We would use baseball cards, but would only put them on our bikes for
special events like riding behind a parade. I grew up outside of New
Haven,Ct and most of my friends and I were Yankee fans, I doubt anyone ever
put a Mantle card on their bike. Steve

Re: [RBW] Re: Buzzy hubs, hipster or window rattling?

2022-02-22 Thread Peter Adler

Baseball cards more common than playing cards? I suppose that depends on
when/where/how you grew up.

I remember the great economic crisis of my early childhood, when in 1967
the price of Bazooka Joe bubblegum at the liquor store in my neighborhood*
doubled from one cent to two, and the buying power of my 5-cent weekly
allowance (which I had hitherto considered princely) was cut in half.
Baseball cards were an unaffordable luxury at 5 cents a pack, and the
bubblegum in those packs was much staler than Bazooka Joe. The A's hadn't
moved to Oakland yet, and my New Yorker father boycotted the Giants as
turncoats, so I had no baseball interest until I was older.

At the same time, my father was a dealer in an Emeryville poker hall, from
the time before Emeryville was known for malls, condos, corporate offices
and Pixar. As one might imagine, there were always playing cards around my
house; the older decks would normally get tossed unless the employees took
them away. So it was playing cards in the spokes of my Raleigh Chopper,
unless it was old IBM punchcards my mom brought home from her computer
operations job at Ma Bell's West Coast routing center in San Francisco.

unaccompanied and buy stuff without comment from anybody. I even bought
smokes for my dad at that liquor store

Aeroperf, yes, I also ruined some baseball cards by clipping them to
chainstays 40-something years ago. Who knows, maybe they would be worth
tens of thousands of dollars now.

I was on a short bike trip in Mississippi a couple of springs ago and
talked to some kids--one of them, maybe 7, had jammed a disposable water
bottle into the fork of his bike, between the crown and the tire. That was
a new one to me. He demonstrated and when the tire turned, the crinkling
hollow plastic did make a rumbling sound not totally unlike a motorcycle
engine. It was pretty cool.

I like the White's sound - they're not quiet, but I find their buzz has an
elegance to it compared to some of the really loud MTB hubs out there (Hope
I think it one example, I can't recall the others). I appreciate that a
silent hub is nicer for quiet time in nature. What I like about the light
buzz is that I can passively let people know I'm coming up behind them
without a jarring ding of the bell (I'll pedal backwards as I approach to
amplify the effect)

[RBW] Re: Cool Tools for Home Wrenchers

2022-02-22 Thread aeroperf
Um, machine screws tend to be fastened with a screwdriver, while bolts tend
to have a nut and be fastened with a wrench.
This leaves open what to call a fastener that uses an allen wrench - most
common is capscrew, but bolt is also used.

Real quick JIS explanation from a motorcycle guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpqUhIZ-EJo

The VESSEL JIS +2 screwdriver is $10 from Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TG8OTY/

When I discovered JIS and bought a JIS +2 screwdriver, adjusting
derailleurs and B-screws became a WHOLE lot easier.
And, yes, there’s a dot on their heads - you just have to look close for it.

[RBW] Silver2 shifters -- over the bar, or under?

2022-02-22 Thread Pete B
Hi all, I'd be curious to see how others have mounted their Silver2
shifters on Silver mounts.

I have them on a old Trek Singletrack. I mounted them on the top. I've
found that the mounts put the shifters quite low -- just above the
bar/grip. A bit lower than I'd like, compared to others I've used.

I think they might be more comfortable mounted under the bar, and I've read
that's how they do it in Walnut Creek. I haven't tried this yet. But
eyeballing it, I think my brake lever mounts might interfere with the
shifter's movement. I've seen the video on the Riv site, but it doesn't
show brake levers or grips installed.

Anyone else been down this road?

[RBW] Re: Cool Tools for Home Wrenchers

2022-02-22 Thread lconley
The JIS is basically a Phillips with a shorter point. The are a lot of
other detail differences, but the one that matters the most is the length
of the tip. If you have a JIS screw, you cannot get a Phillips in deep
enough to engage properly, and the Phillips can rotate without the screw
and sometimes strip the head of the screw. The JIS screwdriver head will
fit deeper into the JIS screw and turn the screw without slipping. The JIS
screwdriver generally fits better in a Phillips screw than a Phillips
screwdriver in a JIS screw. There is an even pointier version called a Reed
or Reed and Prince screwdriver that has the same problem in a Phillips
screw that a Phillips screwdriver has in JIS screw. A Reed and Prince
screwdriver doesn't work at all in a JIS screw.

[RBW] Re: Everglades

2022-02-22 Thread Andrew Wentzell
Hi Laing,

Hey, that's my backyard. :)

I'm just a bit north of you, and I ride this trail pretty frequently. There
are a few other entrances (for bikes and hikers) other than the refuge
headquarters - north of it, there's a gate that connects you to a dirt road
in the southern reaches of Wellington. If you head south, there's the
Loxahatchee boat ramp (and more, I think the levee trails will take you all
the way down into Miami/Homestead). You can also loop all the way around
the refuge, for a total of about 75 miles.

The alligators are mostly dormant right now with the cooler weather, but I
think you'll start seeing them more soon. There are deer out here, too,
usually in the morning foraging in pairs. I realize deer aren't noteworthy
in the rest of the country, but I had never seen a single one down here at
all until I started riding on these type of trails, and now I see them
about once a month on my rides. Sometimes when they see me, they run off in
the direction the trail, and I try to keep up.

Our scenery definitely doesn't have the visual impact of, say, the Rockies,
but one thing to appreciate about the Everglades is that it's a totally
unique ecosystem, and so much of it has been destroyed. Riding here, just a
few minutes from modern developed suburbia, you can still get a little
glimpse into what Florida used to be. Plus, like you mentioned, it's much
lower-stress than the road riding we have.

There are other trails like this you can visit in the area. I've found the
heat maps from Ride with GPS and Strava (https://ridewithgps.com/heatmap
and https://ridewithgps.com/heatmap, respectively) really helpful to see
what's accessible to bikes, and what connects to what, based on where other
people are riding.

[RBW] Re: Cool Tools for Home Wrenchers

2022-02-22 Thread JohnS
Thank you John for sharing. I recently changed the bearings in one of my WI
hubs using a home made tool which worked, but was not optimal. I can see
the value in this one and will order it.

I don't know if others have tried the Hozan JIS 2 screwdriver which Riv
sells, but I have and it's rather amazing at how well it works compared to
a std Phillips head screwdriver. After all those years of the wrong tool
slipping and not really working to finally using a tool designed for the
job is certainly satisfying. Well worth the $20.
