From Saturday's Ride

2019-09-07 Thread ascpgh
Very nice ride report and pictures, I'm catching up on close looks and
reads after a marathon work stint through last weekend and this week. In
your riding around Utah do you have thorn troubles like PM's goatheads down
in NM?

Images remind me of rides in the desert I took as a kid from my
grandparents' home in the west valley of Phoenix. My grandfather had an
English Raleigh with rack, fork lock and best of all, a bottle generator
for its dim headlight and fender mounted tail light. I rode into the open
desert, sometimes on dirt tracks, others on animal trails on that bike. I
loved sneaking out on that bike, returning just as the adults' Canasta game
was starting, my arrival at dark plus one not drawing attention.
