[RBW] WTB: cheap parts, upright cockpit, crank, tires

2020-10-03 Thread Drw
Putting together a bike for a newly relocated friend, who needs a bike, but
can only manage about 200$ for something, AND is also aesthetically
inclined (i know, you cant have both. i know.). I redirected away from big
box, and we picked up a 1992 trek 730 multitrack with 50% serviceable
parts. Right now, looking for...

-upright bars. something between jitensa to albatross shaped bars would be
fine
-silver stem that'll work with above
-700x40 maybe 42 tires
-a mostly silver double (or triple)crankset

Would maybe be interested in
-Thumb shifters for 7 speed (to go with og drivetrain)
OR
-9 speed cassette. ( i almost have all the parts to fudge a 9 speed
drivetrain)

Budget is very low, so i'm mostly dipping into my own $$ for this, and
requesting your forgotten parts bin items and or generosity.

shipping would be to 90066. Thanks all,
Drew

[RBW] Re: Comparing drop bars to uprights: Path Less Pedaled

2020-10-03 Thread dougP
"My Noodle-to-Albatross conversion ratio is a *6cm longer stem* on the
latter (ie 5cm stem for the Noodles and a 11cm stem for the Albatross on my
Sam) "

That's interesting. I did not change the stem when I first put upright
bars on my Atlantis. The hand position took care of the numbness issue.
The last year or so I've been thinking I needed to be more upright (older
body, not so flexible anymore). I have a dirt drop on there now, with the
bars an inch or so above where they were with the stock stem at max height
(even with the seat). Eyeballing it, it looks like the dirt drop also
pulls the bars at least an inch closer. A longer stem seems
counter-intuitive. The standard was 100 mm.

I'm beginning to understand how people accumulate a collection of stems &
bars. Maybe the goal should be to get your favorite hand position roughly
the same distance from the steerer, either forward or behind, at the right
height? Points to ponder.

2020-10-03 Thread velomann
"I'm going to speculate that he will be back to Boscos with a right length
stem :)"
My guess too. Russ and I have been in communication about the Sam and the
bars and stem - his review is partly what tipped me to commit to one of the
upcoming Sams. We're roughly the same height, though I have a slightly
longer inseam and I'm getting a 51. I'll be installing one of the new
faceplate stems in 120 length with Boscos. I'm guessing Russ will be
getting one of those stems in the same length. I won't be surprised to see
his Boscos remounted to that stem in the not too distant future ;-)

[RBW] Re: Comparing drop bars to uprights: Path Less Pedaled

2020-10-03 Thread Jason Fuller
I'm coming around to the idea that drops can be set up to wildly more
upright than what common knowledge would have you believe so that you can
still get the same assortment of positions but with a more Bosco-like
neutral position. To do this you can run something like this stem
[https://www.crustbikes.com/products/nitto-26-0-bj-stem/] on a modern Riv,
and I'd run 48cm Noodles for the nice width and their well proven
ergonomics.

That said, I vastly prefer upright bar brake levers for better power and
control - drop bar levers are just at a terrible angle, even modern ergo
levers. I've never tried Boscos - my instincts were that they'd be too
"land yacht" feeling for me but I'm starting to wonder if they don't make
more sense than I give them credit. Albatross are hard to beat though.

My Noodle-to-Albatross conversion ratio is a 6cm longer stem on the latter
(ie 5cm stem for the Noodles and a 11cm stem for the Albatross on my Sam)

I also use simple green.
I use diesel fuel for my parts cleaning. I find it works very well as a
solvent and even if you leave it uncovered, the evaporation rate is
extremely slow.

Back to simple green, you can adjust the ratio of cleaner to water if you
buy the concentrate.

Here’s my endorsement: I drive rigs and occasionally someone will drag the
air lines and power cord across the 5th wheel skid plate.
These skid plates are covered with the thickest, dirtiest most tenacious
grease you’ve ever gotten on yourself.
A couple applications of simple green and a shop rag will wipe away a thick
coating of this greasy mess.
No part on any bicycle will ever accumulate this sort of grease.
It’s also safe to use on many other household chores.

Oh, now that you point it out I see that Kai.

Thanks.

I didn't know Riv even offered threadless steerers.

Or perhaps he had a custom fork made.

It's a beaut either way.

Re: [RBW] Re: My Electric Sam

2020-10-03 Thread Sky Coulter
Ya, there was no chance of me going for it at 4000, but by the time he got to
3000, i decided to make a low but extremely polite offer at 2300. He countered
a couple days later and i picked it up for 2500. Which had me thinking that at
the very worst, i might lose a grand in the end. Having owned it a couple
weeks, i think it is a terrific value.

I think it has really barely been ridden before i got ahold of it. The frame is
in pretty great shape and the odometer only had 160km on it. I don’t know if
that was the sum total of kilometers he put on it after the conversion, but it
wouldn’t surprise me. It’s got just enough minor flaws to keep me happy
correcting them, but no major issues at all.

I watched with keen interest as the price was lowered on that CL ad, since
as you know it's very rare that a Rivendell pops up in the Vancouver area
CL! It's the one and only keyword alert I have set. It was too big for me
anyway but great to see it picked up by a Riv enthusiast.

Also glad to hear your findings about the e-assist! If I can't sell my
Clem Smith I might keep it for an electric conversion once I'm commuting
again; my work is moving and my commute will change from a flat-ish 20km
each way to 16km up and over a big hill each way. While I like getting
there under my own power, the time savings alone would be huge!

The ride south from sandy hook is cool but not as scenic. There is a huge
ocean wall that would block your beach view for a lot of it but i guess its
sorta neat itself. When you get to long branch, there are a lot of
restaurants (its a college town) and a microbrewery type place (whitehouse
chapel).

On the flipside, atlantic highlands has one of the top rated pizza places
in the country (una) and an awesome craft ice cream place (nicholas) and as
someone else mentioned Carton Brewing. Im not really sure what the covid
situation is for any of these place but I know Nicholas is open (wife’s

2020-10-03 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Regarding the Henry Hudson Trail from Matawan, when arriving at 10:11 on
the train from NYC, how leisurely is the ride to the Atlantic Highlands
when shooting for 11:30? From the photos it looks like I might be tempted
to stop and admire the scenery a lot, maybe enough that I'd opt for an
earlier train.
And the ride to Long Branch form Sandy Hook? Is that also lovely? Better to
return to Matawan on the picturesque HHT? Or option #3? #4?
Thanks
-Kai

Re: [RBW] Re: My Electric Sam

2020-10-03 Thread Robert Blunt
I have many bikes, two of which are ebikes. In truth, I ride them more
often than my conventional bicycles due largely to what I can accomplish in
an hour of riding in terms of exercise than I can on my conventional
bicycles. You get a very a solid work out without the concern for being too
gassed to make it home. My conventional bicycles, including a Sam, are for
weekends when I have more time for leisurely cruises on the canal path on
the Delaware. I first started on ebikes in 2018 when I was recovering from
muscle atrophy related to accute parathyroid disease. For me, with their
Bosch intuitive ebike systems, they were a way back from poor physical
health and are key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle pocked by little time
for longer slower bike rides. I encourage people to be open minded about
these technologies. They aren't replacements for the steel bicycles we
love, but valuable additions to our cycling enjoyment in new forms.
