[RBW] Re: ...and another orange Hillborne

2020-12-10 Thread brizbarn
Great looking bike! I dig the 1x gearing. How many speeds and what is your
cassette range? I'm hoping to get an orange Appaloosa and set it up in
similar fashion, but probably with flat or sweptback bars. I have some
Paul Thumbies I could convert bar-end shifters with. Jason's Riv on the
Radavist looks great too.

[RBW] In love with my new, smallish 52 Clem H. Holland Jones memories?

2020-12-10 Thread Alex K
Hey all. Just got my 52 Clem H from RBW after a long, circuitous
acquisition process. I went from having a Long Haul Trucker and a 1972
Schwinn Paramount to having two Clems and an Atlantis in a matter of 6
months (HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN???). First I bought a 52 Clem H from Silva
Cycles in San Jose, with the intention/stipulation that that would build it
out for me, but it took WAY too long for them to build out, so I was able
to, after some haggling, buy the frame from them. While I was waiting for
it to get built out, I had panicked and thought it might be too small (I'm
5'10" with a PBH of 85.5) or take too long (I was right) and
ordered/pre-ordered the 52 Clem L from Psychic Derailleur in IN, and almost
had them ship it to me, before I realized that it was still in Walnut
Creek, and so was able to pick it up direct from RBW. Of course, while I
was waiting for RBW to build out my H, I saw a 56cm 650b Atlantis for sale
here on this GG and decided to test-ride it to see what it felt like. BIG
MISTAKE. It was and is dreamy. But it was also priced to sell and was
okay with $2350 for a basically brand new (200 miles) Atlantis. So, I gues
that;s how I ended up with 3. Anyhoo...While I am loving my L as a
daily driver, city cruiser, Short Haul Trucker with a Wald 157 mounted on a
Pass and Stow rack, this zippy little Clem H has got me buzzin, and
reminiscing about the guy who sold me my first This Bike Seems Small But
Damn It Feels Right And Man She Flies bike.Holland Jones of VeloCity
fame/infamy. I still remember getting on one of "his" frames, which I
later found out were actuallly Mikkelsen frames, and being astonished at
the liveliness of what I was riding. I was hooked and he had a customer
for life. He chased innumerable potential customers out of his shop for
not knowing what they wanted when they walked in the door. He was a bit of
a pedant, or maybe just came across that way. He drank light-roast
Peruvian coffee when the trend was Peet's and a roast profile that was more
suited to the mines of Chile. He was kind of an asshole, but I enjoyed
every minute of it. Wondering if anybody else has memories of him too.

That's all i got.

Alex

[RBW] Re: Replace my Atlantis ?

2020-12-10 Thread Benz Ouyang, Sunnyvale, CA
Replace, or add to?

I have a Toyo Atlantis with 26" wheels, and don't think I'll ever part with
it. It's too useful, as a Jack-of-all-trades. Fastest? Nope. Lightest?
Nope. Not even close. Fanciest? Nope. But it's set up with fenders, racks,
wide gear range, and dynamo lights, and it's as comfy and no-nonsense as
they come. If I'm not sure know where I'm going, I'll slap on a pannier and
take the Atlantis.

I've thought about selling my Rivendell All-Rounder (with the 753 tubeset)
and Boulder All-Road (with "skinny" tubing). I've even thought about
selling my Colnago Master and Seven Ti Axiom. And I've actually *sold* my
Surly LHT and Litespeed Blue Ridge. But I've never considered selling my
Atlantis. In fact, I like it so much I got my son one too.

I have the same bike as you, from 2003, with thousands of touring miles
under the wheels, so I understand what your ride is like. The Atlantis
really rides its most comfortable with a load. A couple of years ago, I
had a ride (perhaps a couple of hours) on a current model, long wheelbase
Atlantis. The shop knew I rode a 58, 700 wheeled version. After doing a
few measurements, they set a demo up & had me give it a go. Right away, I
felt it rode "better" in terms of comfort, taking the speed bumps in the
ally with no drama. Later, we were out on some local trails, challenging
but no technical. Even on tight turns, it handled just like my own bike.
In short, Rivendell had improved the ride quality noticeably, and hadn't
sacrificed anything in handling. On return from the ride, I found out it
was a 53 cm in their newer sizing system. I'm not sure what wheel size
they are using these days.

Re: [RBW] Ride suggestions for San Diego area

2020-12-10 Thread rltilley
Off the top of my head:

Peñasquitos Preserve is a nice place to ride. The South side of the creek is
basically a fire road while the North side is a bit more challenging. Nothing a
rigid bike with decent tires couldn’t handle. I used to commute through there
on 29 x 2” tires and I could easily go with narrower tires. It is central and
has easy freeway access on both the East and West sides. There’s a nice
waterfall area about midway through and a round trip is about 12 miles with
options to extend that. It’s pretty flat there but you can climb if you want
via side trails.

Mission Trails has lots of options and is a huge park and pretty central as
well. You can hop in from a number of spots including La Mesa, Santee and
Tierrasanta.

Sycamore Canyon runs from Poway out to Santee and is a nice ride. Just be
careful not to ride onto military land.

The Elfin Forest has some nice trails but has some climbs. It’s up near
Escondido so a trip to the Stone brewery/restaurant is good for carb loading
afterwards if the Governor hasn’t shut it down.

Daley Ranch in Escondido has some nice trails but I haven’t been in a while. I
used to ride there a lot.

Lake Hodges is a nice place to ride and can be accessed from right off of the
15 in Rancho Bernardo or from other places around the lake. Lots of different
trails to choose from and fire road riding is there if you don’t want
singletrack.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best hat for sun protection while walking? -- Not too off-topic

2020-12-10 Thread Garth
Patrick, forget the Papyrus, the brim is weak and floppy, like all their
hats, wind or no wind. I tried that hat, own a few others, and returned
many. OR is always about saving weight, saving it for what ? How can you
save something that is at best, relative ? Oh but I digress.

I suspect the Tilley or Filson will hold their shape better, me having no
first hand experience with them.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone tried the new Tosco bar?

2020-12-10 Thread Garth
A Tosco bar arrived for me yesterday. It seems there is a problem however
the ID of the bar is loo small for my Tektro RX 4.1 reverse brake
levers. So I then tried some new yet older Riv shift pods just to see if
they'd fit nope. Then I tried an old SunTour bar end shifter, nope.
(many swear words inserted here). I called Vince @Riv and it seems when
they had the bar made Riv sent them their current bar end shifter, so while
those fit as they are a smaller diameter than the original pods. He did his
best to figure a solution but it seems all he can do is initiate a return.

As best I could I measured 18.65mm and 18.70mm ID in each end. The bars OD
measure 22.3, though the 31.8 clamp was spot on. I couldn't get even
regular Tektro brake levers over the ends without forcing them, so I
didn't. all of these parts go on/in Alba 56 and Billie bars with ease. I
even tried sanding a little of the RX 4.1's inner mechanism to see if that
would help but it would take some substantial metal removal either from it
or the bars themselves. (more expletives)

If you're using anything else in the bar end other than the current Riv
pods, you may be (more expletives).

My last option for now before a bar return is if Dia-Compe's 188 levers
will work, if I can get a retailer to actually measure them with the sleeve
off as the description says for 18 or 20mm ID.

Customer service .. as in talking to a living soul who's not a half robot
instructed by a video screen what to think, do or say seems to be rare
these dayze. Riv is rare.I live in an area where we have many Amish people
who do roofs and siding and build homes, garages and such. You know, I have
so much respect for those guys, they are real hand craftsman. No power
tools or electronic devices to de-ssist them. I always waive to them and
they always heartily waive in return. There's few bike riders here so when
they see one we have an instant connection I suppose. Maybe it takes my
back to the home I grew up in Minnesota that my Dad and god Father built by
hand, it was pretty basic but I'll take basic well done any day of the
week. Even the home I live in now was built in 1856 by the predecessors of
my Mothers family buying it during WW2. Big thick stone foundation it sits
upon. I'm not nearly so handy at such building homes, but I do know how to
tear down a bike and build it back up in my sleep .Most of all I treasure
peace . not a peace that is acquired, bought or sold no I'm
referring that inherent indivisibility that is Life Itself
Being-ness or IS-ness that is everything.

[RBW] Ride suggestions for San Diego area

2020-12-10 Thread Michael Williams
Hey group. I recently moved to San Diego and was wondering if any list members
had any suggestions/ recommendations for San Diego County area. Something
within a 30-45 drive from the city. Looking for fire road/ mixed terrain/
gravel/ dirt, anything really that’s gets away from traffic. I know there’s
probably modern MTB trails that might be too crazy for Rivs. Thank you! -Mike

[RBW] Re: Ringing out 2020, Goals for 2021

2020-12-10 Thread Jason Fuller
Sorry to hear about these health issues, and I don't take for granted that
I had a pretty healthy 2020 which allowed me to put in about twice the
annual mileage I normally do (5000km). I tracked my riding quite
meticulously this year for this goal, and my 2021 goal is actually to not
worry so much about keeping track; just getting rides in when I can. I am
working from home currently but when commuting again, I have a goal of
riding as much as possible vs. driving (it's 16km / 10 mi each way, and
pretty hilly to boot).

Another goal of mine is to buck the trend of the past two years of spending
so much on bikes! Time to enjoy what I have and try to save some money for
a change.

[RBW] Re: Best hat for sun protection while walking? -- Not too off-topic

2020-12-10 Thread MikeS
I’ve got a Tilley R7 straw hat, size XL, that I’m not wearing. I tried to flog
it on the Boblist a couple months ago but didn’t get any takers. I just
offered it to Patrick, but alas he’s looking for something more structured. So
here I am hijacking his thread to see if anyone else may be interested.

It’s pretty big. It fits my 7 5/8 melon with room to spare. It is a bit more
floppy/casual than the photos in the links suggest. It’s a sharp hat, just not
my style. I wore it once or twice this spring after purchasing it, but haven’t
found myself grabbing it since.

I’d like to move it along to clear a spot on the hat rack and free up some
budget for Christmas presents, so how does $50 plus postage sound?

Please contact me at beewak at gmail dot com

I’ve included a couple of links and a Tilley size chart below for reference.

[RBW] Re: Ringing out 2020, Goals for 2021

2020-12-10 Thread Chris L
My goal is to get back to riding an actual bicycle.

A major health issue in January kept me off the bike for much of the year.
I rode my Hunqapillar about 75 miles, all 1-3 miles at a time, but did put
over 600 miles on a stationary bike I bought for conditioning. I went
months riding the stationary bike and not touching the Hunqapillar and once
I got back on the real bike, it was so totally different that it was
shocking. My rpm & cadence on the stationary don't apply in any way, shape
or form on a real bike. Also, I had some (maybe) symptoms that might have
been related to my earlier health issue, so I backed off on riding the
Hunqapillar.

If I get back to riding a real bike, I want to spend a lot of time riding
my 1984 Trek 830. If I am comfortable getting back into riding, I plan to
go forward, at some point in the future, with a custom frameset and thanks
to Jan Heine's commitment to 26" wheels/tires, I plan to go that route on
my design. His recent book just affirms my suspicion that 26 x 54 is the
right combo for me.

[RBW] Ringing out 2020, Goals for 2021

2020-12-10 Thread ascpgh
I haven't had an odometer on my bike since March so I fall short of any
tally or objective to quantify for this year. I am simply looking forward
to more and better next year and wonder how many others have let their
minds go forward for consideration of next year's opportunities.

Bicycling has been my balm for this past year, my hospital unit became the
COVID-19 unit and I have been in that trench since March, bike commuting to
and from each shift appreciating all of the conditions the seasons have
thrown along the way. In the warmer months I actually commuted with my
Rambouillet, stopping when the season obviated its less than optimum
preparation
for full darkness. I've brought it to safety in its beausavaged condition,
I'll clean it up when I can.

Next week I'm getting pre-procedure COVID swabbed for reconstruction of my
shoulder, as long as the Thanksgiving surge doesn't bar elective
interventions. No injury involved, just the remnants of an interesting life
lived so far. I'll be in a sling for some time, they'll tell me after the
extent of surgery how long it's going to be.

Nothing prepares you for having to step off the line. It happened to me in
the military and not being able to walk provided easier rationalization. I
feel the same for stepping away from my year round cycling cohorts who ride
regardless of season or weather, chasing personal objectives, practicality
or persona demons. I feel the same way for stepping away from my work
colleagues as this pandemic surges. My vocational physical ability hasn't
been affected much but this shoulder is intruding on other things now,
mostly sleep. I can't fall asleep for long before relaxed muscles lets
alignment sag and the cold steel jabs of pain shock me awake. It's what got
the orthopedist's attention and an MRI ordered. it's a mess.

I'm going to be back to having my bike in the room as an icon of luck and
motivation to get through post-op and rehab. I have other good hands in the
house for support through this, including a new nurse, so I don't feel so
obtuse looking forward to getting back on track and having riding goals by
spring.

Bill, great bike! Tandem Riv with discs makes sense.

 Bill,

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on how that hydraulic
lever/caliper works as a tandem brake compared to a drag brake set up. My
HHH has a Paul Klamper linked to a DuraAce bar-end shifter on the stoker's
bosco end. The captain's controls are XTR V-brakes like yours. My stokers
are used to actuating an Arai drum brake with a friction shifter, so my
thinking was that setting up the HHH with a drag function, rather than
 with
a traditional lever, would be most similar. In practice, that has held
 only
somewhat true because the efficiency of the Klamper is exponentially
greater than a drum; my 4-year old delights in testing the friction
threshold of the rear tire using the Klamper, a feat the Arai drum brake
could never accomplish even with herculean effort. The Klamper/bar-end
set-up works like a dream on long descents because it can be set and stay
on for minutes, if necessary, just like the old Arai drum.

Do you prefer to have the stoker feather the rear disc brake rather
than have the Captain feather using the V-brakes? How do you handle this
with communication/commands? Generally, I go with, "brake on", "more",
"good", and "brake off". The stoker brake then is only used for drag
applications, never feathered or for short bursts. Thus, I have no
experience Captaining with a Stoker who has a traditional brake lever.

 Cheers,
 Patrick

Between mourning a lost loved one and channelling the grief into personal
accomplishment, you earn most heartfelt sympathy, deepest respect and
recognition. A good job Leah. You set an example for your family and all of

[RBW] Re: Hi & Questions...

2020-12-10 Thread Ed Carolipio
Hi Phillip,

Welcome to the group. There was a long conversion on this topic a couple of
years back and, based on what Sam owners say and your preferences, the Sam
(most recent one with the cantis) would be optimal. The cantis give you the
option to run wider tires (with or without lugs, with or without fenders)
relative to the Homer while the Joe geo is better suited to an upright
handlebar. (Folks do run Joes with a drop bar: just need a stubby stem.) If
you're worried about the cargo carrying capability of the Sam vs the Joe,
Sam owners universally say that's not a problem unless you decide to go on
an extended bike tour. I've owned a Joe and currently have a Homer.

One caveat on the selection is sizing. Riv bike sizing has wide gaps which
don't necessary line up on PBH across different models. As a guess, maybe
that's why Riv suggested the Joe? I'd recommend spending a little time on
the geometry charts between the Sam and Joe for your PBH, and if you can
imagine how your riding position would be using a bike you already own.

Good luck,
