Re: [RBW] Re: A Tale of Two Clems

2019-11-12 Thread Leah Peterson
Yes, I would agree with Andrew and Joe on the “Clem could be my only bike”
sentiment. You all know I started out with a Betty Foy, which I still have, but
the Clem’s step-through frame and the long chainstays make it the favorite. And
what of the Betty Foy?

This is embarrassing. It’s...my date bike.

No, really, it is. My husband (not a bike person) only likes the Betty Foy
“because that bike is you. That bike was an emotional purchase - you have
history with that bike. How many miles have you ridden the Betty? It’s just
FANCIER than the Clementine.” And he’s not wrong! So, regardless of how
comfortable the Clem is, when we ride to Saturday coffee he takes his ugly
e-bike and I take the Betty.

But really, a Clem is probably all I (we?) need.

[RBW] briar tires

2019-11-12 Thread Philip Williamson
I have 38mm nice-ish road tires on the Quickbeam. I have tubes with sealant.
I’ve picked up a number of goatheads, and the sealant sealed the hole when I
picked the thorns off.
If I had further issues, I’d install some tire savers (thorn flickers) in
addition to the Stans in the tubes. I think that would cover you.

Extrapolating on this a bit: The Clem/Clementine project was originally
envisioned as a "budget Riv" with flat black paint you could rattlecan after it
got scratched on light poles and bike racks. The lower cost remained but the
dang things are gorgeous, and I never ever once notice that I might be riding a
cheaper Riv. It's a Riv, and Rivendell makes spectacular bicycles. ALL of them.

2019-11-12 Thread Andrew Huston
Going to gush a bit. I have owned a few Rivs over the years and bought the web
special grilver 52 a few weeks back. Other than still having a love affair with
that mustard color, I very much enjoy the way this bike rides. I’ve held out by
thinking the Clem will be boring, wouldn’t be good at anything, etc etc etc.
Maybe it’s not GOOD at anything but whatever. It seems practical and
comfortable which is what I need in a bike. Since I’ve got it my $3K bike has
sat idle. The time I have for rides now favors short fun jaunts, unassuming,
and easy. A few alterations will likely make this my one bike. Never thought a
Clem would be that bike.

I am currently riding Big Apples on my 60cm MIT Atlantis and I can fully
recommend them. I have used lighter tires like Compass, which I love on
other bikes, but the Big Apples seem like a natural fit to me. They're
hefty, but seem to match the feel of the big Atlantis. I assume they are
about as puncture resistant as you can get, and yet they have a distinct
feel that I really like.

2019-11-12 Thread DHans
I agree Joe. I bought and sold a Clem H and regret it. If a 52 L were in stock
I would buy it now. Although I do prefer the first generation green. I’ve never
owned a low step over bike but since I ride more for utility now than
recreation and the L looks like it would be ideal.

2019-11-12 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Until recently I ran 700c tubeless GK smooth tires on my Sam. The tires
are great. Best fast rolling gravel tire out there, IMO. They're durable,
ride great. I ran mine at about 35 psi and could take it on mtn biking
trails, bad roads, never got a flat. Orange Seal Endurance sealant. Quill
Rims.

Both ways, please.
Your build looks great, but I might consider the frame/fork by itself
(assuming I don't stay permanently destitute from our tornado damage).

FYI: There's a Riv dealer who is selling a new 51cm Sam frame & fork in
black for $1050 because he's moving his shop. I think he also has a 47;
same price.
Thanks, RK
