[RBW] Re: anyone push their altus (m310) to a 36t rear cog?

2021-06-22 Thread Joe Bernard
Lefebeaver, I'll add to the chain questions with a shifter one: Are you
using friction or index? Your problem on the second-biggest rear cog sounds
like the pulley wheels are landing slightly off-center and towards the
biggest cog, which would create that crunchy sound. Like you're going to
get that crunch when shifting to the big cog, and the chain is already
halfway there and crunching before you start the shift.

I've had this exact issue with an Altus and indexing, it's not a terribly
precise derailleur for clicky-shifting. This theory is moot if you use
friction and can't trim that sound out.

Sold for $1267 + 150 shipping. That's a CRAZY low price. Yikes!

[RBW] Re: WTB: Giro Rumble, discrete colorway, size 10 1/2 American-equivalent

2021-06-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks again, all. I've found what ought to work well. The nearest LBS sold
me a size 44.5 pair of Specialized "2FO Roost Clip" shoes that are
discreetly designed and colored, flat-bottomed with SPD cleat well, have
wide toe box, and are lace-up to comfortably accommodate both thicker
winter socks and thin summer socks or bare feet, and are only $130.00. They
get decent reviews, the one real negative remark I saw in a quick review
search being that they are too flexible for best power transfer. For my
use, which will certainly be light use, flexible is good, and they're no
more so than the Five Tens I also own. The only thing I don't like about
the shoes is the silly name.

Someone suggested Five-Ten flat bottom shoes. I did buy a pair of these for
the clips and straps on the Monocog, but after considering clips and straps
for other bikes, as well as the MKS QR pedals, I decided the easiest and
cheapest thing to do, with the least compromise of to comfort and
simplicity all around, was to buy a pair of shoes like this that I can use
with all my bikes (even the clips and straps on the Monocog, as I
discovered).

2021-06-22 Thread Joe Bernard
Bid on it, Johnny! I love the color, I have a soft spot for early
solid-color Rivs with the barely visible speared Rivendell decal..very
monochrome and anti-flash. Also love the period "from the catalogue" parts:
Phil 6-speed rear hub and Suntour front, stem shifters. It doesn't get any
more early Riv than this!

[RBW] Re: All Rounder, early on on eBay

2021-06-22 Thread Johnny Alien
It says 21" for the frame but that doesn't look like a 53cm frame. I
couldn't get info on standover too. Could be quite a deal though.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS Grilver 52 Clem H

2021-06-22 Thread Alex K
FIRST OFF: The Clem H that I put up on CL and here has been SOLD.

I have to agree with you C Cote. The Clem H that I am keeping for myself
(set up as a 1X11) is a real feat of bicycle design. Riding it around in
the Marin Headlands has been nothing short of miraculous. I was lucky
enough to find a very affordable and almost brand new 56 Atlantis 650b for
sale on this group and I truly love riding it on road rides with a little
gravel mixed in. But Clem H is the one! Especially in that classic
Grilver. And I love my Clem L (Pass and Stow 5-rail and Wald 157 massive
basket), and I know that this is a Rivendell group, but since you brought
up step-throughs, that Velo Orange Polyvalent Low has been on my radar
recently. If I was looking for a Clem L alternative at the same price
point ($800ish) I'd be taking a serious look at that.
Happy riding all.
Alex

[RBW] All Rounder, early on on eBay

2021-06-22 Thread John in PDX
Perhaps outed already, but there is a poorly photographed, but very nice
early Riv All Rounder on ebay with about 6 hours to go at $850. I've got
one, it's awesome, clearance for 2.0 x 26" tires at least, a great gravel,
bike packing bike with nimble handling. This one comes with racks, bags

[RBW] Re: anyone push their altus (m310) to a 36t rear cog?

2021-06-22 Thread lconley
Sound like the chain is too long, and/or the B screw (body angle screw)
needs to be turned in. Turning the B screw in (clockwise) increases the
distance between the derailleur and the cogs.

What Doug said, it should be fine, Shimano rear derailers are usually
good for pushing a couple teeth bigger than listed. I believe - this is
math stuff I don't fully understand - some of the concern comes from if
 you're running a wide-range triple crank *and *a big cassette..at some
point in there things get screwy. But most of us don't run triples that
 way
and you may not even have a big ring, just guard-middle-small. I say give
 it a whirl!

[RBW] Re: anyone push their altus (m310) to a 36t rear cog?

2021-06-22 Thread Lefebeaver
My Atlantis is set up with an Altus, 24-34-44 up front, and 11-34 8-spd in
back. I set up the chain length according to guidelines I got from Riv, but
my Altus grinds on the second biggest gear in back when shifting to the
innermost one - it scrapes on the gear on its way up and makes a horrendous
noise, and although it'll run in that second gear, it's clunky so I rarely
use it, but the biggest gear works fine once you get up there. I'm
wondering if anyone else has had this issue - should I add some more links
to the chain? I ultimately wish to go bigger in back - was on a loaded dirt
road tour in Brazil where there were some hills I didn't have a low enough
gear to climb and I had to walk it up, while my companions on mountain
bikes just went grinding up in their 1X setups. Thinking I need to get a
goat link for that next step to a larger cassette in back; what is the
guidance for choosing chain length with a link?

Re: [RBW] Re: FS Grilver 52 Clem H

2021-06-22 Thread Christopher Cote
The Atlantis is a close second to the Clem, but I like the Clem's clean
lines. I'm not much of a road cyclist anymore, and I haven't really warmed
up to the step-through designs, so that leaves the Clem H as the top
contender. Now if only it came with disc brakes... (ducking for cover!)
