Re: [RBW] Re: For sale 53cm Rivendell Frank Jones Sr

2021-07-31 Thread amillhench
Hey Bones,

They made them up to a 59 which had a 58cm top tube, so not a big frame by most
standards. These were made at the request of Blue Lug for their anniversary
with the intent of selling them to the Japanese market.

Only a handful were sold here.

The only two Rivs I’ve owned were this and a Quickbeam. They’re such cool
bikes.

I put it up on eBay, but I’d much rather sell to someone in this group. I’ve
got a hard 3 bike rule, and this one’s replacement is incoming.

Thanks!

Aaron

I was told that the mousetrap on the pletscher / clem rack was designed to
carry a bottle of wine. I never tried it when mine was mounted but it kind
of makes since because it doesn't seem to hold anything else in an obvious

[RBW] Re: FS: Bikes on eBay, CraigsLIst, and Other Sites

2021-07-31 Thread Scott Calhoun
Well, I got the Rivendell Custom, rode it for a few days, and ended up
returning it to the Pros Closet. There was nothing at all wrong with it--it
is Mark Nobilette built in 2011--but it was more or a touring set up and
not the Roadeo type ride (lighter tubing) I was after. The bike is in
excellent condition and looked very lightly used. Although the Pros Closet
called it a "Roadeo"--Nobilette confirmed that it was not and my
impressions riding it (super smooth, super stable), are that it was built
to load lightly.

So, heads up if any of you are looking for a big custom Riv., it should be
back up and listed at TPC again soo. This one is very nice. The JB paint
looks better in person than on the web.

I had one of these that was also slightly too small (51cm) but it was a
great bike I probably would have kept if my creaky old back hadn't informed

light Riv road bike with gorgeous lugs and fillet-brazed BB, this is the
lightest you'll find. It's my size and preferred color, I'd grab it in a

My wife has 47cm Atlantis & with 1.5" tires it has around 1/2" clearance
between the top of the tire & the bottom of the fork. It's an early
production one & has the 44cm chainstays. She doesn't have fenders but it
looks like they would fit. She's just under 5'2" tall, rides with drop
bars, a 6 or 7 cm stem, & a bar riser adapter. Absolutely loves the bike.

Hey Doug in Athens,

I’ve carried a Pedros Trixie tool since I built up my first fixed gear
(RB2). It has a 15mm wrench, cog spanner and 5mm Allen on it and fits to
cage bosses with wing nuts. Great tool if you have axle nuts.

It is too bad about the mix up. Ultimately, I felt it would be a waste of
time/money/energy to have the seller pay to ship it back to himself only to
resell it. I hope it goes to a good home here.

Best,

[RBW] For sale 53cm Rivendell Frank Jones Sr

2021-07-31 Thread A. Douglas M.
Hello all!

I’ve got my FJS up for sale. You may have seen that I bought it under the
pretense that it was a 55cm. Alas, it’s a 53cm. Full geometry is on the
blug/blahg/blog, but Riv advises this is for PBHs of 79.5 to 83.

Currently set up with a Sugino crank Wolftooth/Willow 40/32 (Phil BB) and a
White Industries 16t freewheel and Surly 18t fixed cog on Velocity A23 rims
laced to formula (origin8) hubs. Low mileage Gravelking SS+ 35s.

Velo Orange 80mm stem, Nitto B115 45cm bars, newbaums, TRP levers with new
Ultegra cables and housing. Brakes are Tektro 556.

Nitto S83 seat post with a Brooks Pro. Pedals not included.

Chain has 20 miles on it.

This was my first time riding a long chainstay Riv. I’m a fan. It feels
just as nimble on the street and trail. I believe 3 of these were made in
this color and size.

Price is $2300 shipped obo. Photos at

I do wish I had not sold my AR, had fitted it with fatter tires but I just had
no clue then. At least it went to an iBOB list member some years ago.

I think Rivendell should do a run of the original(ish) Atlantis, with some
of these aspects from those first runs:

 - The color (of course)
 - Single top tube (doubles aren't for everyone)
 - 26' wheels in small sizes, 700c in the bigger ones (I'd be cool with 26'
 in all sizes)
 - 45mm chainstays (maybe a hair smaller in the smaller sizes, a hair
 bigger in the large sizes)
 - Clearance for 2in tires with fenders

Who else would sign up for one?
What other aspects would you like?

Hankering for an Atlantis (61 or 64cm if you have one) in Nashville,

[RBW] Re: Who likes the original Atlantis?

2021-07-31 Thread iamkeith
Interesting question to think about (though I agree it's unlikely to
happen.)

I have an All Rounder from just prior to when the larger sizes got 700c
wheels and then morphed into the Atlantis as a production model. On one
hand, it remains my favorite and most-used "road" bike but, on the other
hand, I'd definitely change a few things if I could:

I'd choose slightly longer chainstays and slacker headtube to make it less
'twitchy" at slow speeds. Is that the same thing other people describe as
"nimble?"

I'd prefer a little more top tube slope and/or head tube extension, raise
the bars without an awkward amount of stem extension, even if it made it a
little less "classic" looking.

I'd like a slightly longer top tube, so that I wasn't as likely to endo
over the bars on steep, rougher rides. [Interestingly,, there were two top
tube length options at the time. Mine is the "standard," but there was a
"short" option, too. Like many of the early production models, I think the
idea was to encourage - or allow - a more upright riding posture without
messing up the handling by removing too much weight from the front wheel.
I suspect the Atlantis just went 'short-only' which, combined with larger
wheels, is what made it notorious for TCO. The newer, longer-chainstay
models fix all of this by re-distributing some weight to the front, even if
you have a long top tube and more upright (less racy) riding posture or
bars.]

In the end, I think I'd basically end up with a modern rivendell, with the
EXCEPTION of keeping the 26" wheels, which I absolutely love despite the
unusual proportions. (I can fit 2.4 just barely.) Knowing what I know
now, I wouldn't hesitate to get a custom Riv with 26' wheels, fancy
details, and a healthy dose of Grant's evolved design ideas. I might even
have it painted seafoam green (the Gus prototype that Deacon Patrick got is
a little less "loud" than the atlantis, and I love it.)

[RBW] Re: Who likes the original Atlantis?

2021-07-31 Thread Eric Marth
I think Joe & Joel have some good points, I can't see Grant doing a full
run of bikes based on one of his old designs. Especially the Atlantis,
given that it evolved from the XO-1 (I read Grant said this somewhere, old
interview or Reader) and he has been refining it for almost 30 years.

I agree with the LHT:Atlantis/Appaloosa comparisons above. If you take an
LHT and paint it Atlantis blue-green the only thing the bikes would have in
common is the paint and two wheels. I'm a current owner/rider of both
bikes.

Would absolutely be in for that -- with the original geometry, please,
including a size that will actually work (with drop-bar set-up) for someone
between 5'0" and 5'2"! (But, in this round, room in the fork for the 47cm
frame to include a fender!)
