I'm not sure what restrictions using Sugino OX601 cranks imposes on
shifters. The issue is usually compatibility between the front derailleur
and the STI shifters, since derailleurs have to accommodate the specific
cable pulls of the STI shifters (unlike, for instance, the "stepless"
actuation of Ergopowers or friction shifters). It's probably more useful to
ask if the specific STI shifter you're thinking of will actuate a CX-70
correctly, and the answer is maybe yes. I know that 10-speed "hidden cable"
Ultegra STI shifters is a definite yes, but other STI shifters have
different cable pulls. Nevertheless, there is a large fudge factor when it
comes to adjusting front doubles, as it's essentially a binary system (OK,
there's also a half-click), so it's highly likely it'll work.

Anyway, the other thing with a smallish 42-28 combo is getting the front
derailleur low enough without having its cage hit the chainstay. Based on
my Boulder All-Road (that has similarly large BB drop as your Roadini)
that's running a 46-30 crank with a CX-70 front derailleur, I'll say you'll
probably be fine, but it'll be close. If you really want to be sure, try
the Gevenalle BURD front derailleur
 (or this
).

It's designed for smaller chainrings
, cost about
the same as a CX-70, and works with Shimano road shifters (although not
sure which versions).

Finally, with regards to the biggest cog you can use, again, I'm not sure
this has much relevance to what front derailleur you're using, within
reason. Seeing that you've mentioned 9 and 10 speed, I'm guessing you won't
be using the extra-large "dinner plate" 50T large cogs borne of the 1X
revolution, and you're probably looking at a 36T low gear at the extreme.
With the longish chainstay length that the Roadini has, that shouldn't be a
problem at all. You may want to instead ensure your rear derailleur has the
max gear rating for that 36T (or whatever you're thinking of), and enough
chain wrap capacity for your entire drivetrain setup (shouldn't be too bad
with a 14T differential double in the front).

Good luck!

[RBW] FS: Frances Farfarer Trailer - $450 shipped (obo)

2019-10-20 Thread Bob K.
Hi Folks,

I decided to wait a while to re-post this great trailer. Need to get the
cash out of this so I can keep buying guitar pedals!

As stated below in the original posting, I paid $652 shipped from Frances.
It's barely used. Save yourself $200 and snag this for $450 shipped (OBO).
See below for more info--don't hesitate to make an offer.

Note: I'll be on a backpacking trip from Monday-Friday, so I won't get back
to you immediately, but I will respond ASAP. Shipping could happen early
the following week.

Thanks!

Original Posting:

Up for sale is my lightly used Frances Farfarer trailer. I've owned it for
about two years, and it has spent most of that time de-coupled/disassembled
because I haven't had as much time to use it as planned. This is an
incredibly capable and nimble trailer, and it weighs in at just under 10
pounds. When loaded properly with the heaviest items toward the bottom, it
hardly feels like you're pulling anything at all. I have used it for
errands in the general vicinity of my house (groceries, firewood, etc.),
hauling my daughter from time to time, and on one ~150 mile tour of the C
Towpath here in MD. Works well with both my Sam (700x48) and Troll (26x3).

I'm selling it for a couple of reasons: 1) I bought it primarily as a
kid-hauler, and while it works well for that purpose, my daughter and I
both prefer the forward-facing Weehoo so we can talk a bit more easily.
Joshua Muir (maker of the trailer) used it for his daughter for years in
Santa Cruz, and he loved it for that purpose. And 2) As mentioned above, I
don't use it often enough.

Comes with a safety flag (not pictured), metal fender, Schwalbe Big Apple
tire, one hitch, and bushing for 27.2 seatpost. If you need a different
bushing size, Joshua at Frances has what you need. It has a few
scratches/scuffs, but no dings, and the cargo "bag" (which is super heavy
duty Cordura) has a couple of small stains. One of the fender stays is
slightly bent. Just wanted to point that out because I know how finicky
BOBs and RBWs can be about their fenders. *See pictures here*
.

If you're interested, you probably know all about this thing, but you can
also find more info on the trailer at Frances's website
 and on Youtube
.

Price includes shipping anywhere in the continental US, but local pickup
(or delivery within Baltimore/DC area) is strongly preferred! I paid $652
shipped from Frances and have only ridden it ~250 miles. And just FYI, I'll
be at a conference DC for a week as of tomorrow, so I won't be able to ship
it until next weekend or early the following week.

Please respond privately with any questions/interest. Thanks!

[RBW] Tulsa Bikers - Experiences

2019-10-20 Thread ascpgh
I lived and ran a shop over in Arkansas. The roadies gravitated to events the
more developed Tulsa community sponsored. I recall events at Hallet motor
speedway even.

We tended to ride our twisty mountain roads and hundreds of miles of double
track forest service dirt and gravel. I’ve been out of the area for 20 years
but back then Tulsa was a fluid part of our region, including the airport
before XNA was built.

I know the Walton investment in cycling infrastructure, in NWAR has catalyzed
other regional focus on cycling. Even though a college town, Fayetteville
wasn’t a cycling mecca back then and given its change and development can’t be
too far removed from Tulsa’s. There are readers from NWA here who may have some
insight too.

[RBW] Hello in Granada, Spain

2019-10-20 Thread Matt
I was travelling recently from my home in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, to Madrid
and then Nerja, Spain. I’m sure others on this list can relate when I say I
automatically check out bikes wherever I go. During the trip, I had noticed a
mtb brand or two I wasn’t familiar with, but nothing otherwise overly exciting.

However, on the last day, October 9, while driving the rental car through a
busy downhill road in downtown Granada, I noticed a very particular shape of
handlebar coming up the hill in the distance three lanes over. “Are those
moustache bars?!” Yes, yes they were. Through the traffic, I was able to
sneak another look when we passed one another and I got to see their very
determined and deliberate rider riding atop a beautifully blue Atlantis.

What a wonderful surprise! I would have so much preferred trying to catch him
on a bike of my own, and in my fantasies have a chat, and maybe ask him take me
around a local route. But instead, I continued driving the rental car to the
airport.

If the rider reads this forum, or if someone on the forum knows him and can
pass it along, please accept my best “Hello from Canada!” wave.

Best wishes and happy riding,

Matt
