[RBW] Re: Clem for bikepacking?

2022-01-10 Thread iamkeith
Keep in mind that interior frame bags and everything cages and cantilevered
soft bags and a lot of that other, now-common, high-tech bike-packing
equipment is pretty new in the grand scheme of things. You can still do
alot with some good old fashioned "full" racks with panniers and
saddlebags, the way it was done for a century or more. I personally think
the long rear end of the clem lends itself to this better than any other
bike ever made.

Also, people often forget about or overlook bob trailers too but, depending
on what kind of trip you had in mind, they sometimes work well, and make it
easy to strip the bike down for day rides once you reach your destination.

[RBW] Clem for bikepacking?

2022-01-10 Thread Richard Rose
Wondering if there are any Clem L owners here using their rig for
bikepacking excursions? Seems like an ideal platform in spite of having no
space for a framebag nor fork mounted braze ons for anything or similar
cages. I am thinking of front and rear mimimalist racks from Tumbleweed as
they include the anything / manything cage mounts. Curious what others

When I bought my first Rivendell, I needed it to be a sort of

bike trailer, and then I had this Eskimo dog who wanted to ride up
 front.

I got the heavy-duty Nitto rack and the biggest Wald basket money
could buy and laid an old car mat in the bottom. That dog loved his

The bike trailer was retired after a couple of years but the basket

What does a typical Riv build with a couple of racks weigh?

I know I sound like a broken record, but so far we only have data from

[RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-10 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
69cm is just more than minimal width for my shoulders & wrists. But I'm
praying these bars aren't TOO flexy for me, and that pairing with a long,
low stem will give me some breathing room.

In those Radavist photos, I noticed Uncle Ron has his stem down below his
saddle, and is gripping those bars at the inside end of those grips.

My intuition is telling me a bullmoose version of these bars with a 170mm
quill would fit my Hunqapillar better.

see it sitting on the plastic on the car). It will require a lot of
modification (cut in two and mount the top and rear pieces separately) if I
keep the 20 x 2.4 front tire as the tire just barely clears the underside
of the fender mount tube. I also have a 20 x 2.15 Big Ben that I may use
instead, but I like the big tires. Now I just have to come up with a use
for the 27.5 front fender that came with the back fender (Simworks). VO
sells mismatched size (27.5 + 20) fender sets, but not in black, and they
are slightly narrower. The rear fender will also need to be cut in two if I
use my frame mount AXA lock (the Clementine has the correct mounts brazed
on the underside of the seat stays).
The doodad is a steerstopper from steerstopper.com. Works much better that
the spring style VO wheel stabilizer (and doesn't cover the Clementine
decals). It includes a brake application device for those that do not have
a dedicated parking brake.

Just got the chain and blue cable housings in today (blue matches the
Clementine decals). I also have some wide blue Sackville mudflaps.
Also got a new Display for the BBS02 mid drive (Chihuahuas chewed up some
of the cables) and twist grip throttle. I think that I have all the parts
now to complete.

Please let me know if you have or find one for sale!

Good luck - spend the $ on the Rene Hearse whatever route you chose for a
build. They really are a lovely smooth tire & run beautifully comfortable
at around 45psi even on the horrendous potholed streets in my neighborhood.

Thanks to all,

It may be a tough sell as opposed to continued tinkering with the Treks
setup, but maybe, just maybe I can convince her to try the Riv.

Roberta, I too, believe that the Platy will be a little heavier but with a
lighter build, it would fit her needs nicely. She is strictly a bike
path/rail-trail rider and It would be "rolling weight", and a comfy ride.
If we are ever out your way, I would love for her to take you up on a test
ride. Future Riv Sister??

Joe...Originally my Sam was racked and bagged up for touring that it wasn't
really meant for. The Atlantis (62 MUSA) has since taken that roll, and
the Sam is on a diet, loosing the heavy back rack, basket, and soon the
wheelset and tires. Then, I believe, it will be similar weight-wise to a
Platypus build that she would ride.

Phillip...much appreciated points on weight saving choices as opposed to a
standard Riv build. If this quest goes forward, I'll definitely refer to
these. She rides with a Ortlieb handlebar bag and a small under seat bag
for repair needs...that's it. ( I have to carry anything else, like
jackets and spare water bottles in a pannier)

Dave, It is really going to be a case of getting our hands on the bikes and
trying stuff out! Im pretty keen to try this Wright stem/Jones bar combo
but if it doesn't work I'll happily use a Billie or maybe even score a Rons
Back Bar in the next batch (in 18 months, lol).

Eric, That JB bar has also been on my radar, it has a unique aesthetic.
Unfortunately it is cromo and I'm not sure I'd enjoy the very short main
grip area in actual use. It would fun to try nonetheless.

[RBW] Re: An Appaloosa build video

2022-01-10 Thread brendonoid
Thanks Jaden!
The bad footage thankfully was cut out. :)
Over 15 years of seriously wrenching on bikes, constantly changing parts
and trying new things and nice stuff does tend to pile up. The Appaloosa
still isn't technically the finished build I had planned as I am *still*
waiting on the last parts to build its intended wheelset. Building bikes in
the last few years has gotten harder, slower and a lot more expensive.
Forces creativity though and that has been fun.
