[RBW] Re: Gus Boots Willsen: First Impressions

2022-05-26 Thread Erik
Hey Chris,

Those are just the regular, alloy Persuaders. I think it might be the
photos. They definitely don't have any forward sweep. I do keep them
closer to level so they may look like they have more rise, but otherwise
just the regular bars.

On the seatpost: I don't have good digital calipers to measure,
unfortunately. And I'm not sure if it was the post or the tube. With a
working bolt in the binder, it just rotated, the only reason it was
lowering into the tube was that I had cranked down with too much torque on
the bolt when I was trying to get it stop rotating. I was on the side of
the trail and got a bit over-enthusiastic! The post is used...I had it on
my Susie and on my Atlantis before that. I've had this issue a couple of
times over the years and always chalked it up to being a bigger rider. But
the knurling of the post fixed it. I did try a 27.2 seat post just to see
if the seat tube was the wrong diameter but it wasn't even close to
fitting. So if the seat tube is too large, it's only by a tiny, tiny
amount.

Re: [RBW] Hillibikes are so close!

2022-05-26 Thread Mackenzy Albright
Since parts are hard to come by I had a bike shop friend help me scramble
together a build. I had spline disc XTR rear hub in my possession, the shop
had a lightly used SON disc hub, which was reasonably priced, and the only
rims I could access to fit decent sized tires were Alex Adventurers 2. So
that is how they went together! My friend had to cut all the spokes, I
think just using what is laying around the shop. But this is the most bang
for the buck option we could come up with - and think it will be entirely
adequate and utilitarian! I am trying not to build this bike up flashy at
all. I cannot wait to see builds being posted. :)

Re: [RBW] My '99 Franklin Custom

2022-05-26 Thread Garth
So the Lone Peak Micro bag arrived in Red today. It looks okay, clean sides
and all, plus it has the bungee top which greatly influenced my decision to
buy it. I have a large olive Sackville trunk bag on my Bomba, and would
have bought the smaller one but all they had in stock was olive. Hmmm.
not another olive, tan yes ! Olive , no. For my upcoming custom I'll get a
tan one if/when they are in stock, but these LP bags are adequate for what
they are.

These are nice in that they are made for mini racks, including the extra
loop to go over the mini rack hoop. Plus it matches the forward angle, and
the velcro straps are in the right places. So for $50 bucks I got a 50 buck
bag, very good ! While some readers may scoff at the fabric or the style
and such, not everyone does and I bet some people have looked for an
alternative to the Sackville rack top bags. Maybe you don't need or want
bling for a certain bike. I couldn't find any other mfr who made a bag just
for the mini rack, I only found this by sifting through all the nice but
non-relevant options.

The rack has a slight down tilt to it. No hacksaw @hand and for now it's
close enough. I only see it when I look at it anyways !

The little bag in the water bottle is a Timbuk2 seat bag I've had a long
time. I used it to store some tools and such. I used to have on the rear
saddle of the Bomba but thought I'd try it elsewhere, it fits into a bottle
cage holder just fine. It's .75L.

I saw Wolf Tooth has what's called a B-Rad , for "Bottle Relocation and
Accessory Device". I may play with it some and see if I could eliminate a
rack and top bag altogether for my upcoming custom Franklin part duo.
Likely not, but what the hey it's all play anyways so fun it be !
Play with the clay !

An interesting place to put stuff would be in the upper triangle behind the
seat tube. I wonder what I could fit in there ? I can relocate the pump
just fine. It would have to be something non-velcro though, it just looks
awful wrapped around frame tubes. It makes it look like a bandaged bike, no
way ! If I had three bottle braze-ons there it "might" fit a King
Manythings cage, which could hold a bag. I don't think there's enough
vertical space however. The lower downtube has width considerations to be
clear of the rings. I bought a cheap "cargo cage" from Amazon but am
returning it as it's very cheaply made and the "stainless" steel is of the
lowest grade I've ever seen. Hah another "I got schnookered by the
Jungle" purchase !

I bought a so-called Rain Trekker jacket from MontBell . It's made from
some supposedly super breathable and highly water resistant Gore Infinium
Windstopper stuff. It's seam taped, been tested to be waterproof for
extended periods. I thought it had 16.5" pit-zips like their other similar
model, but this year they changed the fabric to Gore and eliminated them on
this model. I'll just have to test it to see. If I can I'd rather not have
the complexity of the extra zippers anyways and while they may help some,
they don't compensate for fabric that doesn't breathe worth crap in the
first place. This jacket supposedly does breathe well without them. Every
jacket I've had with pitzips was a roaster and the zips didn't help. I'm a
sucker for certain shades of yellow anyways, so I love the color of the
MontBell.. It also has a greatly adjustable hood that won't flop around in
the wind. It's not a "Cycling jacket" either, it's just called a Rain
Trekker for anyone active outdoors, and it comes in at a cool 7 ounces,
very squashable ! My main 3-layer "waterproof mostly" Cloudveil jacket
I've had for some 15 years and the hood has always driven me nuts as it's
cut too far forward of the forehead and can't be adjusted back. If I can
wear the MontBell instead of it I'd be happy ! It also has a nice athletic
cut, trim around the waist and ergonomically roomy around the upper body,
with long sleeves. No body ride up or dragging anywhere, it's brilliant !

I should have carried it today as I was sprinting between rain clouds, at
least it was warm enough not to freeze. My go-to not-a-rain-jacket has been
a system of a Outdoor Research hooded windbreaker and a Mountain HardWear
windbreaker vest. At least when I got soaked the wind wouldn't freeze me !
That got old though . so a MontBelli-ing we-a-go ! Ho-ho-ho ... Merry
Christmas Everybody ! Every Day and don't you forget it !

"message too long" popup . sheesh . is there a shortage of
"cyberspace ? Isn't THAT laughable ! I'll post the pics separate.

NICE! A few weeks ago I had a gang of 11 take the Reformatory Trail from

[RBW] WTB: Silver Crank Arms - 178mm

2022-05-26 Thread David B
Been a while since I've participated, so apologies for posting a
transaction-related post as my re-entry point, but...

During some swapping of parts I noticed some cracks in my favorite vintage
Shimano Deore cranks that are on my Redwood. Upon inspection of my other
set of the same model that I was going to swap onto my Clem, I noticed
cracks forming in the same spot of the driveside crank arm. So... time to
finally get some modern cranks! Good thing I caught this before they broke
through.

I'm looking for Riv's Silver Crank Arms in 178mm - ideally just the crank
arms as I have chainrings already to use. I am aware that Riv has the 178mm
length in stock as a complete triple setup, but I really don't need the
triple chainrings and hardware.

So, send a PM if you can if you've got some for sale. Alternatively, if
you're looking for the triple chainrings and bolts/spacers that come on
this setup (https://www.rivbike.com/products/silver-crank-triple-44x34x24),
I could order this from Riv and pass the chainrings on at a reasonable
price.

Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: Anyone using an ABUS frame lock on a CLEM JR?

Thanks both Emily and Jingy! Those both look like great options. I do like
the idea of extra security since I built a dynamo front hub and the bike I
so long I feel like it could make locking up much more flexible in the city
and exceedingly ample for camping pitstops and ferry parking.

Nothing particularly difficult to to for the mechanically inclined, just a
lot of measure/check, cut/grind/file and repeat.
The ABUS on a 64 will probably be something similar - fits with smaller
tires, requires adjustments with larger tires.

I purchased a used Clem frame this spring. But my wheel build is finally
being finalized at the shop. So I am just going to join in on the

[RBW] Memorial Day Bike Ride in Boston

2022-05-26 Thread maxcr
Hi Everyone,

I've done a few short rides with fellow member Jason who's visiting Boston
and we were talking about potentially riding on Monday.

Anyone else around Boston interested in joining?

Here is a good video with some ideas of potential
routes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Som1gex7c4k

I was thinking an easy ride starting maybe around 10am and potentially
heading from Somerville to the Western Greenway in Belmont and back.
Perhaps grab some food and call it a day. Any other suggestions welcome.

Cheers!
Max

[RBW] Re: Gus Boots Willsen: First Impressions

2022-05-26 Thread CJ
Erik,

Awesome build, and beautiful bike! Your Tumbleweed Persuader bar looks
different than the one I have, do you have it rolled forward or something?
It seems like it has some forward sweep. Did you or Riv measure your
seatpost to see if it's undersized? Or is the seat tube opening oversized?
It's really unusual that you'd have to knurl the seatpost to get it not to
slip.

Chris

[RBW] Re: ISO: Rene Herse front brake cable hanger, for grooved steerer, ferrule

2022-05-26 Thread lconley
Just FYI - it is much, much easier to file a flat on a threaded steerer
than you might think (If you are threadless this would not apply). Much
easier than trying to file a notch or round out of the flat inside the
hanger. Rene Herse did not have the grooved style hangers, but did have the
flat style hangers, so I bought one and filed the threaded, grooved steerer
on my Riv custom. Took less than five minutes. Having the groove already in
the steerer made it very easy to center the flat and the threads meant that
you only have to file the pointed top of the threads off, the thicker
bottom of the threads remained undisturbed. I only filed the minimum so the
hanger and spacers barely fit on - a nice tight fit. I might make this
upgrade on several bikes now.
I originally installed a Paul hanger, which is a nice quality piece, but
kind of brutalist in the way that many Paul components are, and it was
asymmetric due to the clamp (clamping to threaded steerers is no problem).
The esthetics of the Rene Herse hanger are so much better, and I have Rene
Herse centerpulls anyway.
