“Bannockburn by way of Brighton Beach” is dead funny, and euphonious. And dark,
considering Bannockburn’s place in history, which sets up the last verse pretty
well.

The rest of it I’ll have to google.

2020-02-16 Thread Eric G
So, I just bought this frame from another list member that you may have
seen recently (Thanks, Ray!). I was hopeful that it would be the right size
for my girlfriend, but unfortunately doesn't seem to be ideal. As such, I
am looking to flip it to someone else to enjoy. It is a beautiful frame,
and as mentioned in Ray's post, it has never been built up. I mounted
wheels, saddle, stem, and bars briefly. It is otherwise essentially brand
new. Also comes with Tektro 559 brakes. Happy to ship it if interested.

[RBW] FS: 50cm Betty Foy

2020-02-16 Thread Ron Gurth
I previously listed this bike with a pedal assist system attached. I can
remove the pedal assist motor and battery system. The Betty would be mostly
complete, without
Bottom bracket, crankset, front derailleur, brake levers. I’d like to keep the
Brooks saddle (B68S).
Bike will have a very nice handmade 650B wheel set (Shimano Deore XT hubs w/
Velocity Synergy 36h rims, Soma 35mm tires);
Deore rear derailleur; Tectro 556 brakes; VO stem (dog bone); Albatross bars;
SKS Longboard fenders; front VO rack.
The PA system is a single front chainring so I’ll have to look to see if I have
the front bar end shifter. But the rear der bar end is in place.
So, as described, I’m asking $1,600 plus shipping. Let’s talk.
Email is
ron.gu...@gmail.com,  but messenger is ok.

Re: [RBW] Re: Just Ride: wee dram optional

2020-02-16 Thread Patrick Moore
One of your best stories yet. I'm sorry you have no photos.

To celebrate the anecdote, here is a poem first publishe din 1913 under the
title "A Song Of Temperance Reform."

The Rolling English Road
By G. K. Chesterton
Before the Roman came to Rye or out to Severn strode,
The rolling English drunkard made the rolling English road.
A reeling road, a rolling road, that rambles round the shire,
And after him the parson ran, the sexton and the squire;
A merry road, a mazy road, and such as we did tread
The night we went to Birmingham by way of Beachy Head.

I knew no harm of Bonaparte and plenty of the Squire,
And for to fight the Frenchman I did not much desire;
But I did bash their baggonets because they came arrayed
To straighten out the crooked road an English drunkard made,
Where you and I went down the lane with ale-mugs in our hands,
The night we went to Glastonbury by way of Goodwin Sands.

His sins they were forgiven him; or why do flowers run
Behind him; and the hedges all strengthening in the sun?
The wild thing went from left to right and knew not which was which,
But the wild rose was above him when they found him in the ditch.
God pardon us, nor harden us; we did not see so clear
The night we went to Bannockburn by way of Brighton Pier.

My friends, we will not go again or ape an ancient rage,
Or stretch the folly of our youth to be the shame of age,
But walk with clearer eyes and ears this path that wandereth,
And see undrugged in evening light the decent inn of death;
For there is good news yet to hear and fine things to be seen,
Before we go to Paradise by way of Kensal Green.

2020-02-16 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi all,

The story has a happy ending thanks for a local auto detailer. I took it
to him yesterday and said "can you fix this?" He thumbed it and said "I
think so, but my nail is catching one of the scratches so it may not come
out completely." I said that's fine, even if it's just greatly diminished
I could live with it. He put a dollop of liquid goop on a rag and polished
for a minute, reloaded his rag and polished for a minute more, said "I'm
gonna switch to something lighter," disappeared in back for a minute, came
back with a dollop of something else on the rag, polished for a minute,
inspected it, and said "can you still see it?" I looked and said "nope,
you're a genius."

It took him about 6 minutes to fix the problem, which says a lot for
relying on experience. And I got to watch him, so I'll be comfortable
doing it myself next time if there *is* a next time. I brought it home,
put a coat of wax on top, and took it over to my mechanic a while ago. He
won't finish it before I leave town later this week, but he'll have it done
by the time I return in a month. I'm looking forward to seeing the
finished bike.

Thanks again to all those who chimed in.

Re: [RBW] Raid Bill's Stable: Nine bikes available For Sale

2020-02-16 Thread Surlyprof
I have the same model 56 Hillborne. Not quite as high end build as Bill’s but
dialed for me. Everytime I ride it I come to the same conclusion... I can
never let go of this bike. Very reassuring that Bill, with his extensive
experience, comes to the same conclusion.

Good luck with the sale of those other bikes that would fit me perfectly. I
hope they move quickly out of the range of temptation.
