Interesting that they used the term “bikepacking” in that 1973 article. I
assumed that was a more recent term but it looks to have been around a while.

Michael,

I suspect there's an official answer from Riv and what some folks are
willing to file on to make that kickstand work. As Grant once said to me

I have small frames and low saddles. I've used both the Swift
Industries Catalyst (reinforced X-pac) and the Jacks Supply Co Little
Slugger (Cordura or X-pac) successfully. Both have a plastic insert which
maintains the body shape when empty. Not very big but can be overstuffed
and has loops on the lid to tie on stuff. Both also work well as handlebar
bags with longer Voile straps and foam spacers.

Would you mind a saddle bag rack? The Carradice Bagman Sport works well
with larger saddle bags, like the Swift Industries Zeitgest, and it's not
as big a commitment as a dedicated rear rack. Someone mentioned the Ocean
Cycles Erlen rack - very elegant and blingy but designed for the Nitto
 S-83
so can be a roll of the dice with other seat posts.

 > the bag is the slim sucker.

Is your rear flap too long? I bought one recently and the bottom
cleared by 3/4" even when I stuffed it but the too-long flap flopped over
and rubbed the rear tire. Will said that was ... not right - actually a
couple of inches too long - and I returned the bag for a refund.

Is it true that Grant has designed a new hillibike frame built around an
IGH? And that he's designing a new "Silver" line of IHG 2 speed fixed and
3, 4, and 5 speed close, medium, and wide ratio hubs, called HilliHubs?
(Or, it might be HilliHubBubs).

No, it's not true, but it's fun to imagine it.

Good luck, I have a Nitto S83 seat post so being a dual-bolt it was able to
become quite loose without any noticeable changes to riding position.

I've never ridden one, but on paper, I think the Frank Jones Sr is one of
the best things Rivendell ever did. I would've ordered one if they'd come
in larger sizes. This build is great!

Hi, no need for a new hub. You can swap in a 6 1/4” axle (Sturmey part #

[RBW] Re: 61cm Ritchey Road Frame/Fork/ Headset

2021-12-28 Thread Brian Campbell
Corwin,

It fit 28mm tires with no problem. Those tires mounted on Pacenti Brevet
rims were closer to 30mm actual.

I was running Dura Ace Dual pivot brakes on it so they limited me on tire
size more than the bike. I think you could fit a 32mm with a different
brake set.

Below are some pictures to give you and idea.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] From One Curious Photo . . . .

2021-12-28 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I spent an afternoon with Greg Siple a number of years back while riding
across the USA, and using my memory only he told me the adapted derailleurs
and any other modifications for those early epic touring bikes were done at
a local Missoula shop called Braxton's. I think he built bicycles as well.
Ian Hibell's Africa bike is also up in the rafters of Adventure Cycling's
headquarters and worth a look.

Typo in body of print, it is indeed a Bleriot.

Gotta love all these cool looking and timeless Bicycles !
What's funny is that their experiences read as relevant today as any other
time or place.
I had looked for the article a few days at the time of posting this ago but
ran into dead ends. So this AM I felt an urge to see it as I knew it
existed online somewhere and readily accessible at that. Lo and behold
thanks to the wonders of PFM, here is The May 1973 entire periodical in

Re: [RBW] From One Curious Photo . . . .

2021-12-28 Thread John Rinker
After reading the 'Shakedown Alaska' article, I'm now more intrigued with
Dave Sorenson, the 'casual' tourer, on his alba-barred 3-speed. One can
only wonder, 'Where is Dave now?' Perhaps a member of this group?

Super fun reading!
