[RBW] Re: Snow? In California??

2023-02-25 Thread Jason Fuller
It's pretty neat to see the Joe Custom in the snow... not something I ever
expected to see. I went for a ride today that was _supposed_ to become a
snow ride based on the forecast, but it was just those tiny frozen pellets
that just pummelled my eyeballs but didn't accumulate. However, since my
afternoon ride there has been three inches (and counting) of snow
accumulation. So tomorrow I shall get out for some "Riv winter riding"
photos (unless I take the mountain bike instead... which is likely at this
rate)

2023-02-25 Thread Roberta
I had recommended to Pam via email the Saris Freedom 2 rack, the EX
version, which tilts, if she can find one. Otherwise, she could buy the
tilting add on and put it together herself, if that’s important. I can open
the trunk of my Civic without tilting the rack.

Th Rocktmounts Highnoon FC that Paul recommended looks nice, too. Pam—I
don’t think this was available when I was in the market, but it looks good.

I did not research but I’d expect that there are only 1 1/2” hitch mounts
available for a Prius.

The with the saris freedom you can U lock (not just cable lock) your bike
to the rack for quick stop. I realize nothing is theft proof but for me,
this added security is important. It may not be for others.

[RBW] Re: The Riv goes "Spinal Tap"

2023-02-25 Thread Drew Saunders
Thanks, Luke and Ryan, for the kind comments.

There was enough of a break in the rain to take it out for a ride today.
I’m visiting my mom in Florida next week, so I won’t get in another ride
for a while.

The 11 speed friction shifting with Silver bar-ends and my old Ultegra
9-speed RD worked great! I didn’t miss a single downshift, only shifted two
cogs where I wanted to shift one once, and only had a little grumbling on
one upshift, which was easily corrected. With a bit more practice, it’ll be
smoother than my 9 speed indexed shifting. It’s already *Much* quieter!

Oddly, even though I have a more standard high-normal RD (Rapid Rise is
also called “low normal,” with the difference being which end of the range
the derailleur goes to with no cable tension), I found it easier to
downshift than up. I suppose this is the result of 40 years of refinements
to the chains and cassettes for indexing making them so easy to friction
shift.

Being old, I learned on a 2x5 “10 speed” with downtube Shimano 600 friction
shifting. My 1989 college graduation present was a Bianchi Volpe with
Suntour 3x7 indexed, and Suntour didn’t index very well, so I switched it
to friction after a year or so. My next experience with friction was when
the 8 speed bar-end shifters on my Ibis Mojo MTB got sloppy after about 12
years, so the derailleur didn’t consistently get to the right spot, so I
moved the adjuster to friction and used them that way for a season, then
converted that bike to 3x9 indexed. Shimano clearly learned a lesson, as my
9 speed bar-cons are much stiffer than the 8, but have lasted 15+ years
without any change in the quality of their shifting. Still, that stiffness
can be a bother.

As expected for a flat ride, I never moved the front derailleur, and
somehow got it in just the right spot so I didn’t have to trim it to avoid
chain rub as I ran the whole cassette. I didn’t really need the 42-28, I
just wanted to test the whole range a couple of times. I’m not sure if I
just had great luck, or if I’ll be able to consistently find this sweet
spot, we’ll see after I try a hillier ride and use the small ring. I kept
reaching for the left shifter out of habit, but I’ll be happy to do most of
my rides in “one-by” mode.

The hub on the Ibis is 8/9/10 only, but I may convert it to 2x10 next rainy
season.

[RBW] Re: Bike rack suggestions

2023-02-25 Thread John Bokman
Paul, thanks for digging deeper. It does indeed look like it would work for
me. I'd probably spring for the double bike rack; at $580, it ain't cheap,
but it seems comparable, or less expensive, that many options out there. As
to the Yakima Raptor: I have had one for 25- or -so years, and it always
just works. I give it no special treatment, no pampering, and it just
works. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a clone in a hitch-mounted rack.
I've always been impressed with my various old-school Yakima racks, going
on 35 years old now. So I want to give them the business, but they don't
seem to make what I want: a simple-to-use, platform hitch rack that doesn't
impinge on my fenders. In fact, I'm surprised that there are so few options
for fendered bikes across brands. I guess not everyone lives in Portland,
Oregon, like me. Who knew?

[RBW] FS: a bunch of bags

2023-02-25 Thread Julian Westerhout
For sale are a bunch of bags — I seem to keep accumulating bags, and it is
again time for a purge.

All prices do not include shipping.

Photos can be seen at https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAtseT

Swift Motherloaf basket Bag — brand new with tags — Black — description
here https://builtbyswift.com/shop/motherloaf-basket-bag/$130

Acorn Medium Rando Bag —brown — like new, older style rack attachment — see
photos. $125

Acorn large saddlebag — brown — in very good condition $85

Guu Watanabe frame bag — tan — this is a slim bag designed to fit inside a
frame or on the seat post of a folding bike — light use, impeccable
workmanship $90

Ortlieb medium saddlebag — tiny bit of dirt, but very light use, with mount
and instructions. $40

Carradice saddlebag — green — not sure of model. Almost new $70

Carradice saddlebag — black, not sure of model (barley?) — fair amount of
use — lots of life left — the straps to attach to saddle and seat post seem
to have gone walkabout, so not included unless you get lucky and I find
them! :) $25

Re: [RBW] Re: Custom frame bag for Gus

2023-02-25 Thread dougP
Well done. When Rivendell started their long wheelbase designs, I saw that
space as perfect for a bag. Good to see it exists. Is there any coating on
the bag facing the rear tire so keep contents dry? Sort of a faux fender?

Laing, in this case with this design it most likely would interfere. I
specifically wanted this bag to carry my pump and all my tire tools so it

2023-02-25 Thread Paul Clifton
Page 4 of the PDF instructions show the preferred arm location. It's like
basically as long as you can get it up to about 7 o'clock, you should be
good:
https://rockymounts.com/content/51339_REV_5_sml.pdf

I didn't see any reviews or video instructions. must be niche product :)

I may spring for one of these next time I need another rack, which may be
never, but it'd really encourage me to put fenders back on some of my bikes.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: The Cabo Loop, BSC

2023-02-25 Thread John Rinker
Hey Craig,

I used an MSR pump for many years then switched to their gravity filter
which makes so much sense to me. On the GDMBR a few years back, my buddy
and I had a Steri-pen and the MSR gravity filter- an excellent combination.
Steri-pen for quick stops and clear water, and the MSR for end-of-day, big
water reloads. Also, the MSR is better for less-than-clear water.

Mostly now, I like the Steri-pen as it's light and convenient. I can
recharge it from my dynamo, and I'd estimate a single charge lasts up to
50L of water, probably more. I've used it in all kinds of water and, so
far, it's proven itself handily. Of course, there's always the possibility
of the tech going on the fritz, but everything can fail. Then, we get a
chance to see how resourceful we really are!

Cheers, John

ps. Thinking of riding the Sky Islands in your area in late April. Good
time of year?

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-02-25 Thread Bill Schairer
I agree with Garth and Andy. I've got an old Campy shifting a 50/45/26, a
Suntour AR or Vx (I can't remember which) shifting 42/34/19 on my Atlantis,
and whichever isn't on the Atlantis is on my Trek shifting 45/42/24. I've
also used Cyclones. It often takes a bunch of fiddling and trial and error
- I've had derailleurs work well on one bike but not another so, as Garth
said, having a choice of several on hand and doing one's own work is the
best way to go. The old derailleurs are elegant, light, plentiful, cheap,
and they just work. I picked one of the Suntours up for free from a bike
shop parts bin, all it needed was a cable clamping screw.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-02-25 Thread ascpgh
Shaped inner plates hate wide chainring choices, they're made for corporate
combinations to assure legal counsel of perfect shifting with their
derailleurs, shifters cassette combos and other spec. What I found when
building up my wide double (46/30) rando with RH cranks was that with all
the new FDs to try, my mechanic found the SunTour Superbe from my bag of
nearly NOS FD options fit and worked the best. Plus it doesn't try to hide
that it is made of metal, it is bright silver.

A couple shots in album form:

Tail of the cage not hitting the right chain stay, limiting how close to
the 46t ring it could be, chain line when on on the 30t not below the
intended interface of an origami inner plate sculpted for a very narrow
range of OEM chainring size combinations and a width of parallel cage
plates that permits operation across several cogs before trimming is
necessary. I'm quite happy with it.
