Your local shops sound like non-starters, if the one isn't confident and
the other is bad juju. Freighting the bike coast-to-coast and back to Riv
+ their labor sounds like it's not a deal-breaker. Sounds like the west
coast is the mecca for framebuilders. I have no idea about the east coast
or mid-US. I wonder if you could get a second opinion from Mark
Nobilette...although I would not be surprised if he is retired or
contemplating retirement.

I've bought 3 bikes from Riv2 customs and many parts and while the
wait time may be long, I would totally trust them to move heaven and earth
to get your bike right. If it means that much to you I would put myself in
their hands. You have that established relationship with them.

My .002CAD...good luck. I'm sure you'll resolve this one way or another

This is my Hillborne, my most-ridden bike. I'll see if the hanger can
be bent but I have a feeling it will require some work from a frame
builder. That's a Suntour Cyclone. Fortunately I have five of them
(including this one). You might recall the cage tension spring in my
previous Cyclone recently failed. This is one of the replacements I picked
up. It was in excellent shape but now it's going to the salvage bin.

While I was waiting for a ride four people stopped to ask if they could
help me. One was a cyclist who said "You need anything?" I replied "I
need derailer hanger, a rear mech and a welding torch!"

Hope your weekend rides weren't so mechanically eventful.

[RBW] Re: Tried and liked: Suntour Cyclone pretzel

2023-08-02 Thread Eric Marth
Okay, some mild updates.

I've bent and tweaked the hanger with crescent wrenches at least two dozen
times now. Worked on it during the miserable heat wave here and during
nicer weather yesterday. During the process I remove the chain and the
derailer, tweak the hanger, re-install the chain and derailer, test ride.
Repeat. Over and over! Every time I ride the bike the chain skips.

I've tried aligning by hand and eye. I've used a series of straight edges,
trying to reference off the cassette to the face of the derailer hanger
where the derailer sits. I can get the straight edges into plane with one
another but evidently that's not enough because the chain still jumps.

I feel like I can finesse this thing back into working order but I have so
far been unsuccessful. The hanger is relatively flat considering how
mangled it got. It's considerably better than it was. The bolt hole is
elongated but fortunately derailer bolts screw in nicely and the threads
feel good. Through all my uninstalling/reinstalling the bolts thread in
nicely each time.

One problem is that the guys at the LBS have put their dropout and hanger
alignment tools on the bike and they say the tools show things are aligned.
*But* they are also audibly and visibly weary of putting too much torque on
the hanger and seem to think it's going to shear off the frame if they look
at it funny. I don't think that's going to happen. I talked to Grant about
this twice now and he doesn't think that's going to happen, either. He
shared an acedote wherein he bent a derailer hanger through 180º of motion
several times before the hanger sheared off. I'm not moving mine nearly as
much, just a bit at a time. And today I heard Grant Petersen say "Steel is
magical." So I'm adding that to my lifetime book of memorable quotes by
notable people.

There's another shop in town but I get bad vibes every time I go in there
so I'm going to spare myself and stay away. I know if I go in there it'll
end up being a bad scene and I'll regret it.

I'm open to having a builder try to align the hanger, heat it up and shape
it or braze a new dropout onto the frame. But the builder I know and have
worked with before on three other bikes (this Hillborne included) has sold
his tools and retired. Two other nearby builders haven't returned my
messages.

Now I'm thinking the best next step is to drop > $100 on a derailer hanger
alignment tool and try it myself in the home shop. Looking at the Park Tool
DAG 2.2. This eliminates the hesitancy of other mechanics (I'm not afraid
to wreck the bike) and gives me a useful tool to have forever.

Full options going forward (as I see them, open to suggestions as always):

   - Buy a gauge and adjust it myself until I'm satisfied or I give up and
   advance to next option
   - Take it to a shop
  - Go-to shop seems afraid to break my hanger, I don't think that's
going to happen but they are audibly and visibly weary.
  - Other shop in town I avoid at all costs and don't want to take my
  bikes to them
   - Get a new dropout welded onto the bike
  - I wouldn't mind doing this but I can't find a builder in my area
  - Contacted three people. One retired, the other two haven't
  responded.
   - Send it to Rivendell
  - Grant thinks Mark or Antonio can fix the hanger. Cool!
  - Grant said to send the bike stripped down, no fork. How are they
going to align and test it to see if the chain jumps?
  - I don't relly want to freight the bike coast-to-coast twice.
  Not a dealbreaker, tho.
  - Grant said if Mark or Antonio can't get it he knows a builder who
can do the repair but it could be three months before I get the bike back.
  - This leads me back to...
   - Buy a gauge and adjust it myself

If you've made it this far, wow, you are invested in this repair! Thanks
for checking in. I'll post more updates as they develop.

worry the cost to freight the frame would be a little painful and the time

[RBW] WTB: Park Tool DAG

2023-08-02 Thread Eric Marth
Hi all — If you're holding a Park Derailer Hanger Alignment Gauge you'd let
go of please let me know your price shipped to me in 22401.

As some of you know, I recently mangled my derailer hanger. I'm trying to
get it sorted out. I'd like to try to further finesse the hanger in my home
shop before taking the next step of handing the bike off to someone else.

Thank you!

They're getting the band back together.
John B & Darby of our much-missed Rivelo are hosting a Pedalpalooza get

All bikes welcome, though I suspect we may see the greatest gathering of
Rivendells ever outside of Walnut Creek.
Bikes, Bags, Brews, and Bob.
Be there.

Re: [RBW] FS - Red Toyo-built Atlantis frameset, 60cm

2023-08-02 Thread Elton Lance
I can’t help but chime in here. . .

I worked at Harris Cyclery for 16 years. The first 8 of those were
side-by-side with Sheldon, who passed in February, 2008. This frame is one I
purchased new from Rivendell in the original Russian green. It was 2004, IIRC.
This bike never belonged to Sheldon. I was involved in working with Harriet
Fell, his widow, in finding homes for many bikes in his personal collection,
though this was not one of those.

One dark and rainy night in October, 2006, I was riding home from work, lit
like a Christmas tree, and was struck by a hit-and-run driver. I went over the
car and the bike suffered top tube damage such that Sheldon said, “I wouldn’t
ride it if it was mine!”. So back to Rivendell it went for a new top tube. I
don’t know for sure who did the work. When it was repaired, Mark Abele called
me to ask what color I would like to have it repainted. Red! And so it was. . .

Six months later, I was attacked by a rottweiler in nearly the same spot. The
bike was unharmed but I was not. The settlement I received from the dog’s
owner paid for a good bit of my first JP Weigle (happy ending).

Shortly thereafter, I sold the bike to Gino Ganz (sp?) in CA. Beyond that,
I’ve lost track. It’s fun to see it re-emerge from time to time.

It’s like a game of telephone, it seems. But them’s the facts.

It was listed by Rivendell as a 61cm. It’s one of the ones I wish I’d kept!

Red & cream Toyo-built Rivendell Atlantis 60cm frameset (center of BB
to top of TT). Bought the frame from Elton Pope, at Harris Cyclery,
tasked with selling some or all of Shelton Brown’s collection. Serial
 no. AT0618.
Maybe someone can possibly comment on the year built? No dents or
dings on the frame. Typical number of paint nicks and scratches for a
bike that age. Over time, I covered bare metal nicks with primer
enamel (see photos). The headset is IRD roller bearing type and the
bottom bracket is a Shimano square-taper. Both are recent additions
and in good working order. Recently downsized, so space constraints
necessitates letting it go. Passing it on for $1,050. I will have the
frameset professionally boxed at the LBS at my cost. Buyer to pay
shipping and insurance or pick up unboxed in the Richmond, VA area. PM
 me with any questions.

A new thing in Oakland..bike jacking like car- jacking only with high end

No need to break the lock.

2023-08-02 Thread Ryan
Not sure about that original Rivendell listed for $1 which is not $1 in
Brooklyn. If he means 1K I think he's dreaming in Technicolor.

I downloaded one of the photos to zoom in on and regardless of the crappy
obviously not original paint job with no decals or anything else to
identify it, the lugs and the fork don't look like OG Riv lugs or fork to
me. It's not a great photo but I'm not sure seeing it in person would
change my mind.

Maybe someone can possibly comment on the year built? No dents or

It's a bit "idealized" in that the Atlantis is being ridden with snow
on the ground, but it doesn't have fenders.
That's a setup for someone with a few bikes to choose from -- where
there's snow, there'll be salt, and water, and slush, most days in the

But it sure looks great -- Rivendell nailed the color on that bike.
It just looks right, it's easily recognized, and even though it's just

Re: [RBW] Upcoming Riv Ride: Chicago

2023-08-02 Thread Jason
Looks like great fun. I hope to attend. Thanks for organizing this, Leah
and Marc!

If we are considering other route options, as others are suggesting perhaps
the North Branch Tail could be combined with the Lake Front Trail. I
sketched a quick route from Mack's south on the LFT to the North Avenue
Beach, then back north on the LFT until cutting west to Half Acre Beer Co
., which has food, beer, and an
outdoor patio. From there, the ride could connect back to Mack's via the
North Branch Trail, but before stopping, see the nearby Baháʼí House of
Worship
.

Here's a map of that concept

Thanks Steven! I'm really happy to have the Trek. When I found the Atlantis
frameset, I expected that it would replace the Trek, but the Atlantis is
gone, and the Trek is still in the stable!

Saturday might be toasty so I vote for a morning start. I'm game for

Re: [RBW] Upcoming Riv Ride: Chicago

2023-08-02 Thread Cody Marvin
I don't disagree with anything anyone has said about Navy Pier or the LFT.
Once you hit North Ave it's pretty busy and becomes a different kind of
ride, you're either slowing or dodging. But the location of Navy Pier makes
sense given the mileage goal. And it's more or less a food court, so from
an organizer's perspective it's an easy place for a group to eat lunch.
(Since I've had kids my views on Navy Pier have softened.) Depending on
start time, pace, and number of riders, it might be worthwhile to consider
holding off on lunch until after the midpoint. I don't typically ride the
LFT on weekends, at least not north of the museums, but I'd be happy to do
it for a Riv ride. Looping around to the Channel Trail is a good idea, it's
far less crowded. Also happy to do Bike the Drive with some fellow Riv
riders - it's Sunday, September 3, though my son and I will be riding at a
9 year-old's pace.

Seconded on the North Shore Channel Trail. It should be much less crowded than the sea of humanity you’ll be riding with (and against) along the lake. You can combine that with the Lakefront Trail and get a really nice loop around the city and up into Evanston. On Aug 2, 2023, at 9:53 AM, Conway Bennett wrote:I'd stop before North Avenue Beach.  I suggest heading Northwest at Irving Park.  You can stop at Wrigley Field which is a much finer tourist trap than Navy Pier, and then work your way to the North Shore Channel Trail which goes all the way to Evanston.  There are so many more quality food and drink options on this route.Fair winds,Captain Conway Bennett239.877.4119On Wed, Aug 2, 2023, 8:21 AM Marc Irwin wrote:We don't plan to go as far as McCormick Place.  We're open to suggestions for lunch, I picked Navy Pier as a convenient turnaround point for a 35 mile ride from Mack's.MarcOn Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at 8:37:55 AM UTC-4 captaincon...@gmail.com wrote:I'm sort of in.  There are sections of the Lakefront trail that are great.  I'd recommend avoiding North Avenue to McCormick Place on a Saturday in August.  Also, Navy Pier has little redeeming cultural value and the LFT is a disaster around there despite tens of millions of dollars spent. On Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 9:56:38 PM UTC-5 Bicycle Belle Ding Ding! wrote:I’m open to options other than Navy Pier, but would request some place we can sit down and enjoy food and drinks, in keeping with the tradition of our Riv Rides. I'd stop before North Avenue Beach. I suggest heading Northwest at Irving
Park. You can stop at Wrigley Field which is a much finer tourist trap
than Navy Pier, and then work your way to the North Shore Channel Trail
which goes all the way to Evanston. There are so many more quality food

 Hi All,

The celebrated Lakefront Trail in Chicago is calling. I’ve never done
it but on August 26th, I’ll get the chance..and you’re invited!

Mack’s Bike and Goods, the Evanston Rivendell dealer, will be expecting
us. We will meet there at a time TBD on the morning of the 26th, visit the
shop and then catch the trail from there. We will have lunch at the Navy
Pier (restaurant also TBD, locals feel free to weigh in) and ride for
 maybe
 a total of 30-40 miles.

Bring your favorite Rivendell, some mad money to spend at Mack’s if you
like, your sparkly personality and join us for our first Chicago Riv Ride.

Please let us know if you plan to attend!

[RBW] Re: Upcoming Riv Ride: Chicago

2023-08-02 Thread Marc Irwin
We're open to suggestions for lunch, I picked Navy Pier as a convenient
turnaround for a 35 mile ride from Mack's.

I'll amend this with the Bike the Drive event is coming up a few weeks
later, and I would like to do it with a RBW consortium--it's the same ride
sans cars.

Re: [RBW] Upcoming Riv Ride: Chicago

2023-08-02 Thread Conway Bennett
I'm sort of in. There are sections of the Lakefront trail that are great.
I'd recommend avoiding North Avenue to McCormick Place on a Saturday in
August. Also, Navy Pier has little redeeming cultural value and the LFT is
a disaster around there despite tens of millions of dollars spent.

[RBW] Bike theft - check the lockup structure

2023-08-02 Thread Ryan
I actually noticed this in Winnipeg where I live. I rode my bike to a bank
in a fairly upscale mall and noticed that one of the lockup rings was loose
where it's bolted into the concrete. Other tricks; sawing through the metal
tubing of the structure itself and using tape of some sort to hide it, etc.

Don't be in such a hurry that you don't check whatever you're locking your
bike to.I know it's obvious but I just thought I'd pass this on

You can even buy them from me! If I can find them, they're around here
somewhere. I don't live in the area anymore so don't need them, if anybody
wants to pay some kinda cash gimme a holler.
