[RBW] Re: Friction 1x11

2021-01-11 Thread Adam in Indiana
I’ve been using 1x11 for a while, in both friction and indexed. I use an
appropriate Microshift lever with a Shimano SLX clutch derailleur, and it
works flawlessly. I started it out as a bar-end, but now have it on a
hydraulic Gevenalle setup.

Re: [RBW] FS: Copenhagen Wheel $1,100

2021-01-11 Thread Patrick Moore
I'd be interested if I hadn't just spent a large amount (a *really* large
amount!) on another SA hub.

I think Joe Bernard uses one of these? Or else, someone else on this list?
I'll be interested to hear how they perform -- ease of use, reliability,
range, degree of control, etc., as well as how they compare to other
electrification products.

Re: [RBW] Wheel Pull on My Toyo Atlantis?

2021-01-11 Thread Mark Roland
It can be tricky to get the headset right. This may be partly because of
the spacer used on the Clems with a traditional 1" headset to get more
stack height from the fork steerer. Based on your description of the bike's
behavior, I would suspect a headset that is a bit too tight.

Re: [RBW] Re: Weight question / I'm obviously confused

2021-01-11 Thread dougP
Perhaps this point is obvious to some but it just occurred to me. A
manufacturer must design the bike for intended use (touring, racing, etc.)
so that's one major influence on tubing choice & geometry. For production
bikes (as opposed to customs), the design must also address maximum load,
including rider. Brendon's observation (above) about the change in
handling over the course of his mail delivery day is an excellent example.
For example the 59 cm Clem H may be ridden by riders from say 180 lbs (or
less?) up to 220 lbs (or more?). Throw a reasonable expectation of load
carrying of 30 lbs, and the frame must feel secure at a total weight of 250
lbs. If the 180 lb rider rides it with no load, it will feel a great
stiffer than the 220 lb rider with some load. This puts the designer /
manufacturer in the quandry of over-building to handling heaviest expected
load and under-building to provide a good ride for the lightest situation.
My guess is the design must always be a compromise to be not overly stiff
or overly noodly.

[RBW] FS: Copenhagen Wheel $1,100

2021-01-11 Thread maxcr
Up for sale my almost new Copenhagen Wheel from Superpedestrian - the app
says I only logged 68 miles on it for the less than one year since I bought
it.

I had big plans for my electrified Atlantis, but to be honest with Covid my
commute was gone and I ended up riding other bikes more. On top of that I
moved to a new place where I can't roll my bike into a safe storage and
bringing the bike down the stairs to the basement isn't very functional.

It retails for $1,749 but you can have it for $1,100 plus shipping.

Size 622mm / 700c / 29er
Road gearing (11X28)
Rim Silver

[RBW] Re: Completing the Rivendell catalog archive

2021-01-11 Thread Eric Marth
After some research and consultation with John Bennett I have determined
(decided?) that the collection of Rivendell catalogs I posted is indeed a
full run. In looking at completed auctions, blog posts and completed sales
including Bike Tinker's "Rivendell Propaganda" post and sale as well as the
Bike Recyclery Riv/Bstone lot, I can't find evidence of catalogs that I
don't have.

There are some numbering irregularities that lead to a bit of confusion.
The second catalog is labeled Number 3. And it seems the count was lost
somewhere along the line. While the most recent catalog is "The twentieth
catalog," there are only 18 total catalogs. If you consider my pictures of
the catalog run you can disregard the 2018 frames catalog (horizontal
layout, illustrated cover).

Thanks to all for the help and if anyone has information to contribute or
theories to disprove please let me know.

I have a pipe like that (slightly shorter) to use as a cheater bar.

I have the same pbh and bought a 52 Clem H that was on sale. It was too
small though I fit the theoretical range. I should have gotten the 59. I
support the suggestions of better tires/lower pressure. I think you'll
 feel
a big difference. I really liked the Clem other than the sizing.

[RBW] Re: Dual tail lights

2021-01-11 Thread Patrick Moore
And I forgot to ask my question: I hear that there are metal zip ties. I
don't think that the ~ 4mm plastic one holding the Secula to the stay is
going to break soon, but perhaps a metal one could be pulled a bit tighter
without that risk.

Can one find say 5 mm metal zip ties that cinch things up very tight? The
Secula is designed to be attached with a zip tie, with a rubber shoulder
where it contacts the stay, and I further wrapped a small piece of
innertube around the stay for more grip.

Advice, and source/s?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Found Wheel in Seattle

2021-01-11 Thread Mark Roland
When Rich first posted, I was going to surmise that the wheel fell off a
bike that was on a car rack. But then my internet connection went down and
I forgot. Last weekend I drove off with my favorite winter boots on the top
of my car. (I was planning to ride in them, but I don't like operating
clutch, brake, gas with them. ) When I reached my destination and realized
what I had done, I texted a friend who went and found them. They were
neatly together at the curb about a half mile from my house. Picked up and
placed there by a shoemaritan, no doubt.

The condition is new. But I'm feeling it when the basket is loaded and when

I'll give the headset a check.

Is the basket business new?  If not, is this condition new, or have you
always felt it when you have a load in the basket? (Unless you have an
exceptionally heavy basket, you really shouldn't be noticing anything in
your steering from that weight.)

And then I'll try Steve's advice and just inflate the front tire more.
Not sure, though, how to tell if the headset is bad. At least it
doesn't /feel/ bad.

There's an easy quick test for headset too loose -- lock front brake,
rock bike forward, if you feel klunk klunk or movement, headset is too
loose.  Too tight you can sometimes find by lifting front wheel off the
ground, move bars back and forth from side to side, see if you feel
binding, but often for me this has been a "go to a good bike shop" issue.

What inflation pressure are you using now?   What does the BQ

Or maybe my headset is over tightened?

Or a bad headset?  Maybe my personal experience is biasing me

caused steering issues.

But when I turn, I often feel pulled more than is natural or I
experience on other bikes - like the wheel wants to make a sharp
left turn, when I intend/want a much milder angle. The attached
picture shows the bike as currently set up. Other possible
culprits include: the front rack (pass & stow), perhaps the
stubby stem (50mm)--and always (and maybe most likely) user error.

[RBW] Re: Wheel Pull on My Toyo Atlantis?

2021-01-11 Thread Collin A
Hey Andrew,

I had a similar feeling when I had my Clem with a P rack with a heavy
basket load...took some effort to manage the steering and didn't feel the
same. Issue was resolved when I put less weight up front (during camping,
it meant the sleeping setup) and switched to a smaller surly 8-pack
rack...no ideas if the weight was any different, but it did make it less
"twitchy." I can't comment on the GK tires, but I have had some self steer
issues when using too-big-a-tire at too-low-a-pressure as well.

Cheers,
Collin, in Sacramento

[RBW] Re: Anything / Cargo Cage mounted to seat stays or fork braze-ons?

2021-01-11 Thread Collin A
Hey,

The front mounts won't work thanks to the spacing. The rear will be tricky
because the seat stays aren't in line with the bolt faces (i.e. eyelets are
perpendicular to the center-line of the frame, but are about 1-3 cm
laterally offset)...spacing isn't also perfectly set, and you have to deal
with m5 and m6 bolts.

You might be able to get something to work by using the b-rad cage adapters
from wolftooth (the really long ones). Another option is to use those king
cage USB adapters for the seat stay and bolt one of the cage holes to it,
either way, not a particularly elegant solution, and neither of these are
recommended for the fork I believe...

Also, look at this rack if you are trying to find the 3-pack mounts and
still be light-ish (I think 500-ish grams?). You also get a saddle bag
carrier! http://www.tumbleweed.cc/store/t-rack

In summary, it'd be a lot of work, and you are probably best with using
bags with minimal supports like the caradice , etc. if you want to reduce
the dead weight on your frame.

Cheers,
Collin in Sacramento

Re: [RBW] Re: Weight question / I'm obviously confused

2021-01-11 Thread Mark Roland
If you are going to talk about the flexing of a Rivendell, built from
fairly sturdy OS tubing, I think going from a 59cm 700c diamond frame to a
52cm 650b diamond frame will affect flex characteristics more than
strapping a pipe to the top tube. Extra weight can definitely induce flex,
but usually of the undesirable kind. But it also affects steering input and
ride feel, depending on where it is on the bike.

I believe the Clem Smith Jr. is designed in a way that you don't need to
load it down to get a good ride feel. I have light and flexy bikes, 531
and Tange Prestige, had a custom L'Avecaise with skinny thinny top tube.
While they certainly ride differently than my 650B 52cm Clem L and my 700c
56cm Susie, I would not describe either of the Rivs as lumbering, even in
comparison. Of course the 2.6" Honchos on the Susie are slower on the road
than the 48mm Switchback Hills on *El Clem*. And while I agree handlebars
can contribute to how we respond to a bicycle, I love getting up out of the
saddle on my Clem and grabbing tight to the Hunt-Wilde finger grips on my
Bullmoose Boscos to sprint over a small rise, or jam up the last meters of
a hill. Every bit as satisfying as sprinting on a 531 frame with Maes
parallel drop bars! On the other hand, the VO Klunker bars on the Susie are
set just a tad too high to be conducive to an out of the saddle full
wattage effort. But they have other redeeming qualities!
