[RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2019-09-20 Thread Bill Eberle in Portland OR
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. I was totally smitten when
the Kirk Precision came out back in the day. They don't make milk crates out of
magnesium, do they? If the Charlie J Gallop is just as much off the wall as the
Kirk, I'm all for it.

I think that was made of magnesium or something very brittle. Only a few
were made, most broke. Unless I have it confused with another bike. Though
that would take some effort.

I am converting my Hunq from a dedicated commuter to a more trail oriented
role. One thing I have learned from that bike is it can do anything. As I
convert over I am selling some items. As the subject line says I have a
small grey grid saddle sack and a R14 rack (with tombstone). The saddle
sack is still a little dusty from the gravel trail and has two small areas
of black glaze from a rack. there are no holes, tears, or rips. One of the
leather straps has some surface cracking but otherwise no wear. The rack
has one spot of black oxidation from contact with my basket. The rack comes
with 4 sets of stays, one uncut, 1 cut for a 26 in mount, one uncut and
unbend short set, and one short set bent at 90 degrees. The pictures below
show the condition of the items. I am asking $100 each plus shipping from
46208, or $175 if you want both items. PM please if interested. Paypal
friends and family preferred.

Lug-less, maybe. But the latest offerings are fillet-brazed, a horse of a
different color than tig-welded frames. And true to the construction of
some of the earliest Hillibikes, especially those made by T. Ritchey, I
believe Grant owned one at some point. His might have been a road though,
don't recall. Also, even the tig frames have the seat cluster lug and the
fork crowns, unlike any other bicycles being offered today that I know of.
A nice connection to the roots.

Re: [RBW] Be-fendered Matthews: New from Kelpie.

2019-09-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. Chauncey Matthews ought to have raised the seatstay bridge about 3
mm higher, but even so, he did a good job of accomodating almost 30" tall
60+ mm tires with sufficient clearance for wide fenders in a frame that
allows a Q of about 157 mm (160 actual, since I very conservatively chose a
130 mm bb).

Nice habit!

One of my pet peeves is other cyclists or pedestrians NOT doing the
mirror/shoulder check when stepping out or passing. They just drift right
out.
It's these people that need to have a rear-view mirror glued permanently to
the side of their head :-S

[RBW] Re: Helmets (again)

2019-09-20 Thread Julian Westerhout
In 1978 I had a head injury (along with a number of other not-very-fun
injuries) when I was ht by a car while cycling. No helmet -- very few wore
them back then -- I think the original Bell Biker and leather hair nets
were just about the only options.

Since then I just about always wear a helmet -- although as a sweaty guy
anything on my head adds to the sweat, esp. in the summer, but many modern
helmets are really well vented and light. I currently use a Specialized
Prevail II.

I get tired of the vehemence of both the pro and anti side of this debate
-- along with other topics (I'm really tired of folks who try to convert me
to carbon, etc. with fervor). I adopt a sort of "just ride" philosophy. I
do share my experience and opinion if asked, but don't get evangelical.

Arguing at length with folks who are not listening is at best a thankless
endeavor, made all the more so on the internet.

Hi Kai. I've never come from Minnewaska to pick up the train (in fact I
rarely train it on recreational rides) but yes, there is an E-W rail trail
that shoots off the one that runs North South from Gardiner to
Poughkeepsie. Supposedly also one that goes from this N-S trail right up to
Minnewaska. So you could probably do it mostly on trails. You can
googlecheck, but I would guess, depending on your exact departure point,
you could leave at 8:30 and still have a cushion. But at night on
unfamiliar terrain, for myself, I would probably leave around 2 or 3 in the
afternoon..?;^) See ya tomorrow!

2019-09-20 Thread Mark Roland
Ed C. wrote:...* like you all I'm struggling to figure out what niche it
would fill amongst their offerings.*

While it may or may be perceived as filling a niche, I don't think that
matters. It's a bicycle design that was considered interesting or worthy
enough by the designer or designers to bring into being. Part of that is
necessity, of course, because we constantly demand something "new" and
because that's mostly what sells bicycles in enough volume to survive. Part
of it would fit in with the ongoing ideas of the designer or designers. In
a bigger company, a new model is often targeted at a "niche" then updated
every year with a different color and the latest components.

Rivendell's business model can't be quite like that, and for the most part
doesn't want to be. Anyway, there are only so many so called "niches", and
after that, it's mostly marketing. Rivendell bicycles of all models are
already in a tiny niche of quality steel bicycles without discs or motors
designed for Just Ride type riding. Looked at from this perspective, as
Garth points out (not quite correctly in his original context, but hey, we
cut gurus some slack) A Rivendell is a Rivendell is a Rivendell. But yeah,
curious as always to see a new bicycle from Rivendell. Really the only
bicycle company I can say that about at this point.
