[RBW] Re: 63cm Roadeo arrived from Seattle

2019-09-15 Thread Austin B.
35 miles out in the country on the Roadeo today and man, I like this bike
more & more. So smooth and comfortable. I topped out at 45mph on one
downhill. And I rode a dirt section of nearby Sam's Creek Road on it with
no trouble--something I'd never have attempted on my RB-1 with 25mm rubber.

I'm starting to like the Nitto M178 Mark's bar. But how do others set up
the angle of these? I've always ridden drops where the top section of the
bars run parallel to the ground--like Noodles. I originally set the Mark's
Bar up with the top parallel to the ground. But the levers feel oddly
placed that way. So it appears I am to rotate the bars downward. But how
much? Is there a "Standard" or is it a personal preference thing? There is
surprisingly little on the 'net about these handlebars.

[RBW] Rough drive train issue

2019-09-15 Thread David Carner
I have had a similar problem with my 2010 Sam. A little different in that it is
most noticeable on the drive side down stroke and particularly when spinning
when not climbing. I put it down to poor peddling technique until it got worse.
After making sure it was not a crank issue I have determined that there is play
between the hub body and cassette; radially, not laterally. For the first time
ever I actually used a torque wrench to tighten the lock ring to the specified
torque and that has stopped it for now. The cassette is 12-36 Shimano and hub
is Deore, both from RBW.

I'm in. First reason -- I simply want to support Rivendell; I want it to

[RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2019-09-15 Thread S
As much as I would love for the bike to be fully lugged and have a level
TT, I think you are right that it will most likely have modern Riv geo and
fewer lugs. So yeah, maybe a more roadish version of the Clem, the latter
of which Grant says he thinks of as a mountain bike. A new Hunq would be
fun, but that would make for a lot of frames in the mountain bike category.

I agree — I started by taking it to LBS and did not get an answer. Then I took
it apart piece by piece and put it back together which also didn’t give me a
definite answer. Then I took it to RivHQ and Will suggested it just needing
time to break in which seems entirely plausible. Figured I would post here to
garner the collective wisdom of folks with similar bikes that may have
experienced a similar issue which has so far been reassuring.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo on Cycle Greater Yellowstone 2019

2019-09-15 Thread reynoldslugs

Steve, in response to your questions:

For handlebars, agree 100% that Drop Bars are the way to go for a ride like
this.

Gearing: my gearing is always exceptionally low. My Roadeo with 22-34-44
and a 13-30 may have been the lowest gearing out of all the riders. I
need those low gears - - with the assembled orthopedic and other medical
issues, and being over 200 pounds, I just really need super low gears.
Patellar tendinitis means I never climb out of the saddle at all, so I I
just spin up the hills. Which, of course, is a lot easier in the long run.

Most of the other riders did not have gears that low. If you're fit and
not too heavy, I would say that a compact double with a 34 tooth inner
would be ok, as long as you have a 34 tooth low gear on your cassette.

Two years ago, I did the ride on a Della Santa with an ultra-compact double
- - 26-40 chainrings, with a SRAM 11-36 cassette.

The hills were long, but usually not steeper than 6%. Cycle Greater
Yellowstone will post the ride profiles several months before the event (I
think they use Map My Ride, with elevation profiles), so we can all know
what we're in for.

I did the ride on a Roadeo, and I have a Rambouillet as well. IMHO both
bikes are well-suited for the course - your Rambouillet (with triple) would
be a great choice if you are willing to put on drop bars.

Good luck, hope to see you next year.

Max

[RBW] Rough drive train issue

2019-09-15 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
I’ve also experienced this and my interpretation is that the chainrings need
some time to get rid of their "rough” edges (from machining?). Maybe someone
with a background in tool making can chime in on the manufacturing processes
and postulate on that?...

I’ve only noticed it on low to mid grade cranks. Almost always on Sugino 9 sp.

And it always feels gross...but eventually goes away.

[RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2019-09-15 Thread Austin B.
What's in a name?

Charlie Hustle is a nickname for Pete Rose
Gallop is something a horse does

I'll put my 2 cents in for a mostly tigged, cheaper roadish country bike to
replace the Appaloosa and Sam. Modern Riv geo with long chainstays, sloping
TT.

Would they include centerpull brake mounts for 700c road wheels and canti's
for 650b offroad wheels on the same bike? Has anyone ever done that?

Austin
