[RBW] IRe: new Google Groups question

2020-11-11 Thread Ian A

I got bumped too. Now on the "new and improved" version. It is a lot
clunkier in mobile view than Classic. In order to reply to this thread I
had to switch my Android device to desktop mode. It's still usable, but so
far I'm not enjoying the new interface.

[RBW] Re: FS: Fancy Brooks Bags Edition, Velolumino Tail Light, random parts

2020-11-11 Thread Minh

a few items sold, dropped prices on other stuff, see below!

First thanks everyone for the kind words regarding my move, its not a bad
thing, but just a change of lifestyle that really requires downsizing a lot
of hobbies, I just can’t have 6 bikes in a city apt (but if you want to
prove me wrong go ahead and post), I’m hoping 1.5 bikes is the right amount
and I can keep my quick beam. hopefully my last round of FS posts too!

https://photos.app.goo.gl/FAoCJqFbVZ737wZd6

The fancy accessory bag editions. shipping is extra but it should be
between $7 on the low end to $20 for the biggest bag. if you like
something, make me an offer!

$20 Brooks Challenge Saddle bag, black (the tubular one): this ones is well
used, straps are stretched and one of the buckle bolts was replaced with a
nut and bolt.

$25 Brooks Victoria Saddle Bag, yellow/mustard. This ones a bit odd, the
idea is that you would slide it over your saddle and the back part hangs
down, and when you got to your destination you would slide it off and carry
it like a purse. In reality it doesnt really work well as either, but cute
idea, well made.
https://www.core77.com/posts/21021/getting-into-gear-ian-mahaffys-victoria-saddle-bag-for-brooks-21021

These next two were a collab that brooks did a few years back with the
Royal College of Art in London (RCA), here’s a cool video,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rL_3gMvghY=emb_logo

they are so nice that I only used them a handful of times and don’t even
have a picture of them on any of my bikes. Both have a few small scratches
from being handled or mounted.

$80 Brooks B4 Frame Bag, honey brown: some reference pictures,
https://www.voltairecyclesco.com/products/brooks-england-b4-leather-frame-bag

This mounts the bike in the corner of the frame. About the same size as
the D shaped bags.

$80 Brooks B1 saddle bag, honey brown: some reference pics,
https://www.voltairecyclesveronanj.com/products/brooks-england-b1-leather-bicycle-handlebar-bag?variant=8133943066721,

this one is a little more practical, turns into a decent shoulder bag/purse
off the bike. Don’t think I ever mounted/used this.

And lastly a big boy saddlebag, this one replaced a pannier for me its so
big and stable

$140 Berthoud Saddlebag with seatpost rack, older model of this bag here,
https://berthoudcycles.fr/en/962-saddle-bag-gb604-96l-gray.html, I need to
doublecheck to make sure its the 9L one. The rack makes it super solid but
it does add weight. Sorry for the bad pic, I’ll get some more if you need
them, I was on the fence about selling this one

A few additional items I’m unearthing as we move.

$60: Velo lumino dyno tail light, fender mounted, in a polished finish. I
do not know what Anton changed from v1 to v2! Please note that this light
has been mounted/used, so there are some light scratches in the finish, and
the wiring is very short to accommodate a disconnect at the fender. I will
include a few additional disconnects, but you will need to figure out your
own wiring etc.

$15: mks GR9 platform pedals with clips, notice that one of the tabs broke
off and is missing

$5: set of Christophe toe clips with leather accents

Just a note on cutting cable housing: If you already have a Dremel tool,
they work great to cut housing with a standard cutting wheel. Definitely
invest in a real cable cutter if you don't have one. Good luck on your

Sam,

I bet the larger (correct) frame size puts you in a better position for how you
ride. I’m with you, a bike doesn’t need modern bells and whistles to ride well.

My old school 10 speed bike ( allthough definitely too big for me) rides
better than some modern bikes. I don't know of it's the frame geometry or
components. With a 42 up front and maybe 28 in the back i claimed hills
with less perceivable effort... Could it be the frame? Or the 10 speed? It
weighs as much as a fully fendered custom rando bike with bells and
whistles.

Any one weigh in on why my old 10 speed seems to glide?

2020-11-11 Thread Ray
Joe, don't give it a second thought. Your comment didn't read know-it-all
to me in the slightest. I know you were just being helpful.

Mark, thank you for the encouragement. I am worried as you said that the
best place to mound the derailleur is right where that boss is as it
currently can make the shift but rubs slightly and so only needs to be a
few millimeters higher. Still, I'll give it a shot after work tonight and
see if that will be a good solution. Also, I fully agree about the band
clamp being a pain. It took me several attempts to get it hooked and at one
point the band shot across the room while I was trying to adjust tighten
it...

Hope you enjoy riding it as much as we enjoy ogling it!

[RBW] Re: How to alter a shimano bar pod to fit a microshift 11 speed shifter

2020-11-11 Thread Pancake
I added a thin strip of brass in the cable guide cutout of the lever. It is
2mm wide and 1mm tall. It increases the cable pull overall. Alternative to
cutting the limiting section of the bar pod.

This allows me to use a 9 speed microshift lever to shift a 10 speed SRAM
derailleur across a 9 speed cassette. While it doesn't align for indexing,
it works nicely for friction shifting on a 9 speed cassette using a 10
speed SRAM GX derailleur. Happy to mail you one of the metal strips (I
ordered extra) to experiment with.

I have a long post about it in this group if you're interested.

Re: [RBW] Re: cold weather winter riding tips

2020-11-11 Thread Patrick Moore
+1 .

I also learned when I had to ride across town to work on winter mornings at
temperatures occasionally below 20* that wicking and ventilation are most
important, especially if you sweat a lot. I'd get to work with my jersey
soaked, tho' the wool still insulated. I quickly found that any shell
without ventilation will make you sweat even on a very cold morning, and
that layers of wool keep you just as warm and much dryer. Tho' shells are
ok for =< 10 miles especially if they have pit zips.

Gloves: very important. I have a stackable system, starting with DeFeet
knit wool gloves, then lobster mitts, then a thick nylon shells to fit over
everything. I've not had to use more than the wool knits under the
lobsters, though.

Feet: 2 thin layers of wool; perhaps plastic bags over socks and under
shoes if it gets a bit colder (my feet don't seem to sweat and the plastic
does help a bit to block the wind); and for under 30*F, insulated riding
shoes. A cheaper alternative which I've tried is a cheap pair of summer
cycling shoes a size or 2 big that let you get layers of socks inside, and
Shoe Goo smeared over the mesh.

Don't wear tight shoes!

Ears: mine get cold. Baclavas, even better faux-Peruvian wool hats, (with
or without tassles), and last winter, a state trooper winter hat out of
Fargo, the movie. Thick nylon shell, plush lining, flaps that pull down and
fasten under chin, or else velcro up on top.

Getting back to shells: Can anyone recommend a full-zip, high-collar, thick
wool knit cycling jacket with sleeves cut long? Not a hoodie or a pullover.
If it has pockets in back or on the sides, all the better. Just knit wool,
no lining or outer shell.

My favorite thing winter items are split finger mitts that allow for my
pointer/middle and ring/pinky to have skin to skin contact. The split
allows for good braking while holding tight to the bars. Also known as

Yes, they even come in colors on some of the BMX sites (though might be
rear only, so you would need to swap in some front bolts.)

[RBW] Re: cold weather winter riding tips

2020-11-11 Thread Ben Mihovk
I can go as low as the upper teens (if the windchill is not down in single
digits) on my work commute with the following items...

-base layer (top and bottom) that wicks moisture (wool is the best, but I
have cheap Costco thermals that work ok)
-Normal work attire (khakis, button shirt)
-wool socks and liner gloves
-insulated leather mittens
-wool gaiter
-thin wool beanie
-light wind breaker

I'm a little cold right when I start, but warm up pretty quick once I start
pedaling. That's the sweet spot...if you are not cold when you start,
you're overdressed and you'll likely overheat and sweat a lot, which will
make you cold and clammy. If you never warm up, you're not wearing enough
and you'll be uncomfortable the whole ride. I know I'm doing it right when
I'm feeling fairly thermo-regulated on climbs and flats and a little chilly
on descents and when I'm stopped at a light.

Dia Compe DC-750 are in production and available new (with allen bolts for
the brake arm connection for a more modern appearance), and you can
interchange some parts with DC-610s to install them with recessed nuts on
the rear - the stock units can be installed recessed on the front.

I have Dia Compe DC-610 front and DC-750 rear on my Riv Mystery Bike -
similar to the Weinmann 610 front / 750 rear on one of my Paramount P-15s.

You can also get GC-700 centerpulls that use post mounted brake shoes
similar to Mafac / Rene Herse.

Re: [RBW] Re: My First Riv - c.2016 Sam H - Help needed for Newbie

2020-11-11 Thread ascpgh
Different riders do different things to wheels, regardless of their weight,
cargo loads and primary terrain. You could construct a perfectly adequate
or overbuilt wheel set for some and they'd consume them in short order
while others seem to glide through years before wear is enough to consider
replacement..

I remember pondering why certain customers should have a wheel build card
good for a free tenth build after nine stamps. A light rider who rides like
their wheels are the face of a hammer can eat a wheel set on road or off in
no time but a rider who distributes both output and input energies
carefully can baby a set of wheels for a very long time. There will always
be that one time event that kills a wheel in a single strike.

Unfortunately we all have to learn where we are on that spectrum by going
too heavy or too light at some time. Going a bit strong at first may result
in dreams of lighter wheels releasing from the bonds of physics but going
light can leave you calling for a ride or worse.

[RBW] Re: Berthoud Aspin - To cutout, or not to cutout?

2020-11-11 Thread ascpgh
+1 on the Rivet Pearl with cutout Nick!

I met and talked to Deb (the Rivetress) at the Philly Bike Expo last year
and chose a Diablo for my new bike that was under way. The width looked
precisely what I needed after review of my B-17 and its sit bone
impressions. I rode it for four months including two century rides,
determining that I needed a bit longer fore and aft area of consistent
width adequate for my sit bone spacing as I move while pedaling in a seated
position on varying terrain. The Diabolo cantle shape limited that to the
rear for me and adjustment of seat rail position win the seat post clamp
compensated for more forward movement but took me where the saddle narrowed
to less than sit bone width. Had I picked Berthoud or Brooks, I too would
have an extra hundred dollar saddle I liked 80% on my shelf.

Rivet has a great warranty where if within 364 days it isn't right, they'll
help you figure out the next move and trade you. The others don't do that
and it was great it was to have that ability. You can't be too sure you
don't pick a saddle with discrete bias or overzealous objectivity and Deb
knows that as a long time rando and multiple P-B-P rider.
