[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-24 Thread Chris in NZ
Absolutely build your own wheels. I was sceptical a few years ago but was
encouraged by a workmate to do it. Now have several sets with 1000s of
kilometres on them.
I highly recommend Roger Musson’s ebook on wheel building. Includes guides
on making your own tools and excellent building instructions. A piece of
cardboard from a frame box and wooden skewer make a fine dish tool!

Wait, we're plugging helmets into bikes now?? I'm not sure having yourself
tethered to it in a get off is a good idea!

Hi David

If you are using the FixedGear toot calculator, I found it to be off by 2
teeth when I was setting up my Lemond Zurich as a single speed. Just
checked, don't have a 45 t ring.

[RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-24 Thread Mike Godwin
I love reading this thread. Its great. My first wheelbuild was for my
dirtbike, going from an 18 inch to 21 inch front wheel. Rode the heck out
of it. IIRC cross 2, MC shop calculated the spoke length, stock drum brake
hub laced to an Akront rim. I think I was 14 or 15 at the time. About 15
yrs later a coworker wanted as quick and dirty as possible wheel build. I
re-used spokes from a CA (cheap ass) bike and steel rims. Using Jobst
Brandt's book for instruction, the wheel turned out fine but as another
poster mentioned, the starting position was off by one spoke hole so the
spokes were not parallel at the valve but crossing above it. My second
wheel turned out with the spokes parallel at the valve stem, but like
others, every fourth spoke was off. My 9 month old daughter was helping me
at the time. Many moons later and and close to 100 wheelsets, I keep
riding. I always think about my wheel building capabilities when zooming
down a hill at 35-40 mph (I hit close to 50 mph on my San Andreas Fault
tour) and ... I am writing this email. I think you would have to totally
F-U the wheel for it to be hazardous. You will probably know there is a
problem before it catastrophically flies apart. Hey, the spoke-rim system
has been around for centuries. What could go wrong? (ben hur chariot race)

Re: [RBW] Re: 58cm Quickbeam build

2020-10-24 Thread Nathan F
Beautiful quickbeams, everyone. I've always wanted one... unfortunately, I
was 10 years old when they were produced. I have no doubt if Riv released
this model without tinkering with it (especially in orange), they'd be able
to sell at least a hundred through preorders.

Miles, I think I sort of know the person who helped you with that bike.
You're in the bay area right? I'm a 56, and the orange/canti is my favorite
model so you'd ever like to sell it I'll happily buy--name your price!

The timing of your post is pretty wild: I wanted to post about a
Quickbeam I just acquired as well! I was very lucky to find this one
through a friend of a friend etc, and bought it as a complete. Although I
love piecing together bikes and making them my own, what I like about this
one is the part selections (minus the saddle) are all artifacts from when
the bike was sold. It is in immaculate condition.

The seller listed this as a 58 but I discovered quickly after it was
delivered to me that it's actually a 56. It fits me, but more like a race
bike would which is antithetical to Riv's philosophy and therefore feels a
little sacrilegious. My obsessive nature is fixated on the notion that a
 58
is a better size for me, but I think that for now I just need to let that
go and enjoy the ride. That said, I hope you get years of enjoyment out of
 that 58!

From one new QB owner to another, cheers,
 -Miles

[RBW] Re: 71cm Homer for sale!?

2020-10-24 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Yeah, this would get me the fistful of seatpost that's so very desirable..
and, like the seller says, it would be a custom order now, so maybe someone
will bite. I would if I could, but if I could I'd likely get the custom
it's only slightly cheaper than.
The real question is- Who's got a nasty rusted 71 (or 69, and rusty isn't a
requirement) they're looking to unload on the cheap?! Your beater could be

Re: [RBW] Helmet matching.

I love that helmet! The lights are great, especially since you ride at
night so much...Joe approved!

I'm kind of an anti-helmet matcher, I use matte black which goes with
everything. But I'm crazy about the gray/red on my custom and am tempted to
become a helmet matcher for it.

[RBW] ISO 1" threadless 90mm stem

2020-10-24 Thread Andrew Turner
I know the easy solution is to use a shim and open the doors to all the
threadless stem options but I suppose the hunt is for aesthetics. I like
the look of a skinny stem paired to skinny lugged frames too much not to at
least ask.

So if anyone's holding an old 1 inch threadless stem in the 90mm flavor,
please let me know! I suppose I'd prefer a steel stem as they look the
least bulky but I can work around whatever handlebar clamp size it might
be.

Cheers,
Andrew

[RBW] Helmet matching.

2020-10-24 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I had been saving my original Nutcase red and white polka dot helmet. I
bought it a million years ago in 2012 when I got my Betty Foy. I thought it
was one of the cutest helmets I had ever seen. I rarely wore it.

But this year I set an ambitious cycling goal (made it in early Oct. and
then upped it to 3,000 by Dec 17) and I started wearing a helmet. No reason
in particular, but I just figured with that much more time being spent on
my Clementine, and with the long descent on my route, well why not. I have
a blue and white polka dot Nutcase for my RBW blue Clementine, and I was
saving my red helmet for my future red bike. But my cranberry Platypus is
instead a lovely raspberry Platypus, and now I think my helmet is too red
for it. WHY helmet matching has become important to me, I don’t know. But
it is, and I want everything about this dream bike to be just SO, which led
me to shop the Nutcase website and see what was new there. As luck would
have it, they dropped a new line of helmets called the Vio on October 14th
and with the tag line, “Can you see me now?” They are lighted helmets!

There are several colors offered, and the “Cabernet” looks like a raspberry
to me. I ordered one (free returns) and will see if this is worth the $149
price tag. The vent system has been redesigned as well, which was
desperately needed. This could be a pretty perfect helmet. They are
offering 10% off today, 10.24.2020, so look for that in your cart.

I can’t post the link here, so I will do it in a reply...one moment,
please...

Does anyone else on the List helmet match? Or am I starting a new trend?
Leah

[RBW] FS: Velolumino Tail Light, IRD Top mounts, Carradice Bags, misc shifter parts

2020-10-24 Thread Minh

Apologies if this showed up twice!

A few additional items I’m unearthing as we move. Prices do not include
shipping, but should be about $5 (except for the bags)

https://photos.app.goo.gl/FAoCJqFbVZ737wZd6

$80: Velo lumino dyno tail light, fender mounted, in a polished finish. I
do not know what Anton changed from v1 to v2! Please note that this light
has been mounted/used, so there are some light scratches in the finish, and
the wiring is very short to accommodate a disconnect at the fender. I will
include a few additional disconnects, but you will need to figure out your
own wiring etc.

$35: IRD top mount shifter mounts. These are the mounts only.

$80: a very well worn set of Carradice panniers, a pair of large rear bags
and smaller front bags. these are at least 20 years old, have seen many
miles, are faded (they were originally black), come with scuffs, grease
marks, etc. But in typical Carradice fashion, they are still good for many
more miles

$20: a nice set of sun tour friction shifters, the mount they are on are
incomplete, so you’d repurpose these

$10: set of Christophe toe clips with leather accents

And a few things that I can’t price and happy to take offers on (think
coffee money).

A bag of shifter parts with 1 right silver shifter, 1 random left Shimano
shifter, and what looks like but may not be all the parts for them

1 left bar end Shimano pod

1 pair of downtube adapters to convert to bar end shifters

1 steering dampener (not pictured)

Re: [RBW] Re: Pacenti parri motos vs switchbackhill 48c

2020-10-24 Thread Pat Smith
I like my switchback hills more than the wtb horizons they replaced, though
I've heard the parimotos are pretty supple.

I still wipe out all the time going around corners. Apparently the 48mm tires
with low pressure don't corner as well as the 32mm tires on my other bike :-/

[RBW] Re: 71cm Homer for sale!?

2020-10-24 Thread Julian Westerhout
Wow! That is really a tall bike -- makes my 67-68 cm bikes look puny!
 ;)

A decent Riv-standard build, with a few minor cosmetic issues -- at a $3750
ask I think the seller is perhaps a bit too ambitious, but on the other
hand 71 cm frames are not exactly common, so...

I book marked it out of curiosity, but like Kai, this one will not find a
home with me.
