Agreed.

Everything you've described - most of which include a different stem and/or bar
design - are intended to combat the physics I'm talking about. My claim stands:
I think some people are putting more leverage into the Tallux/Bosco combination
than it can withstand without extra remedies at the clamp area. I also think
some get lucky with the specific tolerances of their bar/stem and never have a

[RBW] Re: Issues with slipping bosco bars?

2019-10-15 Thread Clayton.sf
I feel like slippage has little to do with bar weight or stem length.
If you want less slip then you need to increase friction between stem and bar.
A larger diameter bar/stem interface (31.8mm or 35mm) accomplishes this most
elegantly. Friction paste and torque are other means. More exotic solutions are
bullmoose style stems (Nitto makes some) that clamp bars in two instead of one
area.

We may just have to admit that putting light wayback bars on light wayforward
stems has a practical limit before the laws of physics takes over. Sometimes
they creak, sometimes we can push on them hard enough to slip.

sometimes when I visit we both have nothing but pie and ice cream for
dinner. She has never done anything to actively cultivate good health.
She scoffs at organic food, drinks quite a bit of wine, is suspicious of
doctors, rarely exercises. She is and always has been thin though, and
never overeats. What's to account for her long healthy life? I think
nothing but good Irish genes, and possibly staying thin? I don't know.
Certainly not any specific type of diet or exercise. Just a data point.

[RBW] Re: Pics from Riv

2019-10-15 Thread Garth

I can't speak to the photos specifically as to the diameter or width, but
the production-to-be Gus/Susie in Large and XL are 29ers, small/medium are
27.5. Max tire 2.8 for all. The prototype large may be 27.5, at least
Deacon Patrick's was. That's common for some of Riv's prototypes, the Bomba
was the same way. The email photo of the Susie had XR2 29x2.6. Trek website
lists it as 29 x 2.6 or 3.0 and 27.5 x 2.6/2.8.

I don't suspect Riv would stock and sell 2.6 or 2.8 tires until the frame
is ready to be sold. I asked Vince about the possible new rim for wide
tires and he told me the "hang up" was literally just that, overly tight
fitting tires on tubeless rims. The mfr. they're working with believes they
have a way to make it easier yet still remain tubeless compatible, which
apparently isn't negotiable with the mfr. for obvious reasons.

I suspect the one piece bar/stem on the Susie in Joe's photo if offered for
sale would be threadless only. It would go directly on a Gus of course, use
a quill adapter for the Susie. That way they don't have to stock 2 types.
Quill adapters are fine, I use them on 2 bikes. They're great as you have a
whole lot more choice of stems, and the Gus/Susie really needs a 4 bolt mtb
stem anyways.

2019-10-15 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I had some cromo Bosco + Nitto old stock cromo riser stem (CT-## {31 or 51,
maybe}) slippage. Not much, but a little upon hard out saddle mashing or
stopping.

I may or may not have experienced the same with the stock Tallux on my Clem...
I can’t recall as I swapped stems fairly quickly as I needed the Tallux long
quill length for another build and the Cromo riser with short quill was a
perfect substitute at the time.

I later traded the Cromo Bosco finding the 55cm too narrow for my large
wingspan (for the bolt upright posture.)

I’ve decided if I try Bosco again I’ll look for the 58cm moose variety, not
just to avoid slippage but also a preference for the style (and to complete a
bull moose trio.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Issues with slipping bosco bars?

2019-10-15 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello all-

Out of curiosity, does the metal make any difference in slipping? If you
had a slipping set, what was it made out of?

Boscos come both in heat-treated aluminum and chromoly steel. I put a pair
of Boscos on my Raleigh Crested Butte four years ago to replace a pair of
Civia Duponts. The Duponts were similar, but (probably untreated) aluminum
and had quite a bit of "flex" in the bars. I got the Boscos in steel
partially because they were cheaper than the aluminum bars, but also
because I wanted a less "flexy" feeling. Four years later they're still
working good, and I haven't had any slip.

Best,
Shawn in PDX

[RBW] Re: 8-tooth spread on QB/SO track-ends

2019-10-15 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I don't own a QB/SO/Frank Jones, but used the same approach as Deacon
Patrick described to try different gear ranges in a more traditional
horizontal track end and keep axle movement as minimal as possible. My
frame also had more limited tire clearance but when using a Surly dingle
cog for fixed with no rear brake I had much more room to work with and no
brake pad alignment issues. You may or may not experience any issues or
matters regarding chainline, depending what changes you make. I'm not a
chainline snob, and certainly still a novice when it comes to all this
stuff, but did learn quite a bit when I first began messing around with
singlespeeds and fixed gear builds and did end up finding some quirks
regarding chainline, such as:

Different cog spacing/chainline between freewheel and fixed cogs on a flip
flop hub.
One of my builds included a White Industries 17/19 Dos Eno on the flip side
and a Surly Dingle fixed cog with same 17/19 spread on the flop side, with
a matching 2 tooth difference on a double crank (which would keep the axle
in the same exact spot in either combo.) I thought I'd just use the outer
chainring and 17t with either the freewheel or fixed side and the inner
chainring with the 19t either freewheel or fixed.

WARNING: Don't try shimming your fixed cog on the hub. I briefly tried
this to get the Surly cog to match the freewheel chainline but this does
not allow enough lock ring thread engagement. Ask me how I know? I
stripped the outermost lock ring threads upon a hard skid-stop as the cog
unthreaded itself and overpowered the lockring!)

The spacing was off enough that the 17t fixed and outer chainring
combo would bind a little, I could reduce this by slackening the chain a
little but then crank engagement in fixed was less desirable with the
slack. I also found that I wanted to gear up a little more with fixed so
my matching 17/19 combo was good in theory to make the most of an otherwise
limited range of axle movement in the dropout/track ends but not so good in
practice.

I ultimately changed the rings around and flipped them inside out, placing
a larger 44t chainring on the INSIDE of the double crank and a 42t
chainring on the OUTER position, which gave better chainline with the
larger inner ring and fixed cogs with the higher gearing and good chainline
with the lower geared freewheel in the outer 42t ring.

This improved a couple things, but then eliminated the possibility of the
44x19t fixed combo because of the axle movement needed and brake pad
alignment and under caliper clearance issues. I'd have needed for further
reduce tire width or remove the rear brake entirely to get them all to
work, which would otherwise eliminate either the freewheeling option (if
removing rear brake) or eliminate the benefits of a slighter lower 44/19
fixed gearing which otherwise worked nicely with my chosen semi-slick tire
for occasional off-roadish detours (if going back to a narrower slick tire.)

All in all I had a lot of fun with all the gearing/axle/chainline
experimentation but in the end I realized that in practice and with my
local terrain I could handle a much simpler 1 tooth difference in a
flip-flop fixed/freewheel and will eventually finish an updated build with
15t fixed cog/16t freewheel and a single chainring plus outer chainguard
(still a work in progress for various reasons.)

Of course, I'd likely be singing a different tune if I had the adjustment
range of the QB dropouts and would keep the greater gearing spread. Best
of luck on your rebuild!

Hey Tim,
Yeah it's really beautiful in person. The c-t is 61, and ett is 59.4 ...
both as measured on this frame ... which pretty much matches up with Riv's
geo chart still on their site for the "OLD Atlantis (MIJ/MUSA)", here:
