Adding my 2 cents to Bill's, offers - whether complete or any other version
- should be addressed privately to the seller.

Re: [RBW] What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-09 Thread Hugh Smitham
As a seller on eBay I got burned. Sold a Sony camera and shipped to an
address the buyer requested. It turned out that eBay recommends never send
a package to any address other than the one on the eBay buyers account. The
buyer paid via CC through PayPal and opened a claim that they never bought
the item. eBay washed their hands of it since as far as they were concerned
the transaction was successfully completed. It went to PayPal and the
credit card company for an investigation. After 30 days the CC company
ruled in favor of the CC holder claiming it was fraud. As the seller I lost
close to a thousand. At the time I was a infrequent seller and really
wasn't versed in the intricacies of the eBay market place. I haven't sold
anything on eBay since.

I think in this age it's Buyer and seller beware. There are scoundrel's on
both sides of the fence.

In terms of this and the iBoB group I have never had a bad experience. I
hope that remains the case. I have always offered PayPal as the method of
payment with a friends and family designation believing we are on the honor
system and saving folks some money. If a buyer want the G protection than
I'll pass that fee onto them.

My .02 I think selling a bike as a F/F/HS is much easier. People get to
build up the bike the way they want and the seller has an easier time
packing, plus shipping is generally less expensive.

2021-03-09 Thread aeroperf
I run Velocity Atlas rims (on my Sam) and Velocity Dyad rims (on my
tourer). I do mostly pavement riding.
I’ve run Continental Speed Ride tires for 5 years. I haven’t had a flat
with them, ever (though that's probably just luck). I run them at 50 psi.
They only come in one size - 622 x 42. They cost about $25. My last set
went 5000 miles.

Try them. For the price, if you don’t like them you can pitch them without
remorse. But they certainly work for me.

David: Thanks for the measurement; that is narrow, tho' my rims are 35/27
instead of the (I think) 24/20 or so of the Dyads. Still, probably narrower
even on the wider rims, tho' if anyone can correct me, please do so.

I'll be interested to hear, about the Oracle Ridge, how wide it actually is
on your Quills (24.5/21, I see), *and* how well they roll on pavement

Garth: This is why I want tires in the more-or-less >42mm (but less than
50 mm, since I've tried 50s) range. 45 is what I'd like to try.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for 44-46 mm 700c all rounder tires, must roll well on pavement?

2021-03-09 Thread Garth
My only comment is about running much smaller tires on bikes with larger
tires in mind @ design stage. I've ridden 36-38mm tires on my Bombadil and
didn't like how it handled at all, the steering. With the full bodied
"Rosie" Schwalbe Big Ben 50's(47+mm) , it felt like a different bike. I
can't say that'd be the case with your Mathews though as you're the one
riding it.

2021-03-09 Thread David Person
I have a pair of Snoqualmie mounted on Velocity Dyad rims. They measure
out at 41mm wide. I have the standard casing version. I switched to these
in the fall from a pair Barlow Pass ELs that I rode for 5 years before the
tread on the rear started getting a bit thin. To be honest, I can't tell a
difference in riding quality between the standard and EL casing, so I'd say
save your money and get the standard casing version. I run them with tubes
(Dyads are not tubeless compatible) and for extra protection against
goatheads here in So.Cal. I use a set of Mr Tuffy's, which don't seem to
affect the ride quality.

I have a set of Oracle Ridge mounted on Velocity Quill rims that I built up
for a new bike build but have not yet ridden them. They measure 46mm wide.

Welcome Josh, from another orange Rivendell rider in Pittsburgh. I usually
commute year round east end to CHP but have been off all winter following
some non-bike related shoulder surgery.

I'll contribute to finding some non-commuting rides this spring as I get
back on the bike. It's bountiful and always possible to provide fun day or

[RBW] Recommendations for 44-46 mm 700c all rounder tires, must roll well on pavement?

2021-03-09 Thread Patrick Moore
The Matthews is a duck without a pond and I am trying to find new ponds for
it by swapping tires. Background: The Matthews was built expressly as a
bike set up as a road bike that can take 60s and fenders for our sand. Now
that I have the 3" WTB Rangers on the Monocog, the Matthews is out of a job.

But perhaps some narrower tires would make the handling more, well, more
Rivendell like; perhaps worth the cost of a new pair.

So, what do you recommend for 44-46 actual that are excellent on pavement
but that do well in light dirt?

I guess the Snoqualmie Pass would be the benchmark, and I assume they roll
superlatively on pavement, so tell me you experience with these on dirt.
I'd buy the ELs.

WTB Raddler or the apparently very similar Riddler? Resolute? Venture? Has
anyone used any of these and say how well they roll on pavement and firmer
dirt?

Perhaps the RH Oracle Ridge rides well enough on pavement and runs a bit
small? Tell me your pavement experience with these.

And tell me of other options.

Or doers anyone want to trade for a quality ss 29er frameset that will take
3.0"s with a bit of spare room? I ride a Medium in earlier Fargos and
Monocogs.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: In search of brass ferrules

2021-03-09 Thread Garth
I believe those shops are part of a common online template and or network,
whatever that may be. I found some of Selle Royal saddles the same way and
from a shop with that same looking template. Seemingly every retailer was
sold out and I looked long and deep, but then I got "creative" in my
searches and like PFM, this shop appeared and they were in stock. It's the
shops that have the actual parts though, they don't send out to a
centralized warehouse like some may do. It's a way for once "local only"
shops to serve customers on a broader scale. The shop I bought the saddles
from did a superb packing job, and yes I'm aware of what Riv does. I
emailed the shop and thanked them, that it reminded me of what people who
care about such things can do and it's appreciated. They responded that
they were just getting into shipping items, so good for them.

[RBW] Has anyone shellacked cushioned Newbaum's?

2021-03-09 Thread Brett Callahan
If so, would you share a picture and/or your impressions? I'm curious as to
how A) it looks; and, B) how the cush underneath works with the hard tape
on top.

I've double wrapped with unpadded Newbaum's and shellacked on the top layer
with good success. I'm wondering if this would work out similarly.

Thanks!

Right on, well let me know what you might let the
frame/fork/headset/bb/wheels go for. I understand that’s more inconvenient
than selling the whole bike, but that’s where my interest is. If you’re not
into it, no worries at all. It’s a beautiful build, just not all of what
I’m looking for

Bill is right. The bike looks like it was recently built up before I
bought it so it is great shape but I could be convinced to part it out. It
really just depends on price. I don't want to spend a lot of time selling
individual parts. The build is very Rivendell, and in great shape.

I might sell the front rack. I'll email you if I do. I just need to see the

May I suggest that if somebody wants the frameset and (potentially) the
wheelset, that you state the price you are offering to pay. I'll guarantee
that if you offer $2100 for the frameset and wheelset that Jonathan will
accept your offer :) Similarly if you offer $500 for the frameset and
$100 for the wheelset, I'm pretty sure that Jonathan wouldn't take that
offer.

Alternatively, buy the complete and part it out yourself! If you've got
some spare time to do some deals you can grind down the price of that
frameset to a really low number. I've bought some completes in my day
where I end up with the frameset I want for free because of the prices I
got for the parts. It takes time and determination to get that done.

I could use the 32F front rack...

I know you said you’re not interested in parting it out, but I would be
interested in a partial build. I.e frame/fork/headset and potentially
wheelset. All groovy if you’re not wanting to do that, but just know I’m
interested if you consider that route.

2021-03-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
How many do you need? 4? 6? 10? 100? Maybe those of us who have bought a
few sets over the years can collect a few each and get you what it is you
require.

Wheels Manufacturing lists them as a product they sell, but you have be a
dealer (and they are also out of stock).

Yes, although I have a decent workstand, for cleaning chains etc I more
