You had the stiffness of the steerer as your "quill", plus there was less
quill effect as your stem/bars were lower. You're probably feeling the flex
of that new taller and less stiff stem.

2022-12-14 Thread Piaw Na
Threadless stem systems are much stiffer than the traditional threaded
systems. It's the first thing I notice when switching bikes other than
tires. Though I will note that I seem to be more sensitive to bike handling
than others --- people claim that they can't tell the difference between
frames with 5mm differences in BB drop and I can tell even before I measure
the bikes.

When it comes to which is more coveted, it really comes down to whether the little superfluous (but beautiful) details on the Bombadil are important to you, and/or which paint job and geometry specifics suit you better. I believe that one was purchased by John Watson of the Radavist (and he's got a Hunq) so we might see some nice pics of that bike sometime soon. And speaking of, here's John's Hunqapillar, more images and write-up here. Are both of these frame names borrowing from Tolkien? I understand RBW had to stop using Tolkien names.

While I've done a lot of reading about Rivendell I was a bit unclear on

I had a green one. 700c. Clearance and wheelbase appeared to be essentially

Re: [RBW] Bikes For Sale: Craigslist, ebay, etc. Fall 2022 edition

2022-12-14 Thread J
>From the ad

New in box Rivendell Bleriot framesets in 55, 57 & 59cm sizes.
Ex QBP (Surly/Salsa/All-City) distributor with hard-to-find NOS stock to
sell. We bought these when they were available via QBP in MN and have been
sitting in dry storage for too long!
Rivendell's first Taiwan-made frames IIRC and the same quality as their
current offerings.
59cm currently being held pending payment.
Tange headset professionally fitted to the 59cm model for display. I'm
happy to leave as fitted or remove it if preferred.
These are located in Christchurch, NZ and I'm happy to ship worldwide at
buyers cost. Approx. international tracked delivery costs in NZ$
Freight to :
USA $707 NZD (approx. $467 USD),
Canada $661 NZD (approx. $590 CAD)
Japan $570 NZD (approx. ¥50,000)
Most of Eastern Asia $570 NZD
UK $661 NZD (approx. £350)
Europe $661 NZD (approx. 410 EU)
You're also welcome to get quotes and arrange you own delivery, typically
based on 0.1 m3 volume and 5kg shipping weight.
Shipping is from Christchurch 8061, New Zealand
Or maybe you know someone visiting NZ or in the US Antarctic Program (12
miles from where these are located) with some spare luggage capacity.
Inquiries are welcome and I'm happy to schedule a WhatsApp or Signal video
link to verify authenticity. Also Luke Breen, owner of Perennial Cycle in
Minneapolis will vouch for me.
I'm open to offers that approximate the price of current equivalent
Rivendell framesets, i.e. $1750 USD ($2650 NZD)

Ahh, unfortunately the 700c models had 2.1" clearance like the Bombadil,
it's the 26" and 650B models had more generous clearance (I'm just going by
an old geometry chart, not real world experience)

[RBW] Re: Bombadil and Hunqapillar origins: The definitive thread

2022-12-14 Thread Jason Fuller
Just catching this now, hey thanks for the shoutout Eric! And it means a
lot that you said that about the forest photo! That was a special day,
first ride on the rebuild after paint.

I don't have nearly the historical knowledge that many here do, and a lot
has already been said. But here are my summarized thoughts between the two
anyway, beyond the obvious difference of location of manufacture. The
Hunqapillar seems to me like a "v2" Bombadil - they increased tire
clearance over the Bombadil from 2.1 to 2.4" on most sizes, they made
little geometry tweaks but just a smidge here and there, and notably they
made the frame more cost-effective by not only changing suppliers but by
simplifying the design a bit.

To me they are still both "ATB" Rivendells, made to tackle trails loaded or
not, and also be comfortable to ride on pavement as long as you're not in
too much of a rush. When it comes to which is more coveted, it really comes
down to whether the little superfluous (but beautiful) details on the
Bombadil are important to you, and/or which paint job and geometry
specifics suit you better. I think of them like the Appaloosa and Atlantis
- basically two flavors of the same bike.

Re: [RBW] Craigslist Alert ! - 2022 Rivendell Gus Boots Wilson - $2,000

2022-12-14 Thread Mike Packard
FWIW I talked to the seller (Jesse) a couple times and almost bought the
bike. He is very nice and helpful, sent me full build list, was willing to
have the bike shipped. I only didn't buy because I decided it was too
similar to my Clem L. Great price for a basically new Gus. He's selling a
Roadini too.

[RBW] Re: Saddle height and BPH

2022-12-14 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jay

The most accurate SH would be using a gonimeter to measure your leg angle
and adjust SH to get the optimum leg angle (I forgot the value). The bike
is bike is on a trainer and the front wheel is leveled. The gonimeter
measures the leg angle at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Typically this is a bike shop and costs about $50 to $75. I had it done
and the result was within 2mm of both the LeMond 88.3% of PBH (BB center to
saddle) and the 109% of PBH when adding your crank length.

Heres a link to 1 of the many websites How to Determine the Correct
Saddle Height - Mantel

He discusses the leg angle method.

Re: [RBW] Bikes For Sale: Craigslist, ebay, etc. Fall 2022 edition

2022-12-14 Thread Chris in NZ
Pitching in on the Bleriots as a Kiwi:

I can't see the FB listing, but I expect these to be the same frames I've
seen previously listed on another online trading platform here in NZ at
$1400NZD. If they're now listed at $1800, I'm inclined to believe this is
still in NZD, around $1000USD.
For shipping allow $500 these days.

I would have bought the 55cm frame last year had I not been in the final
stages of ordering a Platypus frame and parts from Riv..

I was hoping Corwin would post pictures of the headset laid out, not stacked,

It's esthetically pleasing, anyways. I could do without the lettering/language,

Are bearings cartridge or carriage type?

Thanks Tom. He has adjusted for inflation and shipping will be a killer. The
Bleriot is a great bike, I had one for years and I know people still want them,
heck, I did not stop searching till I found a Saluki ashen sold my 55cm
Bleriot. If someone could get it for $1800 or so shipped then good. I bet
shipping will be about $300 or more.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Rosco Platypus 60cm - Purple!

2022-12-14 Thread a spen
Hi Folks,

I'm reluctantly parting with my latest acquisition, a 60 cm Rosco Platy-
in purple!
I find it to be a more forgiving, compliant, and spritely ride than the Gus
& Suzie, and if it had a greater stack height it would be my perfect all
arounder, but the combination of my too tall pbh (99cm) and needing
handlebars up higher still just doesn't work here.

Having owned/own a slew of Rivs, this would be my candidate for 'the one to
rule them all'. An incredibly versatile, capable, and of course, being a
Riv, fun.

I cannot improve on the description, pics & presentation from the original
poster, so a link is provided below. The bike is entirely as listed minus
peddles.

Re: [RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-14 Thread MoVelo
I find this topic very interesting. Hope you don't mind if I indulge myself
here a bit and solicit an opinion or three.

While I love both the Legolas and Rambouillet, I purchased the Ram first as
a used frame, due to the high praise it received on this and other forums.
I've had it for over 10 years now and have not grown tired of it's utility,
comfort and looks. It's a bike I can ride all day and not feel abused in
any way and is well suited to the type of rides I most often do. It's not
the lightest steel bike I own but it is probably my favorite and the one I
most often ride. Even tho the weight of the frame is not much of a
consideration for this audience; it seems to me that it could be one metric
of an informed opinion, and while it won't divulge the tubing spec, it
might give a slight clue. Remarkably I neglected to weigh the frame when I
acquired it and simply put it together and rode it. I guess I was probably
excited to have it in hand. Anyway, it needs to undergo a cleaning and
inspection this winter and so I'll put it on the scale and have that
information for consideration.

When I saw a very lightly used Legolas come up for sale, given it's unicorn
like aura, I jumped on it. Figuring I'd give it a try and probably get my
money back if it failed me. It is a different bike than the Ram in many
respects, geometry being one. I suspect the tubing spec'd is quite
different too, but I have no knowledge of how or in what way. When it came
to me it had a non-threaded steer tube. This prevented me from being able
to easily raise the bars to a desirable height. I know there are extenders
I could have used, but being the vain cyclist I am I resisted. So for
several years I rode the bike and always felt it was 'stiff'. Comparing it
to the other steel bikes I owned, rode and enjoyed, I was perplexed at why
it felt so stiff and unyielding. I just assumed it being mainly intended as
a cross racer, it gave up the some on the comfort side of the equation.
This year I finally decided to have the steerer threaded, and found myself
amazed at what that little difference made in the bikes riding
characteristics. Legolas is a happy, repsonsive elf now, and less of the
stern unyielding elf it was before. I have to ask myself, and you if you've
managed to hang on this long, how can something as simple as this change
make such a difference?

The bars on the Legolas are a bit higher now and level with the seat as
with all the rest of my bikes. The threaded steerer obviously allows the
bars to easily be raised to a better position with (in my opinion) a much
better looking stem.

Has the flexibility of the gooseneck stem really changed the feel of the
bike? Does the bike actually ride better or is my mind convincing me that
because it looks better it rides better?

Re: [RBW] Cliffhanger alternatives?

2022-12-14 Thread Den John
Halo components in the UK do some wide rims for rim brakes in 26", 27.5"
and 29".
Their SAS is 26 or 27.5" and 30mm internal width.
Their T2 is 29" and 26mm internal width.
I think they have some other models too.

I have the SAS 27.5" on my single speed MTB. I was worried they'd feel
heavy (760g) but not so far. They did squeal a bit because the braking
surface needs to bed in, otherwise no problems.
Currently running 2.8" WTB Rangers with tubes. Not tried tubeless setup yet
with these. I like the Rangers a lot in that size, but seems like they are
getting hard to find, at least here in the EU.

Cheers,
Johnny

Paul brings up an excellent point. If you plan on running the max tire
size on your Gus, just make sure the brake you use will clear it. I had
already purchased MotoLites for mine before even considering a tire size.
Ended up going with 2.5” Ehlines, which turned out to clear the brakes by
maybe 1cm. I doubt I’d feel comfortable with any less clearance just due
 to
the chances of picking up mud and rocks and sticks on chunky treads. Of
course, this says more about the limitations of certain brakes than it
 does
tires. With the right brake choice, you should be able to run the 2.8s no
problem… just keep it in mind.

 Richard,
I run 2.8" G-ones on Cliffhangers on my Gus without any problems. I
don't think the frame would take a bigger tire, and v-brakes almost
certainly won't. I already had to Swap the Paul Motolites for Deores to
 clear the 2.8" G-ones.

So if you want Cliffhangers on your Susie, no need to worry about the
rim width being a limiting factor.

Re: [RBW] Saddle height and BPH

2022-12-14 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks (thank you, thank you) for bringing attention to the the Catalyst
pedal - I think it will be a godsend for me. I deal with an injury related
neuropathy in my left calf muscle which prevents me from doing things like
a tippy toe on that side. Had to sell my pristine manual ‘07 Honda S2000
as I could no longer use the clutch safely - a tragedy! Being able to
incorporate more of my foot on the pedal will be wonderful as I half-foot
my left pedal now and it is a struggle. I measure to a 76cm saddle height
based on PBH, but it runs closer to 70cm in actual use. Not ideal, but
better than siting on the couch.

With a new Sam ordered, I now think I will now request the smaller 170MM
crank as part of the build to help balance things out.

Sure glad I found this group!

[RBW] Re: Annual Head-Badge Poster Update

2022-12-14 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Climbing past 2,300 views now - a new record for these updates! Glad you
all like it. Beginning to think about something new. Open to ideas from the
bunch as to what kind of Riv-related poster (or calendar?) you might like
to see. I've done one of the bike models before, but it was difficult to
find good hi-res photos of all the bikes. No promise that I'll do something
in the near future, but when the mood strikes I want to have some ideas in
mind that this group would appreciate.

[RBW] Re: New Gus shipping from Canada

2022-12-14 Thread T s
Canadian here, when I have shipped frames to Canada in the past the magic
number was $800, after that state sales tax could be applied, shippers
will also often charge a handling fee of aprox $50. Just as a side note,
the frame you are purchasing will have Canadian duty included in the
price, Canada still has tariffs on bicycle frames and completes, so the
dealer would have had to pay 5percent duty on the frame after which they
would have set their price. However the price is likely based off a higher
exchange rate that was in place when they procured the frame, , so in
todays dollars you are coming out ahead.
