Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-11-30 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Roberta: I am no decorator for sure, but this bike is 🤩 and makes it easy! Who
would ever think a Clem would give a Betty any trouble in a beauty contest, but
here we are. 🤪

Joe, agree that black fenders weren’t right. They would have given the bike a
polished look, I’m sure, but when someone said the paint chips off I knew I
wanted silver. I only want to have fenders mounted once!

Forearms - I noticed because I was looking at them hopefully, knowing he was
gonna have to manhandle the mashed fenders!

Also, I forgot to mention I installed a 50 mm stem (yes, me!) to bring those
bars closer than the 90 was able. The weather has been stormy in our desert so
I really haven’t gotten to test out the feel. But it has to be right because
I’m out of options.

Abcyclehank and I are in the midst of a grip swap; he’s sending his brown/black
Ergons and I’m sending him my black ones. Then we’ll have some harmony with
that Select saddle, I hope. I tried the royal B17 but it wasn’t quite right.
Still may swap it for a different color.

But so happy with the bike’s look now. Can’t wait to ride it tot he boys’
school next week. Hope the weather clears up.

Thanks for making this so fun!

It really is lovely, and LBS Guy - heretofore known as Forearms - did a great

I would love to know the answer to this as well before ordering a pair. As far
as I know dynasis requires about 1.1 mm more pull per shift than Shimano road.
I like 10 speed friction for road, so it would be nice to find something that
allows for this amount of travel to use for more off road derailleurs. If
someone calls Riv and asks, let the rest of us know! Thanks.

[RBW] Another Cork Grip Idea -- And A Devo Flashback :)

2019-11-30 Thread tc
Thought I'd share a slightly customized cork grip idea that, so far, works
well.

First, thanks to Luis Garcia (making longer cork grips) for the reminder
about the Dan Stroud video (Albatross bar more useful if brake levers moved
far forward).

I used grooved, constant diameter Meisha's cork grips for bar-end shifters,
plus a small section I sawed off of another pair of flared cork grips using
a mitre box and hack saw with a fine blade. After installing the brake
levers as far forward as I could before the curve of the bar, I slipped the
small flared grip section on first, with the bigger flare end facing the
front to act as a hand stop. I was careful to saw the rear (smaller) end
of the small section at a point where its diameter matched that of the main
(Meisha's) grip. Also, I cut this section a little long so that I could
use various sandpaper grits to hone the end flat and smooth. Even so,
there was a tiny gap, so I did a single wrap of twine in the tiny gap to
act as chinking, which adds a very small but cool detail I think.

This time I remembered to rotate each bar-end shifter so that the levers
flare outward a bit to better align with the natural position of my
arms/wrists/hands when I'm riding. Of course this requires that you play
around with the angle and twist the grips so that the groove is more
outward ... before the grip adhesive dries.

Lastly, some of you probably know that the handlebar twine wrapping
technique that Riv advocates is known as a form of "whipping", as in
whipping the end of a rope so the ends don't fray. This time I remembered
to whip my grips with the knot on the inside of the grip (unlike the Riv
demo video) so that the small knot/bump is not on the outside of the grip,
and is in a spot that doesn't rub anywhere. As I was looking around for
different whipping techniques, I came across these 2 videos demonstrating
whipping used as an accent in fine furniture building, as well as the more
typical use as a means to bind rope ends ... thought you'd enjoy:

Riv video: Cork Grips Installation

Fine Woodworking: How to Wrap and Handle with Cord with Mike Pekovich

WhyKnot: How to Whip The End of a Rope - Common Whipping Knot

That's it! And now, in the immortal words of *Devo*, go forth and "Whip
it. Whip it good ." (sorry.)

Tom

"...isn't one of the key advantages of friction shifters the ability to work

That was one back in the day, yes, but it doesn't really apply now in a world
of varying versions of 10, 11, and 12-speed systems. The continued primary
advantage of Power Ratchet friction shifters is they're great. I'm going to
ditch my 9-speed indexer for a Silver2 on my eClem L because it works better.

Re: [RBW] Fenders for train commute

2019-11-30 Thread Patrick Moore
I've used all sorts of fenders, from Blumel to Zefal, even though I live in
a high desert region. I've dented metal fenders, Berthouds, Honjos, and VOs
-- the 2 pairs of VOs I've owned seemed to be made of slightly thinner
gauge aluminum, but I emphasize "seemed". Planet Bike and SKS fenders don't
dent. The downside is that their stay system is (IMO) far inferior to that
for the metal fenders. Me, if I were to choose fenders purely for
resistance to damage, I'd install PBs or SKSs and rig up a Honjo (etc.)
type of stay system.

Suggestion: Install PB or SKS fenders, but order 2 pairs of extra-thick
gauge stays (Honjo type) and "R" clips from Kelpie, and adapt the plastic
fenders to fit them; far stiffer than even Honjo and Berthoud stays.

I'd have chosen plastic fenders for my Matthews if I could have found some
big enough. As it is, I ordered aluminums from Kelpie, which are 2X the
gauge, I think, of the usual metal makes, and come with the extra thick
stays I mentioned. I daresay you can dent Kelpies, but it would be harder
to do so.

[RBW] Re: Silver2 shifters have arrived!

2019-11-30 Thread Joe Bernard
Like I said, I think the shifter is designed for the derailers Grant/Riv knows
and sells. The Deore and Deore XT non-Dyna mechs will work with 10-speed
cassettes and Shimano 10 bar-ends and brifters, and the latter can be replaced
with Silver2. I don't work there and can't give an official pronouncement, but
I would think the longer pull of Dyna-Sys would be incompatible.

"Works with 10, better with 9" is a bit ambiguous, because Shimano's
10-speed road component requirements are different from 10-speed mountain
component requirements. The 10-speed mountain components are Dyna-Sys, and
require longer cable pull, but they offer useful functions like clutches to
mitigate chain slap. This can be useful for the kind of mixed-terrain
routes that Rivendell is known for (before mixed-terrain or gravel became a
thing).

Being Dyna-Sys compatible is also good for application flexibility, as
users don't have to be concerned about whether a particular rear derailleur
will work with this friction shifter; isn't one of the key advantages of
friction shifters the ability to work with all derailleurs?

Shouldn't taller arms increase cable pull requirements? It'll feel more
powerful with the same lever, compared to the shorter armed ones for sure.
Personally, I prefer the 1st generation Shimano V-brakes with their
"parallel push" mechanism that mitigates the "brake pad dive" issue
associated with cantilever and "simple V" brakes. The pivots loosening over
time is an issue, so perhaps we can come up with a pivot-less design, based
on compliant mechanisms .

- wider opening, to open clear for big tires.

As for wider opening, isn't this an artifact of the long brake pads usually
associated with V-brakes? Why not just put so-called Cyclocross brake pads
(road sized pads with V-brake type mounting hardware), or something like
the Koolstop shortie pads

they already carry? Richard Sachs commented about manually sawing off the
"tail" of V-brake pads for his CX team bikes, to make the pads shorter and
functionally similar to the Koolstop shortie pads, just for this purpose.

The email did lay out two key features:

- taller arms, to clear maybe fenders over big tires
- wider opening, to open clear for big tires.

Seems like a good direction.

[RBW] Re: New V Brakes From Grant?

2019-11-30 Thread Garth

Yes, a new non Silver brand V-brake made for Riv.

The only references are from the latest email and from the Oct. 9 Blahg
which states : *We might get our own V-brake. It won't be a SILVER brand,
but it'll address a few issues, tiny and medium, that current V-brakes
don't seem to.*

Not one other word has been printed about it. You could call and ask Grant
but he can't tell you a when for what is not.

[RBW] reading orange seal dip stick question

2019-11-30 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I never read the directions, but I use that stick as a valve stem reamer. I've
found that dipsticking isn't very precise, especially with supple tires.
Fortunately the keeping of perfect sealant level is an imprecise science, more
is good, less is probably fine, and starting from zero is the only clear path.
So, dipstick when sealant boogers/skin make addition difficult, and for
figuring when to add, use the force/shlosh (shake and listen) test. Works for
me!
