[RBW] Re: Derailer Pulley Question

2020-08-29 Thread Benz Ouyang, Sunnyvale, CA
First of all, are you certain it’s the upper pulley? I’m asking because
I’ve never heard of nor experienced a Shimano ceramic bushing squeak
before, and especially after so many remedial actions too. I guess the
rubber lip seals, if run dry, may squeak, but if you oil/grease the
bushing, the rubber seals will inevitably be coated too. Come to think of
it, did you install the metal pulley end caps “inside” the rubber lip seals?

In any case, if you’re looking for replacements, pretty much any
replacement with the same pulley size will work. I like the Tacx ones
,
but there are others, like from Velo Orange
.

In all cases, you’ll likely lose the lateral float function of the Shimano
ceramic bushing; but if your derailleur is adjusted spot-on, you shouldn’t
have a problem.

Good luck!

Hi folks! The parts bin clear out continues. I have the following for sale
(photos here

):

Microshift Thumbies set from my Clem Jr., I replaced them with Silvers.
Used for about two years. - $40 shipped

Shimano Nexus HB-NX50 dynamo hub. Standard 3W, 36 hole. It's about 6 years
old; I had it on a bike for about 4 years and never had any issues. Just
tested it and it works great.
$35 shipped

Clem Smith Jr. kickstand: I replaced it with a two-legged Pletscher, so
don't need this anymore. Willing to let this go for the price of shipping.

Black two-legged kickstand: This is brand new and never mounted. Not sure
of the weight limit, but I would say it would probably be better for
lighter rather than super heavy bikes. It has adjustable legs and swings up
out of the way. $15 shipped

Post below or email emilykguise [AT] gmail [DOT] com if interested or if
you have any questions. Again, photos are here

[RBW] Re: What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-29 Thread velomann
Like several others, I think Orange bar tape on a blue bike is a great
combo.
But if it was me, I'd do a harlequin wrap because that's how I roll (heh
heh).
I'd do the main color of the bars in blue as well, with the highlighting
color orange. My experience with harlequin wrapping is the highlight color
only uses one roll for both sides because I only do the harlequin part on
the flat sections of the bars. YMMV.

The bike appears to have sold over the weekend. Thanks for all the interest!

For what it is worth, I am 5’9” with an 81 pbh. I measured a 71ish seat
height. This seems in line with the 55 on rivendell’s fit chart. It always
seemed to fit me well. The bike was also advertised on the group as a 55

anyway but Steve is correct, as we age our bodies don’t always let us do
all we want too. After 2 back surgeAries and a variety of others I know I
don’t move like I used to.

[RBW] 26" road/gravel tire shortage

2020-08-29 Thread True Golden
I have also been quite pleased with these Maxxis DTH tires.
https://www.modernbike.com/product-2126217584

I think they are about a toss up with the Tioga Powerblocks in terms of weight,
rolling resistance, and flat resistance.
Both are folding and come in at the 550g give or take weight range.
They also make a fatter DTH in a 26x2.3 that's about 200g heavier.
Paul in Dallas
PS: DTH stands for 'Drop the Hammer'
My dropping the hammer days are long gone.

[RBW] 26" road/gravel tire shortage

2020-08-29 Thread True Golden
Also  I'm looking forward to trying a pair of Continental Contact Speed Bike
tires in 26x2.0 with the 'basketball' tread like Riv Bike was selling in a
700c, possibly other sizes.
I have 2 pair of them in a 700x42 and like them.
If you can find them they might be a worthy alternative.

[RBW] Delight us with your 2020 Clems!

2020-08-29 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
We need a little good news in the dark and twisty tale that is 2020. Lots
of you will have received shiny new blue and green Clems at the time of
this writing. I consider it your obligation to cheer the rest of us up with
your new bikes. Stories and photos and impressions are encouraged and
appreciated. Did you light up your world with dyno? Adorn the bike with new
bags? Did you do a really wild color scheme? Are you pulling little
bobble-headed cherubs in a bike trailer, or have you plopped them in a baby
seat? Or maybe you are hauling adorable dogs in your baskets? Maybe your
Clem is just streaking around naked because it’s your new exercise bike and
you want it light. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t have to imagine if you
would post your 2020 Clems right here.

I hope the Sams, Appaloosas, Platypuses, and Charlies will also have
dedicated threads when they arrive. These threads will also be really
helpful for prospective shoppers to have this info.

Thanks in advance,
Leah

[RBW] 26" road/gravel tire shortage

2020-08-29 Thread True Golden
Hey Patrick and all.
Been out riding.10 miles out..several hours visiting a 95 YO friend.
Then the 10 mile return trip!
Very tolerable early but dang, about 1:30 this afternoon it was blazing. Mercy!
Glad to be in the AC now.
Its egg frying on the sidewalk time!
I have Sun Rhyno-Lite rims that I measured outside width at 27mm on this
particular bike, a made over Trek 950.
The Powerblocks in a 26x2.10 are measuring 52mm width.

I think they are a very decent smooth rolling,  not too heavy, not many flats
tire.

Re: [RBW] Rearview mirrors: necessary, effective, recommendations?

2020-08-29 Thread Steve Palincsar
Not everybody has sufficient range of motion so that looking back over
the shoulder actually works.  And not to deny Patrick's experience at
age 11, but years later those aged vertebrae and related parts might not
be as up to the job as they were back when they were young and unscathed
by time.

listening and awareness habits -- the knack of being aware of what
is around you and of knowing where exactly you fit in to the

I won't argue against a mirror but don't find the comparison
to driving a car without a mirror to be valid.  If one has
ever driven a convertible with the top down without
distracting music playing I think one will recognize what a
difference hearing traffic around you makes in situational
awareness.  I haven't used a mirror in over 50 years of riding
in traffic.  When I was in junior high I rode to and from
school on my 3 speed with a mirror.  It served me well when
one of my friendly school mates hurled an apple at me from a
passing bus.  The apple struck and shattered my mirror much to
the delight of those on the bus.  My parents did not replace
the mirror nor did I ever ask them to and I haven't used one
since.

In my experience as a cyclist and a motorist, there is
absolutely nothing that comes close to getting the attention
of a motorist, and almost always a good reaction,  than a
quick head check.  The motorist knows you want to do
something, gets nervous and, in my experience, almost always
will back off.  Worst case, they want to get by you faster and
you do hear that.  My ears are always on, the first head check
is quick, more a signal of intent that also gets my left ear
out of the wind.  The second head check is a bit longer where
I go for a visual.  The third lets me know whether or not the
motorist is actually hanging back for me.  I'm not trying to
argue one way or the other but just presenting the other side
and suggesting that the choice not to use a mirror is not
necessarily an irresponsible choice so long as one's hearing
is intact.  For the most part, I choose not to ride roads
where this strategy doesn't feel comfortable to me but it is
close to impossible for me to go for a ride from home without
being in traffic and I often prefer heavy traffic.

I have toured with friends who use mirrors and appreciate the
"car back" calls from time to time but my experience has been
that I am often aware of the car back before the mirrored
cyclist and maybe the one first one making the call.  One of
my friends is very hard of hearing, uses a mirror and it is
frightening to me how often he is completely unaware.

That being said, one of my touring partners may have been
saved from a very unpleasant encounter when he noticed in his
mirror something trailing him. Curious as to what it was he
stopped and turned around to see this guy.  He was alone at
the time.  Kinda hard to know what might have happened had he
not turned and faced him down.  The cat took off when another
rider then came up from behind to sandwich him.  This is the
most compelling argument for a mirror I've encountered.

Re: [RBW] Re: What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-29 Thread Patrick Moore
And the winner is --- Roberta.

I like the all-blue scheme on the gofast too much to change it, so the
replacement tape will be as close to the Lizard Skins as I can find. The
red tape with sage green on the errand bike is also a favorite, so that
will stay.

The BRG dirt road bike is the one left over, and besides will soon have a
bar transplant and require re-taping; voila, a concatenation of
circumstances that practically legislate the choice.

Thanks, all, for helping me think this through.

Roberta, the orange device on the bar is my K-Light; my Spurcycle bell is
black.

2020-08-29 Thread David B
I'm in a current search for a new 650b tire. I was using WTB Byways, then
Horizons, but want something that geared more towards dirt than pavement.
Local trails around me are a combination of dirt and gravel and my specific
area is not as well maintained than other sections of a longer trail that I
typically ride, so lots of tree roots, some rocks,

I'm curious about the Ultradynamico offerings and would like to test them
out if they're no larger than ~47 actual width.
That's about as wide as I can fit in my Redwood with fenders.

So, anyone running the Ultradynamico tires and care to share actual widths?
My rims are ~25mm outer width (~18/19 internal).

Or, any recommendations for a mixed terrain tire in an actual width range
of 43mm - 47mm?
Thanks,
David

Recently got a Joe that fits me much better than the clem that was just a
smidge too big for me. As a result (and being told by my partner that there
is only room for 3 bikes in our apartment), I have to post the Clem for
sale. I have some other bits as well (bosco bars, 26.0 stem, 0 offset
seatpost), if interested. Let me know if you have any questions!

Album Here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/yS3UTYNWnAn6Qe1v5
Asking price: *$600 *(local sale for preferred, but I have a box to ship in
case)

Items of Note:

   - I am the original owner
   - Comes with Frame, Fork, Headset (bearings still super smooth),
Seatpost (scratched up, but is a 26.8), brand new 110 Shimano BB
   - No dents or dings
   - Plenty of paint chips, the most notable is D/S BB when my derailleur
overshifted during a climb. All have been sealed with clear nail polish and
   most areas are photographed
   - Just frame-saved the bike with boeshield
   - Cable guide and seat cluster nut/bolt is included
   - Trying to figure out if I can modify my framebag for the Joe,
otherwise I would be including that for sale as an additional $120

Quirks:

   - Seatpost lug is just a teensy bit oversized, so depending where the
seatpost is clamped, you may experience some slippage. Current options are
either use a 27.0 seatpost or order a seatpost from riv and have the knurl
the area where it will clamp (what I ended up doing when I owned it and
experienced no slippage after the modification). Not ideal, I know...
   - This is the 2017 run (2nd gen I believe), so the bike is a bit taller
than the last run of the frames.

The Pitch:
The Clem is a great all-rounder, and lives up to the phrase on the downtube
"A tough bike to love." It served as my daily commuter, single track
shredder, MTB race bike, dirt tourer and general errand bike; It
accomplished all of those tasks with ease. However, the most enjoyable way
I had it setup was as a rigid MTB, no racks, fenders, etc. with some plush
2.25 tires and the handlebars setup a little more aggressively.

Cheers,
Collin in "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" Sacramento

Re: [RBW] Rearview mirrors: necessary, effective, recommendations?

2020-08-29 Thread Jim Kramka
I use a mirror attached to my glasses and would never go back to riding
without. I’ve tried two different bar mounted mirrors and found them
significantly less safe and useful. I can look in my mirror without moving
my head. I can scan lanes behind and beside me with just slight movement,
something possible with bar-mounted mirrors only with large movements. And
my mirror goes with me regardless which bike I ride.

[RBW] Derailer Pulley Question

2020-08-29 Thread Litho
Quick question for everyone. I have a nice XT derailer that I'm swapping
over to one of my bikes, but am having a problem with squeaking coming from
the upper pulley. I love the derailer, but actually removed it from
another bike because the squeaking was driving me nuts. I tried everything
I could think of but it always came back. My efforts included:

   - Removing the pulley and cleaning it thoroughly.
   - Lubing it with oil.
   - Lubing it with grease
   - Removing all lube and running it dry.
   - Taking it apart again.
   - Trying each of the above several more time.

I haven't replaced any of the parts yet. It's a ceramic bushing in the
pulley, not bearings. Any suggestions? Any recommendations on better
pulleys I could swap in?

[RBW] Re: What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-29 Thread Litho
It would look lovely with either, but my vote would be for the orange on
the sage green. I'm in the process of setting up the exact opposite color
scheme on my newly orange Appaloosa. I've picked up lime green bar tape
and am playing around with colored shellac to get the right sage-ish color.
Sage and orange is surprisingly beautiful together.

At the moment, I have a blue saddle bag and net on my orange bike and it is
really nice together. My Appa was dark green originally and I tried orange
tape with it. It was okay, but I like the lighter green and orange much
better.

[RBW] Re: Rearview mirrors: necessary, effective, recommendations?

2020-08-29 Thread Roberta
For me, mirrors are a must!

Right now, I have German Mirrors on my albatross bars.

Without bar end shifters, I like the Mirrcylcle bar end mirror, with the
stem pointed down mirror pointed out, so it doesn't interfere with my hands
at all (most pics have the stem pointing up mirror pointed out). The
mirror I think (remembering) is a better mirror than the German one. Plus,
I could rotate it in, so it doesn't make my bike even wider in the hallway.

I used to have a mirror on my helmet and I liked that, got a new helmet and
didn't replace the mirror. But as Paul Brodek commented, you have to be
careful not to damage it when you remove your helmet.

In Philadelphia, they are moving some, but not all, of the bike lanes from
the right to the left, necessitating two mirrors per bike. I might try
Nick's helmet mirror suggestion for my left lane travels.

[RBW] Re: What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-29 Thread Roberta
Patrick,

It seems like you like the themes--the blue monochrome is so classy and
unusual in the perfect color matching. I love the look, even though you
say the tape needs to be changed soon.

The Sage Green with red tape and matched Ortiebs must look awesome
together. I like the color scheme without the Ortiebs, too.

That leaves the dark green bike, a more serious look. A pop of color would
make anyone smile. Is that an orange light or bell I spy on your
handlebars? Perhaps you were subconsciously noting orange would be a nice
compliment.

I like Garth's idea of seeing the different shades of orange prior to the
taping.

adjust combined shipping if I can fit everything in a padded flat rate
envelope.

Tires Available...

work out, but didn't end up needing them - $110 shipped

2. WTB Horizon
 - pair,
tanwalls, minimal use, extremely minimal wear to treads, really not
noticeable, so nearly like new tread - $70

3. Soma Grand Randonneur
 -
42mm green label, pair, lots and lots of use on these, tread is thin, best
for a backup or to test fit in a frame - $25 shipped

4. Continental Contact

- 1.9", ended up being too wide for my frame, wire bead, minimal wear to
tread - $45 shipped

[RBW] Who’s had a Bleriot and a Sam or Homer?

2020-08-29 Thread Joel
Wondering if these bikes handle the same, ride the same, etc. My Bleriot
as many know is a tad large for me, I have all parts to build up my
Atlantis frame now. I put the wheels on and the standover is perfect (55
Bleriot, 50 Atlantis). Of course I am comparing 42mm on the Bleriot and
48mm tires on the Atlantis. I use Albatross bars and find putting my hands
right in front of the curve vs. at the end gives me much better control. I
first notice this with the Bleriot after 10 years of no riding and was
surprised my memory was blank on this, hence I ordered the Atlantis. So I
am curious about the handling of the closest bikes in the current lineup,
the Sam and Homer.

By all means, ride with a mirror. The German handlebar mirror Riv sells has
been my go to for several years. The hbar location can be intrusive at
times but the trade off has been worth it. Have tried a helmet mounted

As valuable as mirrors are I look back if I'm turning or changing lanes.

[RBW] Re: Rearview mirrors: necessary, effective, recommendations?

2020-08-29 Thread Joel

I use a glasses mounted mirror. Since I lost MT Chuck Harris I am now using
these made in the US mirrors.

[RBW] Re: 26" road/gravel tire shortage

2020-08-29 Thread Jack K
Michael,

If you liked your Marathon Racers then you may be happy with the Marathon
Supreme, but opt for the high-zoot Evo version. If you're used to paying
Compass/RH tire prices then even the spendy version of the Marathon Supreme
is bargain priced. Despite the name, Marathon Racers were never a
particularly fast tire and are now an old design. The Marathon Supreme EVO
uses Schwalbe's latest tire technologies and does extremely well in testing
and real world reporting for efficiency, durability, flat shrugoffability,
road grip, etc... Can be run tubeless, if that's your thing and the black
sidewalls with reflective band are durable and surprisingly visible at
night. I'm running the 26x1.6" EVO version and am quite pleased with them,
but they're available wider (2"?) if you need more meat. I've ordered
several sets over a couple of years from EU-based mailorder shops (usually
Bike24, Starbike or Bike-Discount.de) and never paid more than $40 / tire
for the most expensive folding EVO version.

If you'd like links to credible instrumented testing of this tire I can
look that up for you. Record setting Velomobiles often use a 26" tire out
back and every watt is precious to those guys, so there's been more than a
little lab testing and real world experience with 26" road-going tires.
Being part of Schwalbe's Trekking tire line the Marathon Supreme isn't the
lightest, fastest 26" road tire out there, but for everyday use I find it a
great combination of zippiness and toughness.

[RBW] Re: Rearview mirrors: necessary, effective, recommendations?

2020-08-29 Thread Steve Cole
Matthew,

Sorry it took overnight to reply. Here's the link to my earlier thread
--
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/internet-bob/steve$20cole%7Csort:date/internet-bob/f2U8ngMF1go/qOdQDmHWDQAJ.

I was wrong, it was posted on IBob not RBW. And, it's a much broader
thread about safe riding, although I indicate how important a mirror is for
me.

I too have the Bullmoose handlebars, although mine are the B890Rs. Over
the years, I've tried many kinds of mirrors -- I think they are truly
essential for safety, especially in cities and towns. After lots of
experimenting, like Rick Freeman, I settled on the Hafny. I tried the
German mirror Riv sells and really found it wanting. Same for the
Mirracle. I won't go into the reasons here but will elaborate if you or
anyone else is interested. Here's why I like, no love, the Hafny. As you
know it is a bar-end mirror. Inserting it into the bar end and tightening
it makes it rock solid. I won't lose it and important to me, the image is
stable. Second, it's flexible with respect to placement. By this, I mean
it can be set anywhere within the 360 degree circle. Personal taste. Mine
is set upward. Third, it has a stainless steel mirror, which is an
important safety factor as it won't shatter. Fourth, it's unbelievably
inexpensive, $15; the Berthoud on the Rene Herse website is nearly $90 and
has a much smaller, harder to use mirror. The Hafny is easily available if
you are willing to buy from Amazon.

You didn't ask, but I use the Ergon Biokork GC-! grips. They are specially
designed for swept back handlebars like the Bullmoose, which sweeps about
30 degrees. They come with openings at the end of the handlebars and
easily accommodate the Hafny mirror. In addition, they really support the
base of my hands, which rarely get numb anymore. While Ergon grips are
widely available, the GC-1 model is a little rare. Be sure you get this
one; it's easy to make a mistake.

Happy riding.

[RBW] Re: What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-29 Thread Garth

I'll add to the orange-blue-yea. Molteni orange tape and a royal blue
frame . This photo to illustrate the complimentary nature of the two. Of
course royal blue is a general term and there are lots of shades of medium
blues like that. Regardless, they are quite complimentary. Picture a royal
blue frame with Molteni Orange "Mathews" panels.
