[RBW] Sweepy bars, stem length, and climbing out of the saddle

2020-08-31 Thread Paul Clifton
I disagree with Patrick, and without having read the articles, I think I agree
with Garth. It really depends on the frame. Swept back bars work better on some
frames than others. A long top tube is helpful. I climb stand with Albatross
and Bosco bars with my body up in between the grips without sliding my hands
forward very much. A longer top tube makes that position, relative to the
pedals, more similar to a bike with drop or straight bars, where the grips are
more in line with or in front of the head tube. Bar width also matters some.

Re: [RBW] shimmy 71.5 head angle

2020-08-31 Thread ascpgh
Trail for sure makes sense, lower has less stabilizing effect at rolling
speeds but the other variables do have profundity beyond their list
relegated value. My Rambouillet scared the heck out of me on a long steep
downhill when it broke out in a full-on shimmy oscillation. I had no load
other than my small seat pack with spare tube, spartan tools and a folding
spare outside under the cinch. That was on 28c tires and was on a county
asphalt road. Happened another time following a nominal brush of the
handlebars going downhill in a local cemetery in a group.

Never happened again after moving to 32 tires, regardless of load.

The violence of that oscillation is sure memorable. Knees to the top tube!
If you figure out the right formula of initiating a speed wobble, learn it
and never repeat it!

[RBW] Re: Sweepy bars, stem length, and climbing out of the saddle

2020-08-31 Thread Garth

Dan, Your frames handling is largely governed by it's design, namely the
head angle and trail and the riders perceptivity in general. Dave
Moulton has lots of good stuff about bike design and handling. Going back
further on your bike from what you say is only to make it feel more odd.
It's best you read it yourself.

[RBW] FS: TangeSeiki 118 BB, Suntour NOS XC Expert 1 1/4 front derailleur

2020-08-31 Thread Joel
I screwed up and both a 1 1/4 instead of a 1 1/8 on Ebay and missed the
return window, I paid $20. I will sell it here for $20 shipped if anyone
needs one.

The BB I can return but see no reason not to pass my misfortune into a good
deal for someone else. The BB $32 ship, I will sell it for $27 shipped.

If not I can still return the BB but if in need let me know.

Thanks

Joel

Re: [RBW] shimmy 71.5 head angle

2020-08-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
Patrick Moore stated: "Shimmy can be caused by any number of things"

That's true and correct. Shimmy is resonance. Resonance in a mechanical
structure means everything important is just right.

Patrick Moore is also spot on in the way to fix it: Change something and
see if it fixed it. If the resonance goes away, good, now you know. If
the resonance doesn't go away, change something else. It's natural to want
to change something that you can change for free, like tire pressure. Try
those things first. Another thing you can change for free is the way you
sit up and ride no handed. See if your own weight distribution changes the
shimmy. It might, and if it does, maybe you will decide to simply fix the
shimmy with your own riding technique.

Nobody on earth will take any number of details from your machine and say
"The reason your bike shimmies is because of X". Nobody understands it
completely, and nobody has sufficient understanding to look over a bike and
say "this bike shimmies". It is entirely an empirical exercise.
Theoretical generalizations can be applied after the fact, but none are
universal.

Re: [RBW] What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-31 Thread Patrick Moore
Agree that other orange accents would make the BRG to orange contrast less
jarring. The blue Riv will get new blue bar tape, and I personally like the
sage green and bright red contrast.

It looks like Revelate's Spinelock and Terrapin replace the Viscacha, and
at least some of these come in a color called "Crush' for which no image is
provided but "Crush" makes me think of "Orange Crush, and the black 8 l
Terrapin at least does have bright orange accents.

Or perhaps orange bottle cages ...

Re: [RBW] Re: Delight us with your 2020 Clems!

2020-08-31 Thread Leah Peterson
Gill, thank YOU for sharing your delight. Incidentally, I’m the one who renamed
the boring RBW Blue to
“blue-green-shot-through-with-glimmer-like-sunlight-on-seawater”. If you like
it, I’ll take the credit, and if you loathe it, I’ll accept the blame. That
color is beautiful in all lighting, I think. Mine’s from 2019, but I’m assuming
the 2020 is the same shade of blue.

I don’t even think of gender when I look at the Clems anymore. There have been
so many men who ride them - all over the internet. My brother in law is a
former college athlete, stands 6’2” and ordered the Clem L BECAUSE he wanted
the step-through frame and no one makes one in his size...save Rivendell. Now
he can stop ripping his expensive dress pants because no more will he swing a
leg over a top tube.

Bosco bars: game-changers, I agree. There is no going back, you will be ruined
for all else. The problem I have is that ALL our family’s bikes have them and
loading several Bosco’ed bikes is not for the faint of heart. Sitting upright
is so comfortable, and it will make you want to wander. Don’t let them tell you
it’s “sit up and beg” - it’s the seated command position! 

You’ll love your new Clem, I think.

Top tubes...who needs ‘em?

Re: [RBW] Sweepy bars, stem length, and climbing out of the saddle

2020-08-31 Thread Patrick Moore
I haven't tried any of the newer Riv sweepback bars -- experience limited
to original Moustache and an early, Riv-designed or at least Riv-sourced
wider North-Road design -- "Priest Bar"? -- but on both of these and on the
original North Road type I always gripped the bar far inward of the ends of
the bar; with the Moustache and North Road, just aft of the curves. Come to
think of it, with the "square" sweepback bars brazed directly onto stems on
rod braked roadsters, and these with short top tubes and very slack heads,
it was utterly necessary to grip the bar* ahead of the curves *while
standing and torquing.

I think that any attempt to get both comfortable, seated hand positions and
a standing "grip" for torquing as up a hill while holding the ends of the
bar is doomed to failure. At least (a more modest assertion) I can't
imagine it.

Re: [RBW] Just a thought: Building up that 2003 Curt Goodrich 26"-wheel custom as a Rivendell cruiser ...?

2020-08-31 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't think that I'd bother with the cost and complication of canti
bosses and a new powdercoat, A front drum brake would require a new wheel,
but then I'd have to get a new wheelset anyway.

As I think about it, I wonder if there is sufficient crown-to-dropout
distance for 42s; will have to try this once get the Chauncey replacement
back, as that one has the 1.75 front Pasela wheel on it.

[RBW] Sweepy bars, stem length, and climbing out of the saddle

2020-08-31 Thread dane...@gmail.com
Hey guys.

I have a longer reach bike with swept back (Velo Orange Granola Bars) and
currently messing with stem length. Started with a 110mm which puts the
grips ahead of the head tube. Standing climbing in that widest, farthest
back position feels normal. When switching to a 90mm stem (110 feels a
little long for these bars) the grips come back behind the head tube a bit.
I always feel that climbing standing up, steeper hills especially (I
mostly ride single speed and fixed) starts to feel a little weird once the
grips start creeping behind the head tube. I was thinking about trying the
riv billie bars also I know these come back quite a bit farther. I assume
a lot of you have a lot of experience with these kind of upright bars
(albatross/bosco/billie/etc.) and wondering what your experience is with
grips wayyy back behind head tube and bike handling specifically climbing?
Thanks.

[RBW] FS: Nitto racks (RBW52, Campee 34F) and an Erlen rack

2020-08-31 Thread Alex K
Hey all. After much hemming, hawing and spending, I've decided that there
is just nothing like a Pass and Stow rack. I love the aesthetics and
craftsmanship of Nitto racks, but I love going local and those Pass and
Stows are just..wow. Anyhow, I am going to be parting with a Nitto
RBW52 front rack which was used for two weeks, a lightly used Nitto Campee
34F Front rack, and my Erlen seatpost rail rack. Local (Bay Area) pickup
would be ideal, I can even deliver if you're on the BART line...

DM me for pics, or email me @ acks...@gmail.com

$175 for the RBW52 rack
$115 for the Erlen
$125 for the Campee

Thanks all. Hope you're enjoying your new Clems as much as I am.

Re: [RBW] shimmy 71.5 head angle

2020-08-31 Thread Patrick Moore
Shimmy can be caused by any number of things; it seems to be common with
low trail designs built from very light tubing.

Eliminating those 2 things leaves an indefinite number of other things. My
2003 stout-tubed custom shimmied after I changed tires; with other tires,
it disappeared.

Start by eliminating single things, like adding a couple of lbs or removing
a couple of lbs from your load. Change tire pressure. Change tires.

Without more details about your bike and its setup, one can only conjecture
in a void.

[RBW] FS: Brompton folding bike, M3E, Raw Lacquer Superlight frame

2020-08-31 Thread Matt P.
Selling my Brompton, purchased new in 2017. The bike is in good shape, I
am just not riding much these days, so it's time to find it a new home. I
had good luck selling my Hunqapillar using this RBW group a few years ago,
so I'm hoping someone here might be interested in this Brompton.

The bike version is M3E: M style handlebar, 3-speed drivetrain (internal
hub gear, no front derailer) and the E means no fenders. It has the Raw
Lacquer color and the Superlight frame (titanium rear triangle and fork),
which together were a $1050 upgrade. For further weight reduction, I
replaced several bolts and the bottom bracket with titanium verisons, and I
can also include the original steel bolts. Bike has a leather Selle
Anatomica saddle, Ergon grips. I'm looking to sell the bike for $1800.

Bike is located in San Diego, CA. Would prefer to sell to a local, if you
are in Southern CA, I am willing to meet you halfway, so you can test ride
the bike.

I have a blog all about the bike, with lots of pictures:
https://bromptonbicycle.wordpress.com/2017/05/24/the-brompton-has-arrived/

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Thanks for looking!
-Matt

[RBW] Re: 58cm MIT Homer Hilsen setups?

2020-08-31 Thread Todd Porter

I'm 5'11" with an 86 pbh and have a 58 MIT Hilsen with Billie bars and an
11 cm stem (bars at saddle height). I find this set up quite comfortable
and the billie bars allow plenty of hand positions. As far a standover
clearance goes, it is a little tight if you use the biggest tires you can
fit. I have never hurt or come close to hurting myself on the top tube,
riding mostly pavement or gravel, and a tiny amount of easy trails, but if
you have thin soled shoes and 44mm tires, you will know the bar is there
when straddling it, maybe even with 38mm tires and thicker soled shoes, but
I never have had to make a conscious effort not to hurt myself. As far as
what ifs with regard to going one size down, i typically like the biggest
bike i can fit on, and not an overwhelming amount of seatpost and stem
visible, and the close top tube hasn't been a problem, so I feel that I
made the right call, in terms of size. I do think i could fit a 54.5
though, and get the same setup with a cm longer stem and more stem
showing. I think you would be fine on mostly paved roads on a 58 but I
also think you could set a 54.5 up the same way, in terms of saddle height
and distance to grips and bar height, if you wanted to go that route. It
probably comes down to if you are the type that likes the biggest bike they
can fit, or the type that would be concerned on a bike with a standover of
85.3, with an 86 pbh.

[RBW] WTT Seat Posts - Nitto S83 for Nitto S65 - 27.2mm

2020-08-31 Thread Huston
For trade is a Nitto S83 seat post (silver, 27.2mm, 250mm), which I am
hoping to swap for a Nitto S65 (silver, 27.2mm, 250mm). Pics of the S83
are available here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1jMdsCvexcVPzPGVWfelw2tYf9B2urxZC?usp=sharing.

Some minor insertion marks and scuffs. Please see pics for details.

Looking for a similarly clean S65. From a dollar perspective, this is not
a good trade, so let's say that the trade also requires return postage for
the S83. Please send a PM if you are interested.

Thanks,
Huston

Headset installed correctly? Fork bent? Too much weight in the front?
Weight too high on the bike? Lightweight tubing that flexes too much?
Saddle height too high which generates a rocking motion and destabilizes
the bikes center of gravity?
