[RBW] Re: Need Platypus tire advice

2021-05-15 Thread JAS

Kate,
Good for you for getting a decision made on tires. I loved your comment
about getting lost in the internet...I, too, have been down the rabbit hole
of the internet studying various components and accessories. It's amazing
how the time flies by and even with advice from the others on this forum, I
still am trying to decide about tires. It goes like this.38 or 42?
Better flat protection or lighter tire? What casing? What brand? What's
available at this time of limited supply? Can I get what I want or do I
need to settle for something less? Yikes.

For what its worth, I have Boscos on my Clem and love them so my Platypus
will have Boscos also. That was easy. The tough decision is the length
of the stem.

Good luck with your handlebar search.

Joyce

for their heavier Everwear tires. The wire rimmed ones are obviously
heavier still. Another comparison would be to the Riv Ruffy Tuffy (700x28)
or Jack Brown (700x33). SOMA's lightweight tires are the Supple Vitesse
models, which are roughly in the same market as the Panaracer GravelKing
slicks and the Rene Herse standard casing models:

 SOMA Shikoro (folding): 28c (320g), 33c (350g), 38c (
 430g)

 SOMA Supple Vitesse SL (light): 28c (220g), 33c (250g), 38c (270g),

 SOMA Supple Vitesse EX (heavy): 28c (270g), 33c (290g), 38c (320g),
 42c (380g)

Rivendell Ruffy Tuffy: 28c (not currently listed
on Riv or SOMA sites, so who knows?)

 Rivendell Jack Brown:33c
 (320g light, 400g heavy)

 Panaracer GravelKing slick:28c (270g), 32c (290g), 35c
 (310g), 38c (330g)

 Rene Herse (standard):28c (248g), 32c (291g), 35c
 (355g), 38c (385g), 44c (375g)

 Rene Herse (extralight): 28c (225g), 32c (254g), 35c
 (303g), 38c (350g), 44c (330g)

By tradition, we can assume that many of these weights are wishful
thinking - maybe many of the measurements, too. Some of them are clearly
wrong; how can the 700x44 Rene Herse Snoqualmie Pass tires possibly weigh
less than the 700x38 Barlow Pass ones, unless the casings on the 700x44s
are sidewall-bursting thin? And weightwise, the SOMA Supple Vitesse SLs
 are
just *crazy* light, if those numbers are

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot questions

2021-05-15 Thread JRStern11 via RBW Owners Bunch
I have the original tektro side pull that Riv sold at the time for the Bleriot,
I assume the Silver are the same but private labeled. My right knee had a
replacement almost 3 years ago, I was not one of the lucky ones who bounced
back really easily. I ride but pay the piper afterwards but more my back than
knee. I get some RFA treatments and it seems to help my back. My replaced knee
just had a treatment but it is too soon to tell. I fear one day lifting it over
the TT may become an issue but it is not a problem at this point.

Thanks for the info. I have np even disappointed in Soma’s Customer Service,
maybe those Tekro brakes Riv is selling are different than the ones I have, or
maybe the bike or maybe the Bleriot just does not have much extra clearance. I
had Berthoud fenders on it but they always seemed a pain.

The Tektro R559’s are the same as the Riv Silver side pulls. The latter are
no longer made and Tektro has taken the design mainstream.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot questions

2021-05-15 Thread exliontamer
My wife's Bleriot has those Dia Compe center pulls(which work incredibly
well) and I've fit 42s fendered under there but every twig she ran over got
caught up in the fenders. It looks like Soma still sells the Riv side
pulls
https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/product/rivendell-silver-73mm-caliper-f-r-set-2863?category=169

but I think these are the same thing
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/braking/products/brakes-sidepull-tektro-r559-allen
I'm not trying to fuel anything here but I have shoulder issues and riding
upright really helped me out. I'd never presume to know what your knee
issues are like but I think the Yves, Betty, Cheviot, or Platypus would be
a nice choice for something like that.

Right now I have 2 Rivs with toptubes and am fine with them. A step

[RBW] My Betty Foy after 10 years

2021-05-15 Thread Pam Bikes
I wanted to share pictures of a Riv after 10 years with lots of beausage.
I'm terrible at Wordpress and not sure how to format it so it's cobbled
together but I did put all the pictures there and some fun facts. I love
my bike. It's the one thing I use everyday and enjoy riding it still.

[RBW] Cycling Savvy Greensboro

2021-05-15 Thread Pam Bikes
I'll be in Greensboro, NC teaching Cycling Savvy with my Betty Foy June
5th. If anyone is nearby, y'all should come join me. I've never thought
to post here but I'd love to have some Rivs in my course.

I usually teach in m home city of Charlotte, NC but occasionally travel to
teach with other instructors. I may be teaching in Portland, ME in July.
Here's a link to the course with a full description of what's it's about.
https://cyclingsavvy.org/event/cyclingsavvy-full-course-greensboro-nc/2021-06-02/

As much as you love your Riv, you'll equally love Cycling Savvy. Given the
combination of my Betty and Cycling Savvy I've ridden over 50,000 glorious
miles.

 Hi all,

Does anyone have a set of VERY used sonqualmie passes that they'd be
willing to sell for cheap? Even if they only have <50miles left, that's
fine, I just want to check clearances under the VO 52mm fenders, their
handling of mud and dirt, and compare them to the cazaderos I'm currently
 using.

 Thanks

A nice-riding, fairly durable 700x30-something tire (if you can find them)
is the SOMA New Express, which has the Panaracer Pasela tread with a more
flexible casing. This was originally a 700c tire, which SOMA discontinued
when they introduced the Supple Vitesse on the lighter end and the Shikoro
on the heavier end. I rode a pair of folding New Expresses in 700x35 for a
year or so on my around-town bike, and really liked them; I'd buy them
again if they were still available.

I bought a Shimano M611 band clamp version for my Susie with 22/34/44

diameters to make sure it includes the 28.6 shim or else get one.

Found an old chart and 650x45mm is the maximum stated width. The bikes seem
to be designed around those wide mouth Riv sidepull brakes and the
clearance on those is pretty bonkers. I'm riding 38s(I have a 60cm frame)
and have a massive amount of room. I know the Platypus has even more room
and is a very similar design if 45mm isn't enough tire for you. Also, the
top tube is long so if you're not cool with upright bars it may not be a
good choice.
As far as recommending one, I couldn't say enough nice things about it.
It's my favorite bike I've owned and the step through makes everything
easier. It handles absurdly well at every speed. It's just a fun,
comfortable bike that I want to ride. It's definitely everything I like
about Rivendell(inclusive, non-aggressive, versatile, good looking, fun)
wrapped up in a neat package.
