[RBW] Back on a Bleriot

2020-07-07 Thread Philip Williamson
Congratulations on the third Bleriot! I wonder who here has had the “same” bike
in succession like that? I know some people who have multiples of the same bike
at the same time, but serial ownership seems unusual (and dedicated).

I like flared drops like the On-One Midge bar. I think the Origin8 version is
the Gary bar, which I’ve never tried. Nitto RM3s are my favorite, but Midges
and Woodchippers also work for me. I’ve got five bikes with them, and had to
fight my knee-jerk inclination pretty valiantly in order to build up a
Milan-barred bike recently.

That said, the Milan bar singlespeed roadbike is really fun for around town. I
managed to get a magic gear that let me run a single ring with the vertical
dropouts. A gang of 14 year olds yelled, “Hey can you do wheelies on that
fixie?” Another one said, “That’s not a fixie!”

[RBW] Search continues, need to try a 50cm 650b Atlantis.

2020-07-07 Thread Joel Stern
Brad, from this list was kind was kind enough to let me come over and try
out his wife’s 51cm Appaloosa. It has a bit more standover than my 55cm
Bleriot and I could probably live with it but I would like a bit more. I’m
hoping someone within 2 hours of Springfield, MA might have a 50cm 650b
Atlantis that I could at least tease for standover. Thanks very much Brad
for a pleasant visit and your generosity.

[RBW] Craigslist score -- 59cm Roadeo

2020-07-07 Thread Jeff B
I had been eyeing this as well. Decided against it because 59 was a touch too
large for me but could have been a fun experiment using a stubby Crust/Nitto
stem. I also wanted to get centerpull posts brazed on but it would have messed
up the surrounding paint & the bike just looks too good already.
Hope you get to enjoy it!

[RBW] Re: FS: 19.5” Specialized Rock Combo (Nor-Cal)

2020-07-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
I bought/owned a 19.5" RockCombo when they were new. I'm 95% sure the bike
in the photo is not a 19.5" but a 17". RockCombo had a pretty steep
sloping top tube, so the headtube on a 19.5 was a lot taller. We can't
trust the 1989 catalog photo because the bike in catalog is a Stumpjumper
with RockCombo stickers. Also, there's no geo-chart in the catalog.

The three sizes were 22" (L/XL):
https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/16990504075
19.5" (M/L): https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/15773599600
17" (S/M): https://www.flickr.com/photos/skywalkers_photos/18841080699

The first two photos are Joe Bunik shots. The three sizes are pretty
easily discernable by the headtube. I'm pretty darn sure this bike for
sale is the smaller of the three sizes and was called 17". The sizes were
measured center-to-center.

Re: [RBW] Re: 559 X 42-46 mm tires -- suggestions?

2020-07-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. I do plan to bypass testing others and buy the NP ELs; have to wait
and pay my taxes next week to see if the guvmint leaves me enough $$ for a
pair and some tubes.

The Fairweathers -- Thanks, Conway -- look very similar to the Paselas,
which look heavyish in the tread, though you give them a good report. I
used the narrower 26 X 1.25 Paselas extensively, and they were decent but
certainly not as nice as the 28 mm Elk Pass!

[RBW] FS - Blue Lug Shark Flat Pedals in Silver

2020-07-07 Thread Huston
Lightly used set of Blue Lug Shark pedals in silver. Per BL, these pedals
measure 10.5cm long and 10cm wide. While I'm a proponent of flat pedals,
the dimensions are slightly too large for me. Very clean...just one scuff
on end of one pedal. Pictures are available here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10bMTmoNXujLkjJZLdESGdVDD0pZS5dR4?usp=sharing.

$60 (shipping included) via Paypal Friends and Family. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: 559 X 42-46 mm tires -- suggestions?

2020-07-07 Thread Dave Johnston
I currently use Pasela 1.75 (non-Kevlar belt) on an X0-3 and Nachez Pass EL
on an Atlantis and I like them both. They both measure 41mm wide on 90's
style narrow rims 21-23mm outside width.
If I'm paying attention the Natchez Pass are nicer, If I'm just riding
errands then in reality I don't notice the difference. I like both better
than the slightly wider Kojak 2.0 which actually measured 44mm on 25mm
rims, which is a nice width but I guess they are belted or something which
makes them draggy. In the past I've used Ritchey Tom Slicks 1.4" that are
about 35mm width, I like wider than that.

My XO-3 and 2001 Atlantis are set up in a similar way and I guess the geo
is similar because both handle about the same. In theory the Atlantis with
Nachez Pass is a much better bike, but once I'm out on the road it's all
good!

I actually bought non-EL Natchez Pass for the XO-3 when they were on sale a
couple years ago, but those dang Paselas won't wear out.

Knowing your tastes though, you should just go straight to the Natchez
Pass. 26" mid sized slicks is pretty much an ignored category right now, no
one wants to pay for the molds. In 650b WTB and SOMA are offering some
slightly cheaper competitive options if you get them on sale, but I don't
think they are doing 26".

I ruined a Silver shifter by removing it while the cable was still on. I got

at the derailleur.
