Epic! Anyone open to an afternoon/evening ride this coming Saturday? Meet
around 5/530 and enjoy a sunset ride into Marin or something?

Palo Alto Cyclery is the only place I've found that carries anything I'm

[RBW] Re: New build: 1985 Bridgestone MB-2

2023-01-24 Thread Stephen
Eric! Done it again, looks great!

I really dug seeing your process with patina-ing the steel and brass bits.
Reminds of a residential construction project I worked on that had a steel
retaining wall that was treated (maybe with a similar acid wash.. not sure)
to accelerate the rusting/patina. It turned a really nice purple. The
intentional metal oxidation plus the thoughtfulness/cleanness of the build
creates a really beautiful dynamic. I agree silver parts just look right on
this bike.

How are you liking it and the ride so far? How does it compare to your
hillborne and appaloosa? Planning to take it on some overnighters? Anything
you wish you had done differently?

Definitely giving me the bug to do another bike build myself... hopefully
sometime soon.

Cheers,

Stephen

They are rare and built by a true craftsman. The quality of Curt's builds
are second to none and most custom builders would attest to that and they
have a ride to match. I know because I had Curt build me a 650b bike that
would fit 42's back when the 650b's were just starting to become popular.
I've had at least 6 different Riv's. All fine bikes but not as fine as a
Goodrich. You won't be disappointed and if you are you'll certainly be
 able
to find someone to take it off your hands.

As a point of fact, the All Rounder might very well have been made by
Curt Goodrich. If not him, then Joe Starck or, maybe Richard Sachs. If
the builder is an important consideration to you (and I'd agree it might
 as
well be), then you won't go wrong with that one.

The Ram is one of the earlier ones - probably orange prior to the
re-paint (and brake mod?). It and both of the Homers (or Homer and
re-painted Saluki) are Toyo built. Also very high quality. (The lugs are

About $400. (+ what Joe said)

I ended up buying a regular/swoopy Platy but it was the Rosco (and its
price) that first got me thinking about the possibilities of a Riv

Regarding Crust: I think they just have the Platy in stock, not the Rosco

2023-01-24 Thread Brian Forsee
I checked these out today and picked up the blue Homer. My first riv! I've
got some stuff to change on it but i am super excited.

The grey 'homer' is indeed a 650b canti bike. Prob a saluki as Bill
suggested. Paint was really nice.

The Ram also had 650b wheels with long reach brakes at the bottom of the
slots. Also had nice, presumably custom, paint.

The Curt was a beautiful bike. Had 700x38 tires with fenders. Looked like
it would clear a little bigger with fenders. Maybe a 42 or 45 without.

The Riv custom had 26" wheels. Tires that were on it were 35 or 38. Again
could probably fit a 42 or 45 but not much more.

All the bikes are in the 60cm range with top tubes between 57-59. The
seller, Steve, was super nice and I'm sure would be happy to provide
whatever info someone may be looking for if you give him a ring. He didn't
seem keen on shipping the bikes because of how big of a pain it is (i feel
him on that), but I bet he'd be open to delivering to a local shop to
arrange shipping.

[RBW] Re: New build: 1985 Bridgestone MB-2

2023-01-24 Thread Greg Simmons
Eric,

Very nicely done! Provides a great example of the vast continuum of choices
available when you approach a build. I really need to make the leap to a
generator hub; the lighting looks great also! This one especially spoke to
me, as I found an MB/2 some years back that eventually also became a
project (In 1988, it was MB/2, not MB-2, strangely enough). It's been my
daily commuter for six years come February. Where did those 6 years
go? *Tempus fugit, vita brevis, ars longa,* all that. Not that it is
anything special, but if you wanted to compare to your '85, here's an album
link that I hope will work and not make a mess: 1988 Bridgestone MB/2

Thanks for sharing, much enjoyed the video (and the earlier ones)!

Buy the Goodrich if it fits and can handle the tires you want to run. They
are rare and built by a true craftsman. The quality of Curt's builds are
second to none and most custom builders would attest to that and they have
a ride to match. I know because I had Curt build me a 650b bike that would
fit 42's back when the 650b's were just starting to become popular. I've
