[RBW] Re: Thin Gripster alternatives?

2019-12-08 Thread Joe Bernard
I've never had much trouble with bearings and such, probably because I'm the
least competitive rider you'll ever meet..I just cruise like a lowered Impala
on Saturday night. But I'm WAY sensitive to how that connection feels and small
just won't do. I want the full floorboard when I put my foot in it!

[RBW] Re: Thin Gripster alternatives?

2019-12-08 Thread masmojo
I find it curious that so many people have problems with pedals! I've had a
couple dozen different pedals & never problem one!? I would expect a problem
for at least 5K miles. I regressed my old Shimano DX platform pedal many, many
years ago, but I was doing 6,000 or so miles a year at that time & it was my
only bike

I do prefer BMX platform pedals generally and they don't have to be fancy. As
others have said the Odessey Twisted pedals are a great buy. The Race Face
Chester's are also good. I've also used DK & Demolition pedals. I don't sweat
pedals too much, whatever looks good is fine with me. Don't think I'd ever pay
more than $90. For pedals & even that is a stretch.

2019-12-08 Thread Sean Steinle
Selling my very early Toyo Homer. 58cm. 650b. From all accounts, this
appears to be a Saluki frame that became a very early Hilsen. It has a
Saluki serial #, and the Saluki fork lug. This is a special bike, and I
absolutely love it. Only selling due to pairing down of life stuff. It's
got lots of beausage, some shellac drippings, and a good amount of paint
chips, which I've tried to take lots of detailed pictures of, a couple tiny
ones with possibly some surface rust? I don't know, but look for yourself.
Haven't found any dents. Comes with headset, bottom bracket, kickstand,
tektro brakes, and fenders. Does NOT include water bottle cages or shifter
housing stops.

Asking price is $1,000 plus bikeflights shipping from Kansas.

Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2019-12-08 Thread 'Paul Germain' via RBW Owners Bunch
Wyatt, Rich & R Shannon,
Just to add another wrinkle, here is how we three (traveling from Richmond,
Va.) decided to handle the transport:
We drove one vehicle with bike rack for the three bikes down to Nashville and
spent the night in an inexpensive motel. We had purchased a $50 second-hand
rack to fit the back of the hatchback on a rental van. (Most are about the same
now, ours turned out to be a new Dodge. The rental places will usually give you
a range of possible vehicles brands.) We chose a motel near the rental place in
Nashville and had asked permission in advance to leave our vehicle there, which
was acceptable.
We loaded the van with our gear, installed the simple hatch rack and bikes and
drove to Natchez. We had checked beforehand about having a drop-off location in
Natchez and there was a small place, which suited us just fine. We gifted the
$50 rack to a young mother working there who said she could use it for her
kids, loaded the gear on the bikes and rode the few miles to the start of the
Trace and began our ride in late afternoon. We camped at the first site
available that night.
After arriving back in Nashville, two of us stayed at the Loveless Motel
restaurant after eating their great barbecue, while the designated driver
called for an Uber to take him to pick up his vehicle. He drove back to us, we
loaded the bikes and spent the night in a motel on the other side of Nashville.
Drove back to Richmond the next day.
While all that took some planning, it worked like a charm for us and was the
main reason to ride from South-to-North.
I hope this helps you plan your trip. It is something of a one-off for us, but
I would not mind going back if we could plan it the other way around and
perhaps make some more stops, perhaps at Vicksburg, etc.
Paul

AirBnB not far from the trace the night before I left). We met back up in
Natchez where a few of our friends live. I did the ride in 5 days, which is
about as many nights in a row that I want to camp these days. Plenty of good
quiet places to hang a hammock, didn't seem to really matter if they were
designated as "camp sites" or not. Would have been happy to add a night and

Tim: I enjoyed it, especially the stretch from Nashville down to about
Tishomingo State Park in Mississippi. That's the hilliest section of riding and
just about every 15 or 20 miles there is another clear creek or waterfall to
cool off in. Lots of trees, great hammock camping, worth taking it slow. Don't
miss the old CCC swinging bridge hidden at the back of Tishomingo State Park,
especially because it leads to the last good creek on the route. Around Tupelo,
you hit the mosquito line and the bugs start coming out in thick black clouds
ready to eat you alive. Be prepared. Definitely take the bike path detour off
the Trace

Poor Tom Nichols. It was a silly response to a silly "unpopular opinion" tweet,

[RBW] Law professor, Riv Rider

2019-12-08 Thread masmojo
Well said Paul.

Unfortunately if people only get their news from Fox & Friends OR MSNBC. They
are going to have a fairly narrow views of the world.

The people who never travel past the confines of their ranch in (let's say
Montana) will have a very different view of the world than someone in Oakland
or Houston or Miami.

I am reminded of the story this week of the guy who tweeted that he didn't
think Indian food was good & why didn't people stop pretending to like it!?
Well, as a lover of Indian food I have to admit I found the backlash amusing.
Apparently he tried it at least, I always caution people that it is an acquired
taste.
In that vein I rode the Clementine over to the Buddhist temple today to get
some Thai street food. YUM

The best way to fight today's problems is to open ourselves up to different
people, places, customs & viewpoints.

Funny you mention that - I also have a pair of Vices (bought used) and they
have been great. They are slightly thicker than the TGs but just as good
otherwise. I always just assumed it was luck and that it was a matter of
time before they started giving me problems too.

I might try the Wellgo B132 or the Xpedo Spry next. Thanks for all the
input.

I've been using Thin Gripsters without a problem, but Rob's review
convinced me. I was in need of pedals for the Clem I'm building, and I
found the Vice for about $35. At first I thought the price was per pedal,
but no, that's for two. So seems like a pretty good deal.

Interesting comments.
Even with the diversity of backgrounds, life experiences, viewpoints,

cycling and particular types of bicycles.
Even though I might have different views in some areas from list participants
I've learned to respect others and their differing views and hopefully learn
something in getting to know them.
Life is very complex in my view and we all are works in progress.
None of us have all the answers do we?
I think we're mostly all trying to figure  'life' out and make sense of the
good, the bad and the ugly of it, the temporary aspect of it, the truth of it
all and what's possibly next after it ends.A lifelong pursuit indeed!
I think every life is of tremendous value and worthy of respect and deserving
of living a life of freedom and dignity.
Alas it's not a perfect world but we can all strive to do better especially how
we treat others.
We just don't know what trials and tribulations have shaped and impacted others
lives.
Of course we are creatures with emotions and those emotions can be difficult to
keep in check at times.
Those times when my emotions get the best of me and my words I find apologies

I like the idea of making a supreme effort to live at peace with all even

Well, mercy, I got a bit carried away and verbose.
A good long bike ride sure helps sort out my thoughts.

[RBW] Nitto Basket Rack Reports and Photos?

2019-12-08 Thread Birdman
Hey Bunch,

I’ve been searching through the archives and can’t find any reports on the new
Riv Basket Rack. I’d be great to hear impressions and see some photos from any
owners on the list, if you’re up for sharing. I’m also curious about cantilever
break set up with that fork crown attachment tab.

Thanks,

The post was simply about someone currently in the news who purportedly
rides a Rivendell, so I don't think scolding anyone is required. And if all
we talked about were chainstay lengths and lugs, snooze. There is currently

Re: [RBW] Re: Law professor, Riv Rider

2019-12-08 Thread Fullylugged
I've found bikes to be bridge builders. Bikes don't care about your politics,
philosophy or faith. You just get on them and ride. Most people love riding,
regardless of the other boxes in life they check. I don't eat paleo, does that
mean I shouldn't buy a Riv because GP eats that way? Of course not. I've used
my role as a rides admin for several cycling groups to broaden the range of
riders who get together to ride. My observation is that people who ride
together accept one another's differences better. Some even become friends.
Those relationships established while pedaling can continue off the bike as
well. When you talk with people instead of at them, you learn about them and
their experiences and they do yours.

People tend to generalize but there are usually exceptions to every broad brush
we try to paint. Almost nothing that we think is absolutely true and
desperately important really is either of those things, although there are many
true topics that are important for us to consider and act on. And it never
hurts to be kind, even when being firm.

I personally know Riv owners on both sides of the liberal/conservative divide
and who agree on well designed, great riding bikes. I hope to meet more.

And let's NOT post something that is going to unavoidably and predictably be
political. JB, the testimony in DC did not include any comments on lugs or
debate on long chainstays, so it really isn't relevant here. Does she post
here? I don't think so. Still own that bike? Who knows.
