Re: [RBW] Re: Huge Rosco Mixte

2019-10-08 Thread Amit Singh
Just a quick update for everyone.

I mounted an Ursus Jumbo Double Leg Kickstand on the Mixte and so far it
works extremely well.

I've also ordered the Hamax Caress Rear Child Bike Seat (for rack), which
arrives tomorrow, and am looking forward to it. The only bummer is that he
isn't as close to me as I would like... it's so nice when we are right up
in the cockpit viewing the world together.

+++

The reason I went with the Hamax Caress Rear Child Bike Seat is because:

1) It is more traditional looking -- I think traffic respects people with
child seats and want to provide the most well-known example to drivers.

2) In the event of a fall, it provides more coverage - protecting precious
cargo. The Yepp Minis look as though the passenger is more vulnerable.

3) It was amongst the most highly rated; and one reputable website with
experienced real-world riders placed it above the Yepp.

+++

Are there other logistics I should be aware of? Do I need to get a pool
noodle and secure it to the bike seat to ensure cars give me 3 feet?

Also, thank you all for the generous offers to send me stuff and also for
the wonderful guidance.

As the little one matures, I am looking forward to going on more adventures
together. So far, he loves riding with me on the bicycle. I think it's his
favorite thing to do :)

[RBW] Re: All Rounder

2019-10-08 Thread Joe Bernard
Jim: The cost at the moment is high, all I'm seeing on searches is $1749, which
is full price. I've seen them as low as $1400 this summer, though, so keep an
eye out. I got mine used. (Keep in mind the whole motor-and-battery system is
in the hub, a lot of low-price hub kits out there list motor and battery prices
separately).

It's a torque-sensing pedal assist system which reacts to how hard you press
the pedals. The best way to describe it is levels of tailwind: If you very
lightly pedal, you'll get a light tailwind; mash the pedals and the wind gets
much bigger. It's a nice experience because it feels like regular cycling, just
augmented.

This cycling experience can be modulated with the power settings, too. There's
Zero, Eco, Standard and Turbo. I mostly ride in Standard which is a fair amount
of boost on rolling terrain, but not like a giant motor hammering you down the
road. I was out a while today, and into strong headwinds and up hills I just
stayed in Standard and hammered the pedals..I worked up a bit of a sweat. Turbo
I reserve for traffic when I would rather lead the cars than squeeze between
them, or near the end of a ride when I'm tired and just want to blast home.
Range is about 25-30 miles if I stay away from Turbo; I can easily kill the
battery in 10 miles if I blast it the whole way..so I don't do that!

The nifty thing about this kit over others on the market is it's all
self-contained, there's no looking for a place to mount the battery, no wires
strung all over the frame. It's all in the wheel: you flip a switch on the
wheel itself, then adjust power settings from the app on your phone (I have a
Quad Lock mount on the bars). The app shows speed, power level and battery
level; plus records the whole trip including a map trace of the ride.

I'm very happy with it. I've owned more powerful (like stupid power up to
40mph, this one tops out at 25) mid-drive kits that are quite the project to
install and are kinda insane to ride..this one is more manageable for me as a
cycling experience. A drawback is all the weight is in the back, it can feel a
little odd until you get adapted. Also, I don't look forward to wrangling it
off the bike to fix a flat, so I run a tough and heavy Schwalbe back there. My
first attempt at flat fixing would be to pull the tube from the side of the rim
and see if I can get the hole patched, but if push comes to shove I can flip
the bike over and pull the wheel..I carry a 15mm PDW "butter knife" wrench for
the axle nuts.

I hope that's clear enough, holler if you have any more questions.

2019-10-08 Thread Brian Campbell
At 51, I find myself in 2 original rock bands. One with my wife and
brother-in-law and the other, with long time friends. Writing, rehearsing,
playing shows, recording music and all of the stuff that comes with it is
taking most of my free time at the moment. We are all self taught players
and do it as a creative outlet, with no real aspirations, other than to do
it.

That said we have racked up thousands of listens on Spotify etc. and the
band with my wife was contacted recently by a small label who wants to put
out our music on vinyl. Perseverance pays! ;-] This was something we all
did before our children were born and decided to start again, now that they
are older and starting their own lives.

The two worlds occasionally (cycling & playing music) collide as they will
in early November when I have to play a show on 11/2 (late night affair)
and do a 100k gravel ride on 11/3. We shall see how I fare.

Re: [RBW] Bombadil

I would value it between $2500-$3000 also. Only problem being a lot of
individuals who want to spend that kind of money want something new (even if
not better). The biggest hit would be the beautiful build (full builds) just
don’t hold values well. I would say the frame etc is worth $1500+.
Also not needing to sell can allow you to name a fair price and wait for the
right future owner to surface. If you had an upset wife or something other
motivating reason to dump and cash out. $1800-$2000 would send this list into a
tizzy and people would be scrambling to dump one of their bikes to upgrade to
your beautifully painted and decked out Bombadil.
Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson
West Michigan
P. S. Took my wife single tracking today and road my 64cm Bombadil at one point
she asked, “why are you even riding that, it is not even a mountain bike”.

Usually each or both are correct from the perspective they are examining the

Lots of room for interpretation usually within the lines and words.

Re: [RBW] OT: non-bike hobbies

2019-10-08 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch
What an interesting bunch of folks, I wish more of you lived closer to me.

While my wife was pregnant I worked on reducing my hobbies, so that I could
spend more time with my son. I picked music (guitar) and reading as things
I could do either alone or with him. He's 13 and we still play music
together sometimes, and still read the occasional book out loud to each
other. The key thing I try to include is that it should be music or books
that are new to both of us, or already loved by both of us, so there is a
shared sense of exploration or appreciation.

Later we started biking as an activity we could do together as a family,
and I still ride with my son a lot. But we also spend time walking by the
river, skipping stones, talking about stuff, birding, etc. These are all
good times, year round.

Over time my son and I have also had a great time exploring and
experimenting with the simple machines (lever, inclined plane, pulley, etc).

Outside of family time, I run a fencing school where I research and teach
historical swordplay, and also translate renaissance era fencing texts to
English. This is my main outlet for spending time with other adults.

Finally, my woodworking hobby has been on hiatus for a long time, but I'm
starting to get into that again. Designing stuff and making it is pretty
rewarding.

Re: [RBW] OT: non-bike hobbies

2019-10-08 Thread David Bivins
My hobbies:

Analog (mostly) synthesizers and effects; playing with and building. It's
pretty inexpensive to get into building electronics. You can start with
some simple hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches) and an entry-level
soldering iron. As with bikes, you can crank up the geekiness (and expense)
as high as you'd like. Aion Electronics (https://aionelectronics.com/) is a
great source for kits (and printed circuit boards if you want to buy your
own parts) for building clones of many classic and rare guitar pedals. If
you play guitar or another electronic instrument, you can then use it! I
find the smell of rosin on a rainy day to be quite relaxing ;) (kidding
kind of - get a fan).
I've built a large modular synthesizer in the older 5U format (MOTM for the
fellow travelers, 30+ modules). The modules were offered as kits back in
the 90s and I saved my pennies for each one. It's now an impressive
instrument from which I can coax sounds never heard before.
I repair older, simpler analog machines, such as old drum machines. I find
them broken or "as-is" on eBay, fix them, then sell them or add them to my
collection. If you start with a single model and get to know it well,
you'll become proficient pretty quickly and learn a lot that will help you
with your next model.

Playing music with my adolescent son. He plays b-flat clarinet and I play
b-flat trumpet. He has trouble sight-reading the music, so we play
together. It keeps my embouchure intact and is genuinely helpful for him.

Helping my child with homework. I know, hobby?! Yeah. He's dyslexic, so
diving deep into that and learning (and helping him learn) strategies for
playing to his strengths and getting around his weaknesses is exciting,
challenging, and super useful.

Bettering myself. I used to shun the "self-help" category like the plague,
but I'm now very interested in flexing mental muscles I've long ignored due
to my half-baked DIY attitude ("I don't need help!"). Example: How to Be a
Stoic by Massimo Pigliucci. Really good stuff to incorporate into my life
and outlook.

Coaching and refereeing youth soccer. Holy cow refereeing is difficult when
one has never been a soccer fan. When my kid joined a team, I had fun
watching. Then they were short on coaches, so I said "what the hell, OK"
(it's AYSO so it's only competitive in the game you're playing - there are
no tournaments or rankings). When they were short on referees I said "this
is a terrible idea, but OK." Fun fact - the kids yell at the ref more than
the parents do. And these kids are too young to caution or send off :)

Volunteering at a community garden. I know nothing about gardening. But I
seem to have a knack for getting people to volunteer for things, and I've
taught myself how to build pretty nice raised beds and a chicken coop. I
was membership coordinator, so I got to meet everyone, and eventually I
became the garden coordinator - basically setting in motion stuff the
steering committee and the garden overall votes on. It's a great way to
spend a weekend - kind of like the rural property someone else mentioned.
There's always something to do, and there's rarely a deadline for when to
get it done. I also grow a ton of my own garlic now, so I have that!

Re: [RBW] OT: non-bike hobbies

2019-10-08 Thread Dan McNamara
I have a few hobbies that ebb and flow depending on what else is going on.

Rebuilding lever espresso machines.
Mostly the smaller machines like La Pavoni, Olympia Cremina, Sama. Friends find
machines at garage sales and I’ll fix them up and show them how to use them.
Parts are readily available. Nice combination of wrenching, plumbing and
electrical. Occasionally I’ll sell one to fund further endeavors.

Playing guitar and ukulele.
Working on this with my 8 year old daughter. A WIP on both our parts.

Film photography.
I have been down the photography route before. Decided to leave the Nikon SLR
alone this time and use a fixed lens rangefinder. Decent ones are fairly
inexpensive - there have been lots of good recommendations on the list
recently. Tuning up a older camera can be pretty satisfying. Replacing light
seals or a stuck shutter is not too difficult but does require a clean space
and concentration. Then you get to take pictures with it.

Friends have tried to get me interested in other things - stamp or coin
collecting, baseball cards, Frank Zappa records etc - but I have so far
resisted.

I have seen this bike in person and can honestly say the photos don't do it
justice. It is a beautiful and functional bike. The buyer will be very
happy. As far as sale price I think Bill is correct, probably $2600-$3000.
It cost a lot more to build but all that matters is what someone will pay.

I’ve been involved with Parrots for nearly 40 years.
I fly them outdoors as well as photographing them in flight.
I do free behavioral consulting to help people better understand their birds
and prevent unwanted behaviors.

I also have a small commercial coffee roaster, I use much of the profits to
help support an in situ nest box program in Bolivia for a critically endangered
species of Macaw.

Adult play is so important for mental health and often gets shunned as

I play classical guitar (badly), and competition English billiards and

around 1hr/day and the billiards and snooker two or three hours a time two
