*Great*…another premium tire with a premium price to match, so as to better
empty my wallet. It's bad when Challenge Paris-Roubaix Pro, and Vittoria
Corsa G2.0 tires begin to look economical…

Do you know if Della Santa used Jim Allen exclusively to paint his bikes,
because the last two Della Santas (bought new from Roland by a friend) that
I personally built up did not have Joe Bell-quality paint jobs.

Just as a point of clarification, the unreleased Mark Nobilette-built,
"Rivnobi" not-a-custom has a target price of $4k for a *complete bike,* with
possibly brazed-on Paul centerpulls (that are $350/bike). If we can
extrapolate from the high-end brakes, but also temper with Rivendell's
whimsical tendencies towards good-but-inexpensive parts (e.g., Acera and
Altus rear derailleurs), the build kit should be at least decent. In any
case, since build kits can easily exceed $1k, that essentially brings the
frame+fork price down to less than $3k, which is aligned with how much a
Nobilette Roadeo costs.

I'm most curious about what kind of bikes these are, since Grant's post
indicated a partial throwback to more traditional geometries. I'm sure
they'll ride well, and they'll unlikely to be single-purposed (like a
Legolas), but how are they biased?

[RBW] Re: I need to repair or mask scratches in new black paint

2020-02-13 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks much to everyone who's responded. I love this forum, with its
cumulative knowledge and folks who're willing to take the time to help
others.

Laing mentioned Youtube, which was a great suggestion that I hadn't
considered. Forty minutes of watching scratch-removal videos convinced me
that the scratches can probably be removed by polishing, or if not removed
then at least diminished to the extent that they won't torment me when I
ride and look down. Responses that followed Laing's confirmed that the
right kind of polishing might do the trick. Many of the Youtube videos
warn about being too aggressive or the possibility of leaving streaks or
fine lines so the solution is not without risk, and each one touts a
different product or slightly different approach that the poster thinks is
the best to avoid those risks.

I quickly realized that most of the videos were posted by auto detailers.
I'm still nervous about the potential unintended consequences of a novice
like me using the wrong product, or using the right product wrongly, so I'm
going to take it to a local detailer to see if this is an easy fix for
someone with experience. I suspect it is, and it might even be easy for
me, but this frame is too nice for me to risk making worse with my
inexperience. I wish I had a beater bike to practice on but I don't.

I'll report back and let y'all know what happens. Hopefully there's a
happy ending ahead.

Dave

Re: [RBW] BEST REAR MOUNTED KID SEAT FOR HILLBORNE

2020-02-13 Thread David Bivins
For what it's worth, I used the Bobike Classic Junior for many years for my
son. I did not use the large plastic spoke guards and my son's feet never
got tangled in the rear spokes.
I liked it because it had plenty of affordance for hanging bags and it
folded flat so I could carry stuff on it when my son wasn't on it.
It also had a waist strap which I cut off when he got older because I
didn't want him being tied to the bike if we were in an accident.

[RBW] BEST REAR MOUNTED KID SEAT FOR HILLBORNE

2020-02-13 Thread Alex Dash
Hey all, thx for reading. My first born has out grown the Yepp Mini seat I have
mounted to my stem, and it's time for us to get a rear mounted seat. She weighs
30lbs and is a growing. Ive noticed my 2015 Sam has quite a few extra eyelets
for racks etc. Id prefer something silver in color for the rack part, but am
fairly open to the seat itself.

Thx again and Im looking forward to what you guys have to say!

Correctomundu, $4000 is the cost for a true Riv custom frame (base price). The
new batches built to a standard geometry and Grant's color are $4000 complete.

This gets me excited too! I like Mark Nobilette's work a lot and I like
that Riv is working with him more. Didn't like the way things seemed
between Riv and Waterford. I thought that the Nobilette Roadeo project
sounded cool, but now this bike - with brazed on Paul center pulls and more
tire clearance - sounds really interesting. Also note that what Grant is
indicating is a complete bike with Nobilette frame for around $4,000 - not
just a frameset.

2020-02-13 Thread Chris L
I don't know if there is any demand, but I would love to see a mid-size
(mid to upper 50's in size) bike with moderate chainstay length, 26" wheels
and a long ETT length. Like an Original 56cm Atlantis stretched 3 to 5 cm
on the front-end and maybe a little in the back.

Probably only missing from RBW's lineup in regards to my personal
preferences.

Cool. That price is right in line with other top builders like Dave Kirk
and Dave Wages/Ellis Cycles! For example, Dave Kirk's Onesto lugged
stainless steel tubing (Reynolds 953) is right there at like $4200. Dave
Wages/Ellis starts at like $3500 and can easily go up pass $7000 for a
frameset!

Of course, neither wouldn't have Grant/Rivendell's geometry! Lots of good
choices out there!

Good Luck!

2020-02-13 Thread Jason Fuller
When I saw this post I was excited to come in and share that the Panaracer
Gravel King SK is being made in 26" now, but based on your use and desire
for a quicker-rolling tire, have to agree with everyone else on the RH
tires. I think the Naches Pass are the way to go if you have
standard-width rims. I have the 650B version, the Baby Shoe, and they've
been great.

Apparently Ultradynamico is putting out 26" options next year, and a set of
the Cava is what I'd like to put on my Clem next - still fast rolling and
supple but a little better off pavement, I expect.

[RBW] Re: Custom, not a custom

2020-02-13 Thread lconley
My custom is truly custom due to my long torso and short legs - 53.4 seat
tube, 63 effective top tube on one sketch. It is closer to a Rosco baby
that just about any other Riv in some ways - it even has the flared frame
tubes, but it is not a step-thru. So I won't have to worry about wanting
one of the new semi-customs instead. But to be honest, that hasn't stopped
me before, I have ordered two Rivendells (Gus Boots Willsen and Rosco Baby)
since ordering my custom. My problem will be if the Gus and custom
frames show up at the same time.

Pardon the idle-mind pondering, I am home sick today and becoming bored,
which has me daydreaming about a collaboration I've been trying to ignite
between Ocean Air Cycles and Rivendell to bring back the Rambler as a MIT,
tig-welded all-rounder that could hit that $900 - $1050 range price point
based on other TIG Riv's.

To me, there is a big hole in the lineup where a TIG frameset in the Homer

Rambler was (which had long stays for a non-Riv, too). I also believe this
would be a strong seller, competing more directly with Crust, Surly, etc.

[RBW] Re: Tire Recommendations for an All-Rounder

2020-02-13 Thread Daniel M
If the Rat Trap Passes will fit, there is really nothing else like them. I run
mine at 25psi whether paved, unpaved, loaded, or unloaded (Max rider + gear
weight = 200lbs), and rarely get flats despite soldering on with tubes.
Off-road, 20psi does feel nicer, but has subjected me to pinch flats and rim
dings when hitting rocks or riding up curbs ungracefully and too fast. I also
felt some of that squirminess that Benz describes when back on pavement. So for
me the key was to find the absolute minimum pressure that doesn't feel squirmy
on pavement and ride that pressure all the time. I can't imagine going back to
narrower tires than a frame will fit; you gain so little and lose so much shock
absorption, traction, and flat resistance due to the higher required pressure
of the narrower tire. It's why I think all frames built for 650bx42mm are way
better served by 26"x54mm if they will fit between the stays. Disc brakes,
which I otherwise think are unnecessary for all-road bikes, make the conversion
really easy to try.

OK, I was looking at this on my phone last night and on my small screen the
white patch looked like what you were trying to fix; Now I am on my
computer I see that the white mark is just the refection of the light & the
skratches are to the left of that.

Better, I agree it looks as thought the scratches are confined to the clear
coat; so although they may not looks that great they are not serious and
the compound is probably the best bet.

Oh, & the black Sams are sick looking!

[RBW] Re: I need to repair or mask scratches in new black paint

2020-02-13 Thread Pancake
Lots of good replies, but my opinion based on some similar paint and clear
coat repairs to other Rivendells:

*Before* considering sand paper, *definitely try scratch removal compound.
Specifically, Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. *It's $10 at Walmart, AutoZone,
or O'Reilly's ... or free if you swing by my place in Napa, I'll just give
you a bigger dollop than you need or try to fix the scratch with you in my
garage. Utlimate Compound is fantastic for your situation, you can work it
by hand until you get the result you're after and it is nearly impossible
to damage your paint with them when working them by hand. You could follow
up with Ultimate Polish but it's probably unnecessary, the Ultimate
Compound is your fix. There are others, Scratch-X comes to mind. I would
not suggest a more aggressive compound (like Turtles) because they can
leave visible swirls in a gloss finish.

If that doesn't fix these scratches, though I'm confident it would, you
could use a tiny brush to add some Testor's enamel paint, let it mostly dry
for an hour or so, then smooth the surface level to the original paint
using some denatured alcohol on a cloth to gently remove the fresh paint
until it's smooth. This is usually only needed if the scratch goes below
the paint to the metal. On black it would work very well and I'd be
surprised if anyone could tell unless they know where to look and are less
than 12" away when looking. Again, if you bring the paint I would happily
do this for you.

Auto detailing is my side hustle ... with the only issue being that I never
charge anyone for it because I only work on friend's cars from my garage.
I'd be happy to help with your Sam (mine is a blue 56cm double tt) if you
happen to be in the SF Bay Area.

Alternatively, Grant says nail polish with a different color or just let it
stay and call it beusage.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 1985 21" Bridgestone MB-2, XT/XTR build

2020-02-13 Thread esoterica etc

Thanks Mark! Those are some nice bikes you’ve got there too. They look almost
identical in setup, did they both come to you that way? I’ve also got to admit
that I’ve been enamored with your Huffy Racing bike. I’ve been using it as
inspiration for putting together a similar build with a Specialized Expedition
frame.

For those curious, I checked out the old Bridgestone catalogs on Sheldon’s site
for the geometry of the 1985 MB-2, and it lists the head tube angle as 70 and
the seat tube angle as 68. I also found it interesting that the ‘85 and ‘86
MB-2’s have the longest wheelbase of any Bridgestone model through the years.
So for all you long-wheelbase lovers, this is the king of early Bridgestones!
Cheers,

Re: [RBW] Re: I need to repair or mask scratches in new black paint

2020-02-13 Thread Steven Frederick
Yah, rubbing compound and a "scratch remover" polish would be a good place
to start. You can always move up to fine sandpaper if that is insufficient.

[RBW] Re: I need to repair or mask scratches in new black paint

2020-02-13 Thread ascpgh
Scratches can polish out as others have described with less aggressive than
W/D high count fine grit papers. For the possibility that you are seeing
marring of the clear coat over the paint, I'd sure try the least invasive
methods first so you don't go into the clear any more than necessary or the
paint coat.

I've used a very soft polish as a first pass mar/scratch remedy. Had good
luck with the fine material provided in a headlight lens buffing kit. Used
by hand with a rag it's very controllable both in area affected and force
applied (intended for use on a provided buffing wheel with a power drill).
I had it so I tried it before buying another. Other home soft polish
examples are toothpaste, kitchen or bathroom fixture cleansers, Barkeepers
friend.

If deeper injuries or actual voids are present, you can avoid the re-paint
thing by trying a cabinet touch-up stick. The material can fill the void,
be shaped to flushness and buffed to a gloss. I've used the black to cover
brad holes in prefinished matching trim for cabinetry and was surprised how
I could buff until it had the right sheen for the rest of the finish.

I had a black car a while back and it turns out that black paint can be
thought of as a specialty in that field and touch-ups are a lot more
troubling than imaginable. A car body offers large planes of finish and
greater ability to compare original paint to touch up or feathered-in
repaint. Bikes are much more forgiving.
